American Idol rushes through Hollywood Week curlio
 2007-02-13 21:57:02
Television American Idol fast-forwarded through Hollywood Week to get us up to the top 24 results tomorrow. It was all very fast and speedy, and definitely eliminated the whole "I didn't get enough airtime" argument that usually comes up in the top 24 shows. Off with our speedy recap.

Naturally we opened with a clip about how AWESOME last season's contestants are doing. They mentioned Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks (but no one else). First up from Hollywood week were the girls, as there are twice as many girls as there are guys this year. Each group of six girls goes in front of the judges alone and sings for 30 seconds. After that, they head back up for their results.

The first group of girls included Jory Steinberg, who impressed in the New York auditions. She was dressed like Paula Abdul so she joked she wanted to win so she can dress like her. Also in her group were Geri Guyer, Kelly Caruso, Lisa Morrison, Christen Itam, and Jeromishisa Lemar. Simon Cowell broke the bad news that they are all six going home. He said none of them were good and it was a terrible start to the day. Simon told the others to keep that as a warning, as the judges expect better. Meanwhile the other girls were all upset that all six were eliminated.

The next group included Perla Meneses (the Shakira clone) and Army Reservist Rachel Jenkins. Perla talked to Ryan about the "it" factor, and got off the plane waving at all of her "fans" some of whom wondered who she was. Meanwhile Rachel was hoping to make her husband, who is over in Baghdad, proud. Perla went through while Rachel was out. Simon warned Perla about her overpersonality problem. Perla is upset about that, as she has a bubbly personality and she can't help being herself. She says they think she's a joke.

From the next group, Baylie Brown goes on (she was the country bumpkin fashion queen). Some of the other stand outs that were eliminated on Day one included Ashlynn Carr (who got a second chance to audition), Porcelana Portino, and Sarah Burgess (the girl who lied to her dad about where she was going).

The last girl up was Nicole Turner, who was debating what to sing. Her mother and aunt wanted her to sing "Ain't No Way." At first she didn't want to, then she changed her mind and sang it. Afterward she told the judges she did it to make her mother proud. She wasn't feeling the song. After she gets cut, her mother wants to talk to the judges to explain that it's her fault. Simon tells them it wasn't the song, and a mini-fight ensues. Ultimately it makes no difference, as Nicole is still going home.

Day two is for the guys to perform. They realize that as the girls outnumber them, this is a good thing for them. This section of the show was very brief and really only focused on one group, with USS Ronald Reagan Idol winner Jarrod Fowler and Matt Sato (the young kid whose parents couldn't come to the audition. Matt goes on, Jarrod is going home. That was really about all they highlighted from the guys. They did mention a few guys who made it through, including Nick Pedro, the beatboxer Blake Lewis, Phil Stacey, and Sean Michel.

Then we were on to the group competition. Rather than recap it in the disjointed way it was broadcast, I'll go over each group from beginning to end.

Matt Sato had a lot of trouble finding a group, and he should have kept it that way. The group he found wasn't all that great, and Matt forgot the words (after Simon's usual "do not forget the words" reminder at the start of the performances too). Matt went home, while the other unnamed girls in his group went on.

The group of Chris Sligh, Rudy Cardenas, Thomas Lowe, and Blake Lewis was having a minor problem with choreography. They seemingly overcame it though and were absolutely awesome together for their performance. All four of them went on to the next round.

Baylie Brown teamed up with best friends Antonella Barba and Amanda Coluccio. The friends were fighting over what song to pick. Baylie meanwhile decided to stay out of it. They finally chose a song but they can't remember the words. Amanda gets sick of practicing and wanders off to flirt with some of the boys. Baylie and Antonella decide to go to bed. The next day, Baylie is worried about forgetting her words. Amanda says they will all three be friends, no matter what. Baylie does indeed forget her words when they're singing, but Amanda covers up a bit. Then she messes up her own words. Baylie ends up going home while Amanda and Antonella go on. That makes Baylie mad as she worked the hardest and didn't stay up and flirt.

Gina Glocksen, Jessia Gordon, Perla Meneses, and Marisa Rhodes formed a group, but immediately three of them are upset at Perla as she isn't good at harmony. Gina says she is in a competition and doesn't care about anyone else (which immediately makes me not like her by the way). Simon gives them (and Dusty) the bad news that Perla is going home.

Sundance Head teams up with L'Paige Bedford and Robyn Troup. Paula tells Sundance he is going on, but the girls are going home. Simon tells her she was generous as Sundance messed up twice. Sundance says he needs to get something right here.

On to the next day, and we're up to the three rooms already. Fifty-six people remain at the beginning of the day, but by the end, of the day after one last attempt to impress the judges only 40 are left.

Room one, which includes Blake and Chris, gets to go on. Room two, is also getting to go on. As there are only three rooms and room three can hear the cheers from two other rooms, they know they are going home. Sanjaya Malakar realizes his sister isn't in the winners circle, and goes to find and console his sister. Amanda and Antonella remain friends, despite Amanda being cut too.

Tomorrow we find out who the top 24 are. Is it just me or did we go entirely too fast through the Hollywood stuff? Let's postulate on the reasons why they have fast forwarded through this stuff!

Tonight's show was a mess. It was poorly edited and confusing to follow.

The high point of the night was the
Chris Sligh, Rudy Cardenas, Thomas Lowe, and Blake Lewis quartet.

How did the contestants get their last shot at impressing the judges? It was never described. I assume that it was one-at-a-time as it was last year...

The only other high point of this show was that both Kellie Pickler wanna-bes (Baylie Brown and the girl from NC with the sad family story) were cut.

Baylie Brown is getting her 15 minutes of fame - at least locally. She's going to be interviewed on a couple of radio stations and one TV morning show...

Although I am glad that Bailie Brown got cut from the show, i did not enjoy how she was cut from the show. The two friends that she paired with were the cattiest, fakest, Laguna Beach wanna-bes who can only build up their self esteem by ripping on others. Antonella, the girl that made it through, was guilty by association for having such a skanky friend. She could have been just as bad as her friend and AI simply made some edits to make her more likable. She will not be getting my vote. As well, like Curlio, I did not enjoy Gina and her "I'm in it for me" comments. This attitude will not get her to the winner's circle. Just ask Katherine McPhee.

This ep. was hastily put together as they showcased too few people, and too many who go the boot or just plain stunk. I wanted to find out more about both back-up singers, the Fidel Castro guy (who I learned got the boot for not conforming to style), Jack Osbourne's Maxi-Me clone, the pedi-cab driver, the rollergirl who sang better than her two friends, and others. The show was rushed and could have been streched out to three hours easily. If they can stretch a results show to an hour, they can stretch a week's worth of Hollywood heck into three hours.

Waiting for the real show to start...

Glad to see everyone thought the show was rushed and choppy. What happened to the pedi cab driver Tami Gosnelli? Maybe I just missed it as they speed through the show. (I thought I saw her in one clip...but poof the clip was gone)I just felt like no one was given a chance, well, except the two (sundance , amanda) who forgot their lines and went on anyway. The only highlight of this show was the group of Chris, Rudy, Thomas and Blake...I want to hear more from them! I hope the next show slows down so we can hear people sing.

I really never get the hate, so please don’t think this is addressed to anyone in particular. Baylie Brown, though not one of my favourites made the huge mistake of actually blanking out and I am a little sad that she was cut, when Amanda wasn’t. If Amanda would have made it to Top 40, I would have been really pissed off. What a bitch! Antonella was literally torn. Anyway, the good news is – Simon talked to Baylie afterwards and said something to the effect that they could not pass her through as she blanked out, but he added that he expects her to audition next year, because say what you will, Simon knows what the market wants! I mean who would have thought Carrie Underwood would grab Best New Artist besides Simon? Strangely all this Baylie hate makes me like her!

Matt Sato – Did anyone notice that his mum hung up on him after he said he forgot the words and did not make it? If it was editing, it was darn cruel and if it was not, boy!

Perla was out at the freaking airport itself! I don’t hate Gina for being honest. They are there to be the next American Idol and from the looks of it all, Perla must have irritated the heck out of the gals more than we’ll ever know.

Was it me or did Sundance sound totally off?

I love Chris Sligh – Awesome! Blake Lewis might get really old real soon if he introduces beat-boxing in every performance. Although I must admit his beat-boxing made the song much livelier!

Here’s the deal about Malakars – They formed a group with Jordin Sparks in the equation and Sanjaya as well as Jordin made it, Shyamali obviously didn’t! In a way, I am glad she was out, because she garnered a lot of negativity with her attitude at the auditions. Even if it was a joke, people did not get it!

Aw, but Sanjaya is cho chweet! I just hope for his sake that he is really good, if not he should leave early like Will Makar rather than be Kevin or John or A-Fed!

So, minus the spoilers, here’s the question –

Who do y’all think truly deserves a shot?

You'll likely find little joy in tonight's episode momROCKS. Tonight they reveal the Top 24, which in the past has been an entire episode of people traveling up the elevator to find out their fate.

as for the Baylie hate - for my part she set herself up for it with her pre-audition clip. Sitting there talking about how she's not a country girl, with her mother saying she doesn't sound country, and Baylie going on about how she needs to get out of this tiny town because she needs to be a city girl. Then what does she do, not once but twice? Sings country. Yeah, great and awesome way of showing you're not a country girl but a big city girl. Her twang is worse than Pickler's twang. I never said she wasn't a good singer. Plus, Simon's right she's cute and marketable. But still, probably thanks to AI editing, she comes off looking ungrateful.

Let's face it, AI brings out strong opinions in all of us, we'd better start getting ourselves set to let most of it roll off our backs. Y'all can like Baylie or hate her if you like. I personally don't like her and am happy to see both her (and Jamie Lynn by the way) GONE. I'll be even happier to see Gina gone or lose the attitude. I'm willing to write her "I'm in it for me" attitude as being for the group competition only. AI voters have notoriously liked the good-girl attitude better than the bad girl one though (remember Brenna?). Gina needs to lose the 'tude or lose the votes - it's that simple.

If there are 40 people left and the show is 60 minutes, we are not going to have any time to see too much. With 16 minutes of commercials, one minute for the theme song, 2-3 minutes worth of recap, and another 2-3 for this episode's setup (for those who do not know the premise), that leaves less than a minute to highlight each of the 40 people. I am sure they will speed through a few rejects, but they will also linger on a few to add to the drama. They may speed through a few of the Top 24 as well, which will be irksome if this happens.

Well, young prince, I'm with you on this one. I liked the girl but I think the crazy discord with her two "partners" through her off, they may be passing up the highest potential there. How you folks can dislike her so easily says so much about you and little about her. Chill! Will

Well, I kinda hope you folks never here me talk. I probably sound way more southern than Kellie or Baylee. I love you guys anyway and would eventually win you over (in spite of my twang) with some of my good barbecue and tater salad, you'd be helpless in my power.

Is there something about us Southerners that break some kind of tribal code or "taboo"??? Enquiring minds want to know.

Baylie Brown. Say what you will, but as a concert promoter, I saw a tremendous amount of potential in her. Her voice had a quality to it, a depth not usually found in someone her age. I could see her as a Christian artist. I would hire her for a concert in a heartbeat. . .

Late as usual! Pedi driver did make it through, I think. I saw her in the same room as Sanjaya. I thought they took too long with the audition shows and not long enough in Hollywood. I think the rush comes down to ratings. Feb. is a big rating month and they want to get to the voting off.

What about Lakeeshia? Did she make it through?

And Will, as a Carolina girl through and through, I bet I could rival your twang. Maybe we should start a "How to speak Southern" thread here on Curlio.?!

Try not to take things so personally - there will be plenty more hate before the season is over. Beyond that, I think it's silly to take it personally whenever someone dislikes an artist. What the heck do I care if y'all don't like my Constantine? That leaves more concert tickets for me thanks.

When it comes to music and personalities, first impression is hard to overcome. There is almost always instant love and instant hate abounding for every contestant.

As for the "twang" issue, my object to Baylie's twang is that it came right after her mother insisting she didn't sound country (no one with a twang like that can NOT sound country. I'm sorry. Twang = Country music.). I love Southerners and their accents.

I think AI has made a big mistake by doing what they've done over the past month. First they show tonnes of really bad auditions, or auditions of those who are decent, but they don't ultimately get very far in hollywood. This part isn't new, but then they go and shorten the hollywood rounds by a full episode. In the past, for me anyway, the hollywood round was a chance to get to know the competitors better, to see the ones I didn't see in the auditions. This time, they blew past everyone and the few they did showcase, you'd already seen in the auditions. I remember last year being pleasantly surprised with Eliott Yamin, someone who they didn't show in the auditions, but you got to see in hollywood.

Now, my longwinded point comes to this episode tonight, where they walk down the long room to get the final decision. In the past, because you got to know the competitors better, it felt like there was something at stake, that you really felt for the person when they got cut right at the end. This time, you don't know 90% of the people they're going to judge. Heck, most of them you only glimpsed, and none of them have been heard singing. So why bother to care tonight? Someone gets cut, so what? I never got to know them.

Anyway, just my point. Sorry for the essay.

OMG I can't believe I'm kinda agreeing with Will and sprout on this one, I really didn't like Baylee that much re: picklerx2 but I think she worked hard and Amanda did not. Therefore, I was pulling for the underdog..... Hoping the one out would be Amanda, But I'm happy Amanda got hers anyway and my Chris got through!!

Well, to know who you think deserves to win would be precious but I was actually asking about who deserves to be in Top 24 – now that the results are out – I have a few names who deserved to make it and didn’t as opposed to some who did like Sundance – I am not happy!

Actually no! Nick Pedro is the one. He forgot his lyrics last year and bowed out before they could kick him out. This year he is in the Top 24 finals!

Curlio honey, of course you are totally entitled to hate anyone you like, it is just an opinion and no one is ever completely right or wrong when it comes to an opinion. Here’s what I think about Baylie and the country fiasco – the obvious comparison with Carrie Underwood is to be blamed. I wonder how much stuff is scripted and how much is authentic. Anyway, now that she is cut, no point in going on about it. I just thought it was unfair that she was cut when Amanda wasn’t – in fact Baylie asked Amanda to give her a cue and Amanda said that would make her forget her own lyrics! So you know! Jamie Lynn did not even get any exposure after her audition story and I am a little glad. I agree with many here that no one should get through based on looks, back-stories etc – singing should be the priority.

Unfortunately, AI voters are real fickle! I mean even if a goody two shoes appears – either the person is fake or too blah! Let’s face it, we have seen many goody two shoes and they have slipped out of our consciousness. Problem with Reality TV is that a little more than just being a goody two shoes is what makes one stick in people’s mind. I am not saying that Gina was right but she was not really abrasive like Brenna – she was foolish to make that statement. If she gets abrasive – I would be the first one to oppose her, but the will to win is not really wrong – just need to sing beautifully to support that will! I hope for Gina’s sake that she does not have an attitude that you mention and I missed because you are right, that’s it for her!

Oy! Whoa – I don’t think Will was trying to be insulting, I just think his love for blonde beauties made him word that a little undiplomatically. The argument about hating blonde southern gals is raging since few weeks now and this probably was the climax. Curlio, I don’t think anyone in their right mind would dare to insult anyone here, least of all you () and if I know Will, and I think I do, he is sitting there shocked, wondering, “What the heck did I say to Curlio?”

I don’t think anyone is taking this personally and if they are – please stop – this is just a stupid show! Curlio, you are right, we still have Jordin Sparks hatred, Sanjaya Malakar hatred, and so many other coming our way.
