First 4 contestants ousted from American Idol dusty
 2007-02-22 23:04:08
Television At least it was not a bad start for the season vote wise. Almost 32 million votes were cast.

After the small talk where the judges told Ryan Seacrest that it was the girls game to lose, Ryan announced the names of the stars that got booked to appear on the show this season. They were; Diana Ross, Jon Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Tony Bennett, Martina McBride, Lulu and Peter from Herman's Hermits and Barry Gibb.

It was finally time for a recap where they pointed out that the girls performed much better than the boys.

After the recap and before any announcements of who would be going home they were doing a group performance. During the group performance it looked like they cut a part of the performance because it skipped and it felt like the part where several contestants had their own line to sing got completely cut out. it was a decent performance of Tears for Fears' song "Sowing the seeds of love".

Ryan had a small talk with the guy group, nick said he wasn't nervous but petrified. Ryan also talked to Chris Sligh, where Sligh said he was a bit nervous because of the banter with Simon, as he doesn't know how America took his banter with Simon and he is afraid it got taken as disrespect. Sligh addressed the viewers and said;"America, I love Simon!". While Ryan started talking, I heard Simon's voice on the background telling either Paula or Randy "I like this guy!".

The first line of guys got to hear their fate, and they went down the line, Brendon Rogers, Jason Sundance Head, Chris Richardson, Nick Pedro, Blake Lewis heard they were safe, the last person standing, Paul Kim got to hear it was the end of the road for him. Randy told him to keep on rocking and to find songs that excel him, and that it all comes down to the song. Paula told Paul that he has enough to make it and that he got a nice voice a great range and tone and that he'll be great in the studio. But that in the competition he just tried too hard and that he picked the wrong song. This all got followed by the "goodbye" performance of Paul, which was a bad crappy performance, which made his performance on Tuesday look good.

After the commercial break, Ryan talked to the girls and Lakisha said she was still nervous.

The first line of girls heard their fate, Jordin Sparks, Stephanie Edwards, Sabrina Sloan, Leslie Hunt and Melinda Doolittle hear they are safe. The only person left standing was Antonella Barba, and she expected to be sent home, however a surprise is thrown as Ryan tells her than she is safe too. After that Amy is asked to come to the middle and she's immediately told that she's going home.

Simon told her that she didn't stand out amongst 12 people and that, that was her problem. The performance from her that followed the announcement that she was going home also showed why she was going home as it was full of pitch problems.

Now it was time for the guest performance, after a small talk with Ryan where Fantasia announced that she was going to star in the Broadway show "The Color Purple" produced by Quincy Jones, who was also in the audience. Ryan asks Quincy if Fantasia will bring it, Quincy says certainly and wants to start talking about the Broadway show, but gets quickly interupted by Ryan saying that Fantasia will start on Broadway on April 10th. Fantasia then performs the song "I'm Here" from the Broadway production. It was a good performkance, however if she would have done that performance while she was a contestant on the show, they would have told her that she screamed too much. Now of course she got a standing ovation from the judges.

The rest of the girls were up to hear their future, this meant that Haley Scarnato, Lakisha Jones, Gina Glocksen and Alaina Alexander were going through to next week and that Nicole Tranquillo hit the end of the road. With her goodbye-performance it was clear why she didn't get enough votes, she was off key and pitchy all over in the performance.

The last of the guys heard their fate next, Chris Sligh, Phil Stacy, Jared Cotter, A.J. Tabaldo heard they were safe, the last two guys standing were Sanjaya Malakar and Rudy Cardenas, Ryan said that one of them would be going home, and that the other one was one of the guys in the top 4. To no surprise to me, Sanjaya was the one staying for at least another week and Rudy was sent home.

Ryan asked the judges what Rudy could do in the rest of his career. Simon replies that he can't turn an OK singer into a great singer. Ryan said that he clearly asked the wrong judge and asks Randy for his opinion. Randy said to find out what Rudy does the best. Paula said that Rudy's pitch is perfect and that he has a great voice and that she loves his falsetto. Unlike the goodbye performance of the other 3 contestants, Rudy's performance is an improvement compared to Tuesday.

Cant complain that Sanjaya is still around, but his performance didnt merit a spot in the top 4.

No surprise Paul Kim is out. He lacked emotion in the original.

Really surprised Antonella is around or Leslie Or Alaina. They were worse than Amy.

The guys are in big trouble. They're lucky that the show format forces six guys to be chosen, instead of the older format. However, there's too many girls that are too similar in style and voice, so maybe they'll start cancelling each other out by the time the finals come around.

Interesting perspective.

I was thinking that she'd have a heck of a time winning this year against this group of women. I was also thinking what Curlio said - what's up with the standing ovation from the judges? They'd have fried her for screaming too much when she was competing.

"Diana Ross, Job Bon Jovi, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Toni Bennet, Martina McBride, Lulu and Peter from Herman's Hermits and Barry Gibb"

Oh my! That's quite a list. I wonder what they'll be doing...

We know that week 7 will be the music of ABBA.

Diana Ross - Motown? Harmonizing groups of the 60's (like the Supremes, Temptations, etc)?

Jon Bon Jovi - Music of the 80's? Rock night? I can't imagine that Bon Jovi's collection of music is sufficient to have a "Bon Jovi" night like they had a "Queen" night last year, but maybe...

J.Lo - Since she just signed this week, there's no telling what she'll show up on, probably "currently on a Billboard chart" night.

Gwen Stefani - I have no idea. Anyone?

Tony Bennett - No Barry Manilow this year, so someone has to represent the crooners of the 50's and 60's and/or Big Band music.

Martina McBride - Country night. They've had one each of the past two years.

Lulu and Peter from Herman's Hermits - more 60's? Hmmmm.

Barry Gibb - either music that he and his brother have written (which I hope) or the ever-dreaded "Disco Night"

Should be fun!

Shenova - don't underestimate Bon Jovi - they have 20 years worth of music under their belt and more than enough for a Bon Jovi night. However I think it will be more of a rock night probably. As for Diana Ross, she has a new album out of love songs. Gwen Stefani could show up on the "currently on Billboard" night, with J.Ho (no typo) getting the Latin night instead. And as an aside, you'd better watch out or you may find yourself suddenly with the power to edit all posts (including news articles)

Thank God for TIVO, I can't stand to hear the losers sing.

I guess Paul Kim's special underwear let him down.

Sundance and Sanjaya could have cut if the Producers didn't give them lots of camera time with their back stories.

OK, I'm all in for Jordin. She's more confident than Melinda and more attractive than Lakisha.

Hey, Contemporary Christian music fans, do you like Michael W Smith? Check out what he had to say about Jordin:

Interesting!

I can't say that I am a huge contemporary Christian music fan, but I have seen Michael W. Smith in concert four times - twice many years ago when he toured with Amy Grant (before her divorce/scandal/remarriage), and twice since we've lived here.

Ironically, I was thinking about him when I was writing the bit about "how has Melinda stayed in the background this long?". The last two times that we've seen him, Michael has had two of his background singers take center stage and sing lead for one song. Melinda sings in the same style from what we have seen out of his background singers.

The four that went home were not surprising of course. It was not surprising that the ones that should have gone home, Sundance and Antonella, did not since they were on the VFTW site. I still do not understand why Antonella has not been kicked off the show by AI. I guess if you are attractive and flash your Ta-Tas on the Internet, it is OK, but if you are unattractive and do the same, you get the boot. I have zero respect for her and cannot wait for her to leave.

The other thing I do not understand are these cheesy group songs. The judges (Simon mainly) complain every now and then that people sound like amusement park singers, and then every recap show turns into the Brady Bunch revue to fill up time. As Luv stated, thank God for Tivo!

Ben ben ben... you should know that Sundance and Antonella stayed not due to VFTW but because they had the airtime and the personality (or in Antonella's case the looks) to land them another shot. You want proof that VFTW doesn't have the pull they think they do.... look at how fast Kevin Covais got the boot last year. He was their nominated "worst." Didn't they end up going with Taylor (as their 3rd or 4th pick) then claiming victory because he won the whole thing? I don't visit the site at all, so I only know what people tell me about it.

Don't worry, Antonella will be gone before the final 12 are selected. Did Ryan actually say that Sanjaya was in the top 4 in terms of votes? Unvelievable!! He too will soon be gone.

It was disrespectful the way they Ryan cut off Quincy Jones when he was speaking about the Broadway play. You don't do that to someone of his stature in the music industry. Word to the wise Ryan, but then again.....

As far as VFTW goes, my fear is that they will have enough influence to get Sundance and Antonella to the Top 12. I would not mind Sundance making it that far since the guys really stink and someone has to make it from that group. But, Antonella would be replacing someone really deserving. I do not actually know how much pull the VFTW site has. I actually browsed it for the first time this week. But I do know that America has made some wonky votes in the past and something has to be influencing some voters.

I am very okay with the results last night. Pretty acurate I would say. I would not be suprised if the Indian hair boy and Antonilla make the top twelve. They love controversty that we all know stimulates buzz about the show, or maybe the demographics will fall that way.

I think Shenova would be a great addition to your site. She is a strong voice, though a bit "bambi-phobic"! I say that with the sass of a feisty brother. Will

If it winds up the 6 best female and male singers from this week would you pay good money and stand in line to see them. I wouldn't now, but maybe I will become more attached? I only have a small part of my music dinner plate I am willling to give over to "diva-ville salad"!

That being said I really hope he at least makes it to the final three, because to me the fact that all of the better female performances (except Lakisha yaya!) sang Aretha songs bothers me. CHRIS SLIGH RULES

i can live with it.

i actually think that nicole is a good singer and should have stayed awhile. yes, it really was comepletely the "wrong vibe" as randy said though after watching it back a few times i think she really did have one of the better vocal ranges.

so, how much of it was because she had an attitude during the follow up interview?

maybe it is more interesting to figure out who is going to get the free 'chicken little' ride this year. i vote tits and arse every time....e.g., antonella. throw in some grrl on grrl action ala what's running around the internet and i am ready to take bets on it.

any takers?

I am not that brave to correct anyone! But, I do it on the sly when required! Power of editor!

Actually, I got my start when I suggested that Curlio should recap Reality Episode of Rock Star INXS! Next thing I knew Dusty mailed me asking me to do that instead! And that was that!

I am not sure if typos are the reason why Curlio said that! There have been many typo and spell correctors and I don’t know if you have seen Curlio go all intense on them, if they keep on hammering, I have! So that’s not it!

The point is you definitely have the passion and the spark and I second the notion of you joining as an editor, if the notion stands and you agree!

By the by, I still maintain Sanjaya is not a bad singer, the song was an awful choice. I hope he steps up next week, because irrespective of how he does, he will remain in the competition, because it has come to pass, what I had feared! Wow, I am suddenly sounding like Galadriel! Come to pass? Fantastic!

No real upsets as far as eliminations are concerned! Is it me or the gals this year are really good looking?

Was I the only one who thought Sligh and AI went in an overdrive to do damage control?
