American Idol Top Ten do Gwen Stefani curlio
 2007-03-27 21:50:04
Television The top 10 on American Idol were given the lovely Gwen Stefani as their mentor this week. For the most part they did her proud, with many of them doing great or okay.

Ryan Seacrest finally announced the theme, which was rather broad if you ask me. Because Gwen Stefani was the mentor it was all about No Doubt songs and the bands who inspired them. We were naturally treated to a "this is how awesome Gwen is" clip. In it Gwen said that the artists she likes aren't the big voices, but are more known for their personality and character. She also said that she is more invested in the show now and wants to know who wins.

First up was LaKisha Jones, who picked an uptempo song by Donna Summer - "Last Dance." Gwen said she was blown away by LaKisha and joked that she should ask LaKisha for advice. The performance was great. It was nice to see her do something uptempo and fun. She showed a lot of personality and great vocals too. Randy Jackson liked seeing her do an uptempo song. He also liked the boots. Paula Abdul said LaKisha did Donna Summer proud. Simon Cowell also loved the boots, and that LaKisha was 30 years younger this week.

Chris Sligh was given a fan question, he was asked how he spends his down time. Sligh said they don't get a lot but he likes to knit and crochet. Then he admitted he mostly just sleeps. He decided to perform "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" by the Police. Gwen said he is great but he needs to work on watching his tempo. Naturally his tempo was off again when he performed. He is getting better vocally though. Randy thought the song choice was good but the biggest problem was the tempo as he was on a different pace than the band. Sligh agreed he was off, saying he was late with his choice. Paula thought it was nice vocally, but that Sligh needs to feel the beat. Simon said it was a mess and didn't think the song suited him. Then the music started playing and Simon objected that this wasn't the Oscars.

Gina Glocksen chose the perfect song for her voice according to Gwen. She picked "I'll Stand by you" by the Pretenders. This was honestly her best performance yet, vocally and emotionally. Randy loved the boots again, and said it was one of her best ever. He told her to believe and choose wise songs. Paula loves that she is improving each week. Simon told her it wasn't one of her best, it was her best. He told her that she has transformed herself over the last few weeks.

Sanjaya Malakar chose a No Doubt song, "Bath Water." Gwen felt bad for him, as he was forgetting words and the song is difficult. It was difficult, but hilarious again. The hair, the attitude, it was all just funny as hell. Randy was left speechless again, finally picking up on the hairdo. Then he said that Sanjaya can sing but he needs to put it out there. Paula told him to just go for it. Simon presumed there was no mirror in the dressing room. Sanjaya fired back that Simon was jealous that he couldn't pull it off. Simon told Sanjays that it doesn't really matter what they say, he's in his own little universe and if people like him then good luck.

Haley Scarnato chose one of Gwen's favorite songs. She started great on it according to Gwen but then started to add a different melody. Her performance of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" was pretty good overall, but a little pitchy. She was better last week. Randy told her it was alright as it was pitchy and it started rough. Paula told her that a beautiful song requires nothing other than singing the melody and being vulnerable. Simon told her it was sweet and forgettable. She needs to do better.

Phil Stacey was asked how it felt to go from an unknown to a big name in just a matter of weeks. He said that they really never notice it as they're very busy. He chose to do the Police's "Every Breath You Take." Gwen was pleasantly surprised by his voice. She told him to not do a lot extra but just stick the the melody. He took her advice and had his best performance yet as well. He has a very nice voice, which finally seemed to come back to him on this performance. Randy liked it saying it was 'kinda nice' because he didn't push it. Paula told him it was a good choice as it showed off the color and personality in his voice. Simon said it was very good, and a great song choice. It was the first time Simon felt Phil was taking the show seriously.

Melinda Doolittle blew everyone away, including Gwen with her choice of Heaven Knows by Donna Summer. It was uptempo and fun. She didn't stick to her usual Diva blow 'em away type of song. Randy told her that she looks at the words of the song and sings with feeling. Paula says she has charisma from the word go, and is fun and joyful. Simon didn't think this was the performance where she was the best, but it was still vocally outstanding. He added that he hated the outfit.

Blake Lewis chose "Love Song" by the Cure. Gwen told him to be careful where he sticks the beatboxing in. She was looking forward to seeing how he does with the band. Except for a few pitchy moments, it was pretty darn good. There was no beatboxing, which made me happy because I don't think it owuld have fit. Randy told him that he wasn't wild about the song choice, but Blake made the best of it. Paula loved that he was taking risks and being original. He makes the show hip and contemporary. Simon told him he is the strongest guy in the competition, but to be care of entering the "Chris Daughtry Zone"* see note at end*. He told him to not do his own thing all the time, as it gets boring.

Jordin Sparks chose to stay young and hip with "Hey Baby." Gwen was shocked at the choice, then that Jordin made it sound more musical than she thought it was. She also likes that Jordin is cute and refreshing. It wasn't her best vocal, but it was fun and cool. I loved it. Randy thought it was risky, but she could sing anything. He told her she could be a recording artist. Paula told her to celebrate the fact that she is young, hip, and adorable. Simon told her she is the most improved over the last few weeks, but that it was a bit copycat-ish.

Chris Richardson also chose a No Doubt song, "Don't Speak." Gwen was hoping he would just stick to the melody and not do the vocal olympics thing that that he usually does. She thought it would be beautiful if he would just focus on the feeling of the song. The performance was absolutely horrific, off pitch and full of that usual "I don't know why I hate his voice I just hate his voice" stuff. Randy thought it was interesting and liked Chris' flavor on the song. Paula told him he was good. I was ready to yell at the TV (okay, I actually had already paused and yelled at this point), when Simon finally gave me the answer I wanted. Simon wasn't crazy about the vocal, telling Chris he needs to pay more attention to the vocal. He did add that he liked the arrangement though.

My Bottom:
Chris Richardson - firmly at the very bottom, because his performance was bad and he just hits my "I hate him” nerve.
Sanjaya Malakar - though funny, still not good

My Middle:
Chris Sligh - nice vocals, but still just eh. He can do better
Haley - she was better last week. She was okay tonight.

My Top Six:
Melinda and LaKisha - for breaking out of their molds and doing wonderful.
Phil and Gina - for finally and fully delivering
Blake - pitchy moments aside, it was darn good. And no beatboxing gets him into the top
Jordin - ‘cause she’s fun, cute, a good singer, and will sell millions of records

Okay, and last, my note, regarding Simon’s comments to Blake. Do you all realize that with that little offhanded comment, Simon just completely and totally justified what we all said about Chris Daughtry last year? We said he was boring and sticking to his thing too much, while the judges and his little fans adored him and fawned all over him. We hated that he turned everything into rock and refused to change. Simon finally acknowledged what we had felt for all those painful weeks.

I really like Chris Richarson, I believe he is the best of all the boys. He has a very original voice. I really enjoy his singing.
Melinda , Lakisha and Jordan are really good
At this point I think Sanjaya should leave in peace because this is a singing competion not a halloween contest.

Thanks for a great recap. I only got the last half taped. I missed Sanjaya completely! Man, I hate that!

My nephew, who is in college, has told me that the latest rage is to have AI parties and then everyone vote for Sanjaya. I am thinking he will be here awhile! ohhh

Though I respect your opinion about Chris Daughtry, I have to be one of those fawning fans and say look who's album is doing the best and getting the most air play on the radio from last year's group. (I don't keep up with country so I'm not sure if Pickles' album is out and how it is doing.) Obviously somebody likes him...other than me!

I think Blake has the sound and the style that you would be more apt to hear on the pop stations and that may be one thing that Simon may be thinking. He might not want Blake to make the same mistakes that Chris made (yes I am woman enough to admit, he made mistakes) to get voted off so early. Although Melinda and Lakeshia have the best voices, I'm not so sure you would hear them on the pop radio stations.

On a side note , Daughtry did a free concert in Greensboro, NC last Friday night and sources say it was really good. (No, I wasn't one of the crazy 23,000 folks that showed up) It was done to kick off the ladies basket ball playoffs (Can you tell I am no sport nut!) -oops-

He is very good at what he does; Rock. But that was also his downfall on AI last year, he didn't do anything BUT rock. He turned every song, every week into a rock song. (ONE whole exception) THAT was our main objection, NOT his voice. (except for that whole singing out of the throat part)

Well, if Chris Daughtry was indulgent and as boring as you said, it is amazing that he is double-plat and rising. Simon also said Chris was the first one who refused to compromise. Chris did vary the performances and wisely sang "What a Wonderful World" and "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" with restraint and skill.

I agree unfortunately, Sanjaya will be around for awhile, but this is sad. Perhaps if he makes it to the finale (and its possible with Stern, VFTW, etc, this could be the downfall of AI or the producers will have to intervene somehow (perhaps offer him a bribe to leave on his own....lol.) I am really worried.

CONSPIRACY THEORY CONSPIRACY THEORY CONSPIRACY THEORY CONSPIRACY THEORY

Sanjaya is in league with American Idol to actually get thrown off the show. He was just TOO darn WIERD tonight, that had to be on purpose. The joke is on him, though (and us, too!) because he's going to be safe again. He'll probably last a couple of weeks more.

1. Gina - A unique mix of trashiness and skill. Simply outstanding.

2. Melinda - Disco is never necessary, but the vocals in the second half were master class. And for that, I give my girl an endless supply of mad props.

3. Haley - A strange way to sing a Cyndi Lauper song. But I liked it! And she's a star. So there!

4. Sanjaya - The word 'bizarre' is getting even more bizarre. I think he may be in the process of defining his own rogue personal performance style. I was, for once, able to sit back and enjoy these antics throughout without cringing (all that much). Now THAT's what I call entertainment.

5. Phil - Sure, he looks like that turtle that tried to race Bugs Bunny, and consequently, if he put on a long black wig that covered his face he could pass as Joey Ramone too, easily, but my point is this, someone taught him a thing or two about what NOT to do while on stage which resulted in him looking a little bit less like a turtle, and I kinda digged that.

6. Lakisha - The song was a bit much. Outstanding vocal, but still something misssing.

7. Jordin - Now tell me she didn't steal that outfit directly from the dressing room of America Ferrara. And tell me that wasn't confusing! Was it a train wreck? Was it experimental performance art? Did she out-Sanjaya Sanjaya? I dont knoooow. It was a moderate performance of a bad song. That's what it was! Which, in essence, I guess, makes it a moderately bad performance (or something like that).

8. Blake - Dakota Flanning was right -- beat-boxing during a love song is really distracting. And though he heeded her advice, still, I got the distinct impression he was being forced to sing. Like he was back at sunday school in the church choir, and he didn't want to be seen singing no choir-boy music, but still had to, to avoid punishment. And why the slow tempo? Why? I just didn't get it.

9. Chris - There is something good about Chris I can't quite put my finger on.

10. Chris Sligh - He sleeps on his down-time, he sleeps on his up-time, he sleeps on stage. What does that make him? Yea. That's right! A sl... [cue Oscar music]

Ha, my wife is a viewer and I only tuned in because of the Sanjaya story she told me. Sure enough! So, this from a first time viewer:

(1) Ms Jones and (2)Ms Doolittle just needed this venue to get them started. Both are fantastic. Can you imagine what Lakisha could do with the Star Spangled Banner on Opening Day of MLB? Can you say resonate?

(3)Gina, (4)Phil and (5)Haley rocked. Great songs, great voices, great performance.

(Not rated) Jordin Sparks glows. I could watch her sing anything.

(Not rated) Chris Sligh needs his own show. Didnt care much for his performance tonight but he is entertaining.

(Next to last)Blake has talent for the music industry but I dont think as a singer, more as a director. And finally (Last) Chris hurt my ears with his whine.

As for Sanjalaya, he doesn't rate to be on the show; but since globalization of electronic information via the web empowers people, I'd kind of like to see him make it to the very end, only to lose to the best voice Lakisha....

My internet connection is going on and off tonight, so I'll be brief...(HATE TIME WARNER CABLE! They are worlds behind Comcast)...

I didn't see Lakisha or Sligh, so they will not be included in rankings. Also, I consider Melinda so vastly superior to the other contestants that I'm taking her out of the rankings for this week (I agree with Simon, I hated her outfit).

1. Gina - so nice to see the girl at her best!
2. Phil - so nice to see the guy at his best!
3. Jordin - it was different and playful. I liked seeing her appear so confident. Its also good to see that her father has been there every week after the initial round.
4. Haley - it was just okay with a few good moments.
5. Blake - just okay. I'm not in love with his voice, it's just okay for me...
6.Sanjaya - do I even have to rank him? Living up to his legend
7. Chris R.- AAAUUUUGGGHHHH - if he's on for many more weeks, I'm going to have use the "mute" button more fervantly.

I say Gina is most improved, I'm enjoying her more every week.

Haley is pretty, but it may time for her to go. She'll be in the bottom three with Chris R and Sanjaya and his hideous hair.

Go Jordin! Love the huge smile with all those perfect teeth. You won't be able to beat Melinda, but you'll sale a zillion CD's, and I'll be first in line.

Another week has passed
AND SANJAYA still lasts !!
It was Gwen Stephani's week,
so lets look at a sneak- peek !!!! (i know.... really bad! )

Lakisha was great and fab. !
And it seems like she lost some of her flab,
she's doing the singing community proud
So lets all cheer her LOUD !!
(yay ! it rhymes ........)

Sligh used to be sky high !
Now he's just sad ,
And with hair like THAT and tempo all wrong
It ok to say he's really BAD !!!!

Gina, the one and only .....
her song ironically made me feel real lonely ...
She was simply divine ,
and deserved a toast of Champagne and wine!

Sanjaya oh Sanjaya , U did Ms. Gwen !
With that hairstyle of urs , i'll give u a 10 !
And despite all the critisism ( and all that jazz )
U have a certain Raz-Mataaz !!
( poetic licence at its finest )

Haley ..... sheesh , was just okay
And really there is nothing else to say .......

Phil , for me , just looked possessed ,
but he had some magic and had some zest.
he may be bald and he may be old ,
But that song , he most definetly sold !

Melinda Doolittle was nice ,
She can most definetly entice.
I like her ; WE like her ,and thats a fact
But i don't know , there was something that just lacked........

Blake was good enough i guess ,
But as weeks have passed , i've liked him less ...
Without his beat-boxing , his magic goes ,
AND he'll have less "Yays!" and more woes .......
(scary huh ? )

Jordin was just at par ,
and she wasn't the best by FAR.
But she's young , happening and hip,
And she could give Sanjaya a singing tip ......

And saving the last for worst was Chris ,
He's one singer I won't miss !
He had no charm, and his pitch was a mess
SAFE TO SAY AMERICA THAT TOMORROW , AI WILL HAVE ONE CHRIS LESS !
(get it ! as there are 2 Chris's in the competition ! HaHaHaHaHa )

Oh the humanity!
Yup that about sums it up !
It's finally over !!!!!!

AWAITING RESPONSES !!!
( YES, NOW THAT SCHOOL FIANLLY OVER FOR ME , I'M QUITE JOBLESS IN THE MORNINGS'S !!!! )

Note to all .......

Everyone thoght that Sanjaya would be like TERRIBLE during the Gwen week , and he was not THAT bad. That kid seems to have started some sort of cult in America ........

Top 2 -

Gina
Lakisha

Bottom 4 ( from best to worst )

Sligh
Sanjaya
Haley
Chris R.

Lets see what happens tomorrow .........

tc
(Zayra rocks)

PS- HAVE ANY OF U HEARD ZAYRA'S SONGS ...... THEY'RE ACTUALLY REALLY REALLY NICE . ESPECIALLY "DIGO NO"

Oh dear Lord. What does everyone on this site have against Chris Richardson? All of a sudden a guy who sings tenor is interpreted as whiny? Say what you want about the guy, but out of all the males left in the competition I think he's been the most consistent - and consistently GOOD, before all of you jump in with your two cents. Way too many people are quick to liken him to a certain Mr. Timberlake, despite the fact that Chris' voice is full when he hits the high notes instead of the falsetto crap Justin pulls. Add that to an endearing stage presence, and Chris is certainly one of the only reasons I'm tuning into Idol this season.

You totally misinterpretted what Simon said to Blake. He said he was in the "Chris Daughtry" zone because Blake does his own thing but like Chris, Blake runs the risk of becoming "too indulgent" which was Simon's one complaint about Chris. When Chris started changing things up, Simon of course praised Chris.

I also think Simon purposely said "Chris Daughtry" in the same sentence as "Blake" to signal to America that Blake was in the same caliber as "Chris Daughtry" which is front-runner of the guys since Chris was clearly the front-runner last year in terms of performance. TPTB know that the only Idol from this season that can sell records is Blake the way that last year they knew it was Chris Daughtry. TPTB know what they are saying...

"American Idol Top Ten do Gwen Stefani"

Do you know how bad that sounds?

Prediction: Sanjaya bows out of the show for "personal reasons" in the near future. That would signal the fact that the producers had enough of the VFTW/Stern side show and decided to buy Sanjaya out.

Sanjaya-OMG people please let him leave!!! He is such a joke.
Haley- just ok
Phil- I loved the bugs bunny turtle analogy.....I liked Phil
Melinda- She is by far the best singer, but can she win?
Blake- I may be one of the few, but I liked that he sang without the beat-boxing. There is something "Robin Williams"-ish about him.
Jordin- I didn't like the look...or the song...but that girl can sing
Chris R- eeew....bobs around like an iguana.

Hey Frank Galli, I hope you return and sign up for this website. That was good insight presented in a fresh way!

Speaking of fresh ways, thanks Zayra for the sing-song poems to delight my Wednesday mornings!

My thoughts (believing still that this is a singing contest, but will concede on the questionable styles presented to us):

Lakisha - She looked great and stylish and sounded wonderful. She is coming out of her shell and is looking warm and cheery, not cold and aloof. Nothing against her at all.

Chris Sligh - Do they give the singers ear pieces so they can hear the beat? This dude is always a hair fast and it is beginning to get annoying. Bob Jones would not approve.

Gina - she was sexy. She made me love that song. Much props to a fine performance. Her punk look is getting old. You can ripped your hose only so many times.

Sanjaya - whatever dude. You are the AI Court Jester and everyone is laughing at you. The boy can sing, but his hair thing is just becoming a distraction. Stop being a pet and man up!

Haley - Yawn. What did she do again? I was distracted by her large mole.

Phil - What did they do to his eyebrows? Guys eyebrows should not be tweezed and penciled in my opinion if there was nothing wrong with them in the first place. Phil just looked weird. Great vocals though.

Melinda - She is still leagues above everyone. Including Lakisha. They are both great singers, but Melinda works the crowd and involves the band. Lakisha tends to just stand in one spot. Another great performance and vocal. I stop watching the week she leaves.

Blake - Here is what I think happened with Blake. He was listening to Top 40 radio one day and heard Rihanna and Sean Paul and thought, "This is cool." Then, he snuck into his older brother's room and found his shoebox full of Sublime, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 311, and early No Doubt and thought, "This is the same music I just heard on the radio!" Blake, ska is not dancehall. Ska went out ten years ago. Your stuff is not current. And that tacky zipper sweater did not help matters at all.

Jordin - The song was a mess. So was her Pollyanna/Hitler's Youth ensemble.

Chris R - Go HOME!

I am so happy that Melinda and Lakisha broke out of their "same old same old" routine and added some variety to their repertoire. I do believe that they can both sing "anything."

Jordin sang a song that was directed directly to her age group; Chris R once again that he does not not sing very well, he always sounds so nasal!!

Phil pleasantly surpirsed me, and Chris S is sounding the same each week.

Gina was good and Haley just ok. Sanjaya has now resorted to gimmicks. I think this experience will affect him in a negative way for a long, long time.

Top five: Gina, Blake, lakisha, Melinda and Phil.

Bottom three: Haley, Sanjaya, Chris S.

I agree with the post that AI will find a way to get Sanjaya off the show. I didn't even vote last night, the first time for the entire season that I didn't. AI has to do something drastic before it becomes an even bigger circus than it is currently.
