As Fame X winds down to its final five contestants, I can’t help but feel a little disillusioned. This season of Fame X has been nothing but drama. On one side is Judge Slaps-His-Brother-On-Stage Mehndi, who keeps yelling “sur” every time a contestant finishes. The audience knows what he is going to say before he says it. On the other hand, there is Dean Heart-On-His-Sleeve Sen, who fights every battle with Daler Mehndi instead of fighting the ones that matter.
For the most part I think that the proper people have made it to the top five. I am still upset about Ashu being voted out. I knew Aditya didn’t stand a chance because he might be able to do rock music well but that was his niche. He couldn’t do anything other than that. Neeti does not really belong in the Top 5. And Rakesh, bless him, still can’t perform.
MTV’s guest judge was pop singer Mika, who is Daler Mehndi’s younger brother. He opened the gala with a disappointing performance. He can clearly sing, but his style of singing was nothing to cry home about. I couldn’t understand half the words he was saying. Some the Fame X contestants have performed better than him. Maybe Daler Mehndi should criticize him on sur and Ganesh Hegde should show him how to perform.
But, moving right along. First up was Rehan. His opening was actually quite nice. I’m glad he got the opportunity to show off skills other than singing and performing. He plays keyboard quite nicely. He started with Adnan Sami’s Kabhi to Nazar Milao. This song is very special to me and the only reason I might have had to be disappointed is that Rehan’s voice is thinner than Adnan Sami’s. I kept listening for that unique Adnan Sami style, but it didn’t come. Still well done on Rehan’s part. He transitioned into the Arabic lyrics of Kaho Na Kaho from the movie Murder, slipped in to the Arabic song Habibi, then came back to the Hindi lyrics in Kaho na Kaho. And he ended with Jeene Ke Hain Chaar Din. Overall, a solid performance. The judges liked it, the faculty liked it, but most importantly, I liked it! :D
Next up was drama queen Anandroopa. She picked songs that suited her personality to the T. Her performance included a blend of Oldies: Mere Piya Gaye, Babuji Dheere Chalna, Aao Na, and Dum Maro Dum. I agreed with Ganesh actually that she would have probably done better on a lower scale because she did have some trouble hitting the high notes. And, Meenal Jain's version of Aao Na from Indian Idol 2 Piano Round is still fresh in my head. There is no way Anandi was going to compare to that. Ganesh said she didn’t perform at all. Daler said that she lost sur in 15 places. And then he insulted Vice Principal Sowmya Raoh by saying that she isn’t teaching the kids how to sing at all. Palash, instead of turning the other cheek, punched back and said that the judges didn’t know how to judge either. Overall, though, Anandroopa did decently. And she tried really hard so that her voice doesn’t sound childish like it has a tendency to do.
Now Ritu really caught me off guard with her intro. She started with a classical number and played the harmonium very nicely! I’m impressed that she took that chance because most people wouldn’t sing numbers that aren’t popular at this stage in the competition. Then she did an about face and sang I Wanna Make Love To You from Aitraaz. (Dear Uttam, I think she read Curlio). This is the song that made her lose out on the Top 12 in Indian Idol. But with it, she showed that she can sing all kinds of songs. She has a very powerful voice. I don’t particularly like this song—it kinda makes me cringe. But more power to her for singing it. Ganesh said that she needed to add a little bit more oomph to her performance. Daler was impressed with her sur in the classical number but told her to enunciate her words better in the second one. Mika and Palash got into it over Ritu, but I tuned most of it out. They really took it to the next level by talking about Ritu’s dad. I wouldn’t have put up with that. I actually felt really bad for Ritu because she seemed so dejected.
Now here’s what I don’t like about Neeti—she’s becoming over-confident. She knows she can hold the audience and she thinks that that is all she needs to win this competition. Her song choices have been the same. She hasn’t tried any type of variety. All she can really sing are item numbers. I know she has more stage presence than Ritu and Anandi, but if she could sing as well as either one of them, she might even beat out Rehan. A great performance but I would agree with Daler and say that she was totally out of sur. And I’m not even sure what songs she sang because they all sounded like one big song.
Rakesh started with the entire get-up from Mera Naam Joker—the clown outfit, a large heart, the red rubber nose. Of course, he sang Jeena Yahan, Marna Yahaan. He sang well and the whole thing worked, until he went into his next song. The clown outfit didn’t mesh well with Piya Haji Ali, which is a beautiful song. I kept thinking that he should have picked a better song combination or chosen a costume that fit well with both songs. Because the first part was good, and the second part would have been better had I not been distracted by the costume.
The bottom four were Anandroopa, Neeti, Ritu, and Rakesh. The faculty saved Anandroopa. During the contestant voting, Rehan and Anandroopa saved Neeti.
Now, I’d like to say something about their choice—it was so not based on merit. They were playing favorites and it's kind of obvious that they three of them have formed a clique. Also, both Rehan and Anandroopa know that if they are ever to come up against Rakesh or Ritu during the public voting, they’re going to lose.
So in a way, it was a very smart move by Rehan and Anandroopa. But, I also don’t think it’s fair that they saved Neeti. Ritu is a better singer and has shown more versatility. Neeti keeps repeating the same act over and over again, and frankly, it’s getting boring.
So Rakesh and Ritu face off in the Café Round. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Ritu.

Couldn't have put it better if I tried!
It would be interesting to know who India sides with. Both are underdogs of sorts! Obviously, Rehan and Anandi are clever creatures, but sooner or later Neethi will have to face the Indian votes. It is so predictable as to who the judges love... I think Rehan might win!

Ooooouw somebody is waving the * flag with pride! Every time I saw his face I kept whispering are you @!# kidding, are you #$@#$@ kidding me, are.. you... @#@#$ kidding.. me.
You are more then absolutely right when it comes to his performance. szjeck it out???!! Angel Salazar should sue him!
Last, I'm in the Rakhi-camp (adore her) whether it's a publicity stint or not. I would felt slapped in the face by all the nods made.
Anandrupa: Oooooohw she scored high points for the Patanga song.. I love love love it.. she sounded a bit like a Shamsad Begum-light. No idea why she choose to sing so many songs, just Mera piya gaye rangoon whould have been perfectly fine with me.
The voting? You're absolutely right! Anandrupa could be Alexis's Indian niece.. Joan Collins would be proud!
Ritu: Eh what was that line again... oh yes: This can only happen in India! Was it my perverted mind or was there indeed a pole on stage?
I agree "I wanna make love to you" is a horrible, horrible, horrible song but that’s what makes it hilarious. I do think that this should be the last time she did the Aitraaz song.
Rehan: Liked his Kale Megha better but this was fine too, totally agree with you about the voting.
Rakesh: The monologue from Mera naam Joker is one of the most powerful scenes in hindi cinema. I loved seeing it again. Hated how he sang.
Neetie: I think it's time she goes back to the Shire.
As Fame X winds down to its final five contestants, I can’t help but feel a little disillusioned.
Hear, hear!!
Loved your recap darling!
