The top 6 on American Idol gave it their all for Bon Jovi night. Bon Jovi songs are a bit harder to sing than most people give the band credit for. Jon Bon Jovi is an awesome vocalist, with a power that most can't match. Fortunately tonight didn't suck nearly as bad as many had feared. Let's face it, this could have been a bigger disaster than Latin night in season three!
Ryan Seacrest announced that last week's telethon raised almost $70 million. This week's show would feature the music of Bon Jovi (one of my favorite bands so I dreaded listening to the songs tonight). The clip of how AWESOME Bon Jovi is didn't go far enough in my opinion. I could have listened to a few more minutes of how awesome they are. Anyhow, Jon Bon Jovi and David Bryan were the mentors for the week. Jon first says his kids love the show. Jon thinks the idols need to bring sincerity to their delivery, these songs tell stories. He likes the show because it's the great unknown - you never know how the audience or the judges will respond.
Phil Stacey opened the show tonight with "Blaze of Glory." That particular song was written for Young Guns. Jon thought Phil knocked it out of the park. Phil was very excited tonight, as he loves Bon Jovi. He said he sang this song in front of the mirror with a comb in his hand. It was the perfect song for him. It had great vocals, and his performance was perfect. Honestly I liked it better than him singing during Country Week. Randy Jackson pointed out he recorded that with Jon Bon Jovi before saying it was the bomb. Paula Abdul thought it was the best opening all season long. Simon Cowell wasn't as big a fan of it though. He thought it was like a bad actor in the middle. He didn't hear any authenticity.
Jordin Sparks said her mother will flip out, as she grew up on Bon Jovi. Jon said she picked a difficult song to sing, "Livin' on a Prayer." He told her to change the notes if they were too hard for her to sing. He also added that he couldn't sing half that good at 17. Jordin was confident that it would work, she just needs to practice. Honestly I hated it. It was pitchy and she screamed the big notes instead of singing them. This was her worst ever. Randy thought it was tough for her as she's not a rocker. He liked the big notes in the chorus but the verses were rough. Paula said she went for it, knowing it was out of her range. Simon told the audience to cue the booing in advance. He thought she looked like something out of the Adams family. The singing was out of control verging on shrieking at times. He did agree that Jordin was at a disadvantage this week with it being guys rock songs.
Lakisha Jones was with Ryan for a fan question. Ryan asked her if she wanted to sit. She said that she wants the camera to get her slim side. Her question was if she had any vocal training. She said her only training was in church. She chose to sing "This Ain't a Love Song." Jon said it's a soul singer's song, and he was glad she found it. He told her the point of the song is that it's the biggest love song there is. He wanted her to think of herself as pleading as this man is walking out the door. He doesn't think she is going anywhere this week. Honestly it was one of her best. It was a wonderful performance. I'm glad to see she's back. Randy liked that she sang it to Simon like she wanted to prove something. Paula told her that the low and bottom tone of her voice is Kiki's money in her pocket. Simon told her he could kiss her after that. Ryan took her down to Simon and Simon kissed her. Simon then said he loved that she rose to the challenge.
Blake Lewis chose to sing "You Give Love a Bad Name." Jon was a little worried about his adventerous rendition. He said Blake will have to sell his interpretation of a song that a lot of people know and love. Blake said it's a risk, but if you don't take risks you'll never see anything new. Jon thought there was charm in it, but this is rolling the dice. I liked the changes that Blake made. It was new and interesting. But then he mixed it with the rock sound in the middle and that made it that much worse. It was a horrific mix. He should have done one way or the other, not the mix. Randy loved it, and called it the most original version of a song never on AI. Paula said this was a big leap of faith. Simon said half the audience probably loved it and the other half hated it. He added that this is what will keep him in next week.
Chris Richardson was given a fan question as well. He was asked what he tells himself before coming out onstage. Chris said he tells himself to just have fun. Jon said Chris had the task of singing one of their best known songs, "Wanted Dead or Alive." He told Chris to find the blues element to the song. Chris said he knew that Chris Daughtry did the song last year, and you can't have Bon Jovi night on AI without that song. Honestly Daughtry's version was awesome - Richardson sucked. As usual the judges liked it. Randy liked that he made the song his own. Paula said he did his thing. Simon wasn't sure if it was enough to stay on another week.
Melinda Doolittle told Jon that she is bad at rock. Jon told her he could teach her. She's got the pipes and the soul, he said. He liked that she brought the soul to "Have a Nice Day." Melinda said Jon told her to take it to church and she was like, okay I like church. Honestly I was disappointed. I was so ready for her to fail this week, but instead she rocked. It was great. Randy didn't think it was her best but it was great anyhow. He liked the Tina Turner attitude in there. Paula asked her how it felt to be a rock star. Simon thought she was like a young Tina Turner.
At the end of the night, George and Laura Bush had a message thanking everyone involved in last week's Idol Gives Back, including the viewers.
My rankings in order:
1. Phil Stacey - flawless vocals and performance. He picked the perfect song and did great with it. 9 out of 10
2. Melinda Doolittle - not quite as awesome as Phil, but she had her thing going on. Only slightly lower than Phil 8.5 out of 10
3. Lakisha Jones - just slightly lower than Melinda, the beginning was a tad shaky, but she really recovered well and did great. This on a night I thought she would bomb! 8 out of 10
4. Blake Lewis - nice changes he made at the beginning and at the end, but the middle part didn't fit. 5 out of 10
5. Jordin Sparks - out of her element. Screaming + Bon Jovi = bad. 2 out of 10
6. Chris Richardson - He's Chris. It was Bon Jovi. 0 out of 10. (I'd make it negative if I could.)
I, too, am a huge Bon Jovi fan. Like Curlio, they could have taken longer on the awesomness of them. Jon is exteamly sexy and after being on a field trip with 150 4th graders all day, I needed some sexy!
I agree with you on almost everything, Curlio. I thought tonight was really good considering how bad it could have been. My only disagreement is I really liked Blake's performance. He was probably my favorite tonight. It reminded me of a lot of the mixes I heard in the clubs in the 80's so I guess that is why I liked it. I liked his new look too.
Melinda was next...how awesome is she! Followed by Lakeshia. I am glad she is back. Then our man Phil. I thought it was his best performance as well. Rounded out by Chris, who if you didn't watch the devil eyes (only time I looked up and he looked possessed!) was not as bad as he has been. Poor Jordin bombed bad tonight. It was just way out of her league. I think her age showed tonight.
Who do I think should go home? Probably Phil and Chris
Who do I think will go home? Hmm I really am not sure. It is going to be a toss up since the scores from last week are also included. I'm thinking that it might be Phil and Lakeshia. I sure hope not because she deserves to be in the final 4!
If you can't be a good example, then be a horrible warning!
I agree Jordin didn't do too well this week. I don't think she'll get sent home though, cuz the the votes will include last weeks, and i thought she did pretty darn good last week. Phil has a nice tone but for some reason, he just bugs me. and chris? i keep hoping that one day, america will come to it's senses and realize what an annoying little brat he is. his voice was ok at the beginning but honestly, hearing the same tone week after week? Ugh.
Please, teenyboppers of america, tend to whatever illness you have that completely derives you of good taste in music. If american idol was based solely on singing and people everywhere could not see what the singer looks like, most of the people in the top ten will not have made it this far.

ick...now thats odd. george bush on american idol. ick. go back to ur killing of innocent ppl and contaminate us with ur ugliness. i wonder how much AI paid them to appear on the show.

do you know chris personally to call him a brat? they all have the same tone every week...talk about Melinda i know a ton of people who liked her in the beginning but are bored with her because you hear the same thing week after week after week. Chris has a good voice for his genre.
disappointed in Jordin this week and thought Lakisha did much better than she has in weeks
since there were 70 million votes last week I think Jordin will stay around (she was terrific last week) and chris and lakisha will say farewell
Liked the review but wouldn't give Blake that many points , he's a really good performance artist but the boy just isn't a singer, I'll give him props for doing hisown thing but he didn't do well with this song, he tried to put too much "stuff' into it to cover the fact that he can't just belt it out and really sing. I would have put him lower in the rankins, he needs to go home.
I thought this was the best night for AI6. I thought they all had decent performances with Blake as the stand-out. His performance is memorable and will be talked about a lot tomorrow. Good performance for Phil as well. However, I am really proud of my gal, LaKisha. I know this was most likely her last performance, but at least, she is going out on a high note. Good for her!!!!
I don't have much to add tonight. I agreed with everything Queen Curlio said except that I agree with our Beanstalker, I liked Blake's performance better than just as 5. I would have given it a 7, maybe a 7.5.
Gosh, it was nice to see LaKisha's attitude and performance back. At least she may be leaving on a high note.
I hope to see Phil and Chris go home.
I expect to see LaKisha and Chris go home.
1. phil was the stand out. loved his voice and i thought his delivery was amazing. have no point of reference for simon’s critique. possibly a man pissing tree thing? maybe i am a bit carried away with his singing at the moment but i actually think that i would buy his cd.
2/3. lakisha & melinda. it must be a cold day in _ cause melinda is back on my fav list. she was fantastic. it seems to me that every since simon told her to loose the ‘shucks little me shy girl’ act she has gotten more and more…well….real. i like real melinda. she has all sorts of power. lakisha slapped ghetto soul all up and down that song. loved her.
snooze worthy – blake. what was that? have to agree with curlio on this one. one way or the other. straight rock and roll would have come off karaoke. straight beat box blah blah would or could have been interesting. disappointed. disappointing.
chris – i actually thought that ryan referring to him as jt was unnecessary. otherwise i think it is time for chris to go home.
absolute bottom of the pile this week – jordin. difficult to say but that was terrible. i would have forgiven some of it but didn’t she actually pick that song? given melinda and lakisha’s selections i have little sympathy for jordin’s poor performance.
who else besides chris is going home tonight? i do not have a guess. who should not go home tonight? phil.
Poor miss Jordin
pudding and pie .
Sang some rock
and made me cry !!!
Little miss sunshine
Melinda the great !!!
If she were playing chess ,
them contestants are CHECK - MATE !!!
Lakisha Lakisha
she may be fat !!!
But would I hear her again ?
On the drop of a hat !!!!
Chris and Blake ,
oh both SOOOOOOO BAD !!
Chris and Blake ,
BOY ARE THEY SAD !!!
Phil the rocker !
I think not !
Was Phil good ?
Well ...... he was HOT !!!!
All hail the President
he's got a speech !!!
"Thank u and pro - WAR fellas ! "
What a leech !
( sorry guys for that disrespectful stanza , but I don't like Bush ! Period ! )
Overall rock-week had it's charm !
With some "yuck" and some "wow" !!
Next year , they should have hip-hop week !!
With none other than Li'l BOW- WOW !!!
(lol !!!!! )
So now I can write my little saga on the ongoing AI finalists .
Phil - I liked his VOICE , but I hated his ANNOYING personality. Did anyone see what he did in the end ? He was like , " WHOO !!! I'M BOWING TO U GUYS !!! WHOO !!! I NEED THOSE VOTES !!! WHOO !!! GIMME THE VOTES !!! WHOO WHOO !!! " ............ disgusting.
Blake- O.K PEOPLE !!! SINCE WE ALL BASED THE FINALISTS ON THEIR VOICE , JUST LIKE U DID TO SANJAYA, I'M GONNA BASE MY OPINION ON BLAKE'S VOICE AS WELL !!! HE HAS A VERY AVERAGE , HIGH PITCHED , CUTESY VOICE !!! The only good news is i think I saw his teeth again . The beat -boxing was nice ( to an extent )............... but that's it !!!!!!!!!!!!
Chris - TWO WORDS PAL ! "$#@#$ OFF" !!!
Lakisha - WHY COULDN'T U SING LIKE THIS LAST WEEK !!! NOW U ARE MOST PROBABLY GONNA BE GOING !!! WAH !!!! WAH !!!! WAH !!!!!
Melinda - Great Great Great Great Great !!!!
Jordin - Man , for someone who was brought up on Jon Bon Jovi , she probably made him commit suicide !!! And that bubbly , " I sucked people ! SO vote for me !!! " attitude did not work !!!! Yuck !!!! MAN SHE IS ONE WIERD GIRL !!!! AND THAT HAIR STYLE !!! HONEY LEAVE HAIR STYLES WITH SANJAYA !!! U CAN'T PULL IT OFF !!!
So overall ................. a pretty good show !!! Lots to talk about , people to dis badly , great performances by the divas ......... and to an extent Phil ( and Blake .... ).
So the show goes on .......
OH CURLIO OR SPROUT OR WILL OR SHENOVA , WAS THAT JAMIE LEE CURTIS IN THE AUDIANCE ? COULD NOT MAKE OUT !!!! And Antonella and GINA GLOCKSEN were in the audiance as well !!! Whoo - hoo !!
Oh and Bush sux !!!!
Big time !!!!!
Thank GAWD election time is coming very very soon !!!! Hopefully people will not vote for war-mongerers like HIM !!!!
However , it was kinda nice that he atleast had the decency to thank everyone for their generous contributions. U ALL SHOULD BE VERY PROUD OF URSELVES FOR HELPING OUT THE LESS FORTUNATE !!!! GO TEAM !!!
On the bright side for Chris ( for all those Chris lovers who hated what I had to say about him ) , I would not have given Chris an absolute 0 !!!! MAybe , 0.5 !!!! Now howz that ( LOL !!! ) !!!!
Guest said: I thought Blake as great. No one has done anything that original in all of the years on AL. I would buy that song tonight if it was released.
I think Michael Winslow did this same rendition in Police Academy 9: Assignment Star Search. Blake, once again, showed why he is a big phony with his butchering of a classic song. The kid is annoying and I dislike him as much as Curlio dislikes Chris R.
Based on last night, I am rooting for Melinda (of course), and Phil who has really come into his own the past few weeks. I think he will have enough votes to stay in the game and Chris R and Lakisha (unfortunately) will go home.
But Curlio ..... waz Jamie there as part of the audiance ?
Also , Phil looks WAY older than Jon. Boy , is he well maintained !!!
Oh and GUEST after Angelinaks , there is a BIG difference between BEING ORIGINAL and being GUD !!!
Blake's originals tend to suck vocally. Now, we all know that the people don't want someone who " can sing and beat - box " , we , the people , want someone who can WOW us , mostly vocally , and performance wise !!!
So alas , Blake was a tad bad this week. But DON'T WORRY HE WILL NOT WIN THE COMPETITION AND WILL NOT BE GOING THIS WEEK !!!! UNLESS THE STARS SAY IT MY WAY !!!!!!! HEHEHE !!!!!!
What is up with Simon and Phil? Phil started the show lasyt night and was very good; Simon's comment (not knowing how the others would perform) was he didn't think it was good enough for him to survive. Jeezz. Cut the guy some slack Simon, since country week the guy has been competitive. Talk about trying to manipulate the votes!!
Rock is not my my cup of tea, but I was pleasntly surprised by the standard of last night's show. Melinda has solidified herself as the firm favorite. For all of those who claim she can only sing one genre, is boring and all other unrelated comments, please stop. I have said it before: The girl can sing just about anything. I can't recall any contestant on any season of AI who has been this consistent from week to week.
I loved Blake's performance. Simon was right, half of the viewrs probably hated it; but count me in the other half who loved it. He has to be credited for doing something different, while at the same time hiding the limitations of his voice.
Lakisha was great, but I wonder if it is too little too late. Jordin was out of her league, and I think she may be in trouble. I thought she was overpraised last week, and undoubtly had the worst performance last night.
Chris has to go, bad last week and worse this week.
Top four form last night in any order: Phil, Blake Melinda and Lakisha.
Bottom two: Chris and Jordin.
Bottom three combining the two performances: Chris, Jordin and Lakisha.
