Indian Idol 3 - Curtain Raiser Sprout
 2007-05-04 14:48:10
Television So It Begins…

After a long wait and a lot of anticipation, the Third Season of Indian Idol kick started with numerous changes. So let’s get on with the Curtain Raiser!

This is Indian Idol 3!

Mini Mathur is back as the host and she is looking quite nice. In voiceover Mini informs us how awesome Indian Idol has been in the past. Introducing Abhijeet Sawant – the first Indian Idol and Sandeep Acharya – winner of Indian Idol 2!

Joining Mini as the host is the ever cute actor Hussain! He is no stranger to Reality Shows having won Nach Baliye 2 last year with his cuter wife Tina! Hussain is awesome addition to the show!

This year, Indian Idol went looking for Idol wannabes in 12 places and even went to London and Dubai – broadening the scope even more.

Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan left Indian Idol as judges and three new judges joined Annu Malek (yes, it’s spelled like that now) this season! Annu Malek is one of the music directors of India and a veteran as far as Indian Idol goes.

Presenting Alisha Chinai – India’s answer to Madonna… Alisha has had a very interesting career. She was the first Indi-Pop artiste of India and made a huge mark in India selling her non-film albums in record numbers. Off-late she is known for her work in film music especially the very popular “Kajra Re”!

Joining Alisha and Annu is Udit Narayan – the very popular playback singer of India, who is known for his very soothing voice. He became a hit as the voice of Aamir Khan with the film “Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak” and has gone on to be the voice of all romantic leads since then. Last year’s winner was greatly influenced by Udit Narayan!

And with them is arguably the very best lyricist, writer Javed Akhtar Saab! Javed Saab’s inclusion is a very welcome sign because he is the voice of reason and experience. It would be interesting to note that Javed Saab started out as a film-writer with his friend and partner Salim Khan and they have an impressive number of hits under their belt but they might be best known for their film ‘Sholay’. Javed Saab started his career as a lyricist with the film ‘Silsila’, Soundtrack of which is still extremely popular with Indians and has never looked back!

Capital of India, New Delhi was the first audition city featured in the CurtainRaiser. Idol wannabes flocked at the place a day before and we saw numerous clips – good and bad - of singing as they waited. Finally, we saw the great big crowd get in the gates and thus started the audition process of Indian Idol 3!

First in line was Shubhangi Tewari

Shubhangi was an interesting candidate, cute and weird at the same time. She had really beautiful eyes. She performed a vocal exercise before she went in, prompting Mini to wonder if she had lost it. Shubhangi went in and started singing “Mantra” by Euphoria. It was interesting, because it was great in some parts and not so great in other. But her voice was different and rather refreshing. Annu was enamoured. Javed Saab was not so sure. Udit agreed with Javed Saab verdict and thus prompting Annu to start the first argument of the season. Annu blamed Udit that he did not speak his mind and just followed Javed Saab’s thoughts. Alisha, however did not agree with Annu and hence Shubhangi who claimed that her voice was affected due nasal blockage was the first person to hear a NO! This prompted Annu to state that the other three made a mistake!

Next came Sreeju Premrajan

Sreeju was greeted by Udit as Udit sang a tune in Malayalam – Sreeju’s mother-tongue. Sreeju strummed his guitar and sang. Annu asked him to sing without his guitar and Sreeju sang “Jab Koi Baat” to which Annu said that Sreeju was imperfect singer and his imperfection made him perfect in his eyes. Udit, who had a little problem with Sreeju’s inability with giving the right weight-age to the words, also gave Sreeju a nod of yes. So did Alisha and Javed Saab. And Sreeju was the first person to receive the Golden Ticket!

Then came Amit Sharma from Punjab

Amit sang “Mitwa” and Annu asked Javed Saab to write impromptu lyrics and composed a tune, which Udit sang – just to see if Amit can sing new songs on the fly and he did a decent job and got the affirmative vote from two judges and negative from two, who thought he still needed more training, but since Annu had the veto vote – his yes made sure Amit went through.

Next we saw a collage of weird people wanting to be an Indian Idol – funny and indescribable!

What happened next was also awesomely funny – Enter Ravi Jindal wearing a beret prompting Alisha to say he was exactly what they were looking for. Too bad, she had yet to hear him sing! Ravi, the Beret started singing, “Tujhe Dekha To” and it just took first few words before everyone were laughing their heads off. Ravi had his eyes closed the whole time and Annu walked right behind him and imitated him much to the other’s delight. I must say Annu was funny – Ravi obviously got a NO!

Next we saw a medley of people singing; “Barso Re” with a disc-man and it was awesomely awful and darn funny!

Thus bringing in another disaster Jaspreet Singh, who claimed that the night guards at his hostel claim that when he sings he creates noise pollution. And then he demonstrated how! Oy! However, I agree with Javed Saab that knowing Indi-Pop scene these days – if he made a record and a video, he might be a hit. And we saw a lame *video – that was not really funny! But the Jugalbandi of Annu and some woman laughing like crazy was! Ask Alisha, she could not stop laughing!

We saw a montage of really bad singing juxtaposed with the pained faces of the judges.

Then came Sameer Soni, who was in the news for what happened next… the guy came bearing gifts for the judges and then said he would only give the gifts if he is selected and Javed Saab taunted him that this showed how progressive the country has become that a person is offering a bribe on television! Ouch!

Anyway, so Sameer starts singing “Happy Birthday” to Alisha in such an awful way that it is beyond me how anyone can mess that up! I guess it must be her birthday, not really sure. Then he reveals that he is her biggest fan since 1985 – that means since he was four! He gifts her teddy and gives her a cake and a tiara, which she sportingly wears and when he starts getting emotionally sappy after singing awfully, she requests him not to do that. He states that she should remember he is her biggest fan and when she makes a list (as if) of her fans – he should be at the number one spot – she tells him he would occupy the top ten spots! She even sang for him when he said that meeting her meant he received everything in life! God, people like this really exist! To a point it was cute, but then it got really too much. Anyway, the dailies reported that this guy who verged on being a stalker literally freaked Alisha out to the point that she was actually scared till Annu told her that this was all in day’s work in Indian Idol!

I must give one thing to Sameer; he got the maximum amount of airtime for being a fan!

Next came – Ram Rastogi, who sang Manna Dey’s “Jhanak Jhanak Tori Baaje” and Annu told him that he was a prime candidate of why he should not be in Idol. It takes a lot to sing classical and to mess it up by using gimmicks should not be accepted and I am with Annu on this one. Ram left and came back and Annu was livid, but Alisha said he could sing again just to stop the drama and the thing was better than the first, but yet not really good! Alisha was perplexed and asked what happened in two minutes, as he sounded really different – it was because he was Shyam –Ram’s identical twin. Both twins then sang together. The judges thought they were entertaining, yet not right. Ram said that they were unfair to Shyam because he was better than him, yet was not chosen and said those who give years to classical music are not selected. I am sorry, I disagree, because those who dedicate years to classical music are not looking for shortcuts – they dedicate their life to the art and yet remain unsatisfied!

Next we saw the awesome city of Amritsar and saw the Golden Temple, which is really beautiful! Mini travelled there to find some candidates, this included trips to farms. From Amritsar came this gal called Richa Aneja – unfortunately, I could not note her age, but she seemed real young! She was a darling, very simple, unpretentious and really cute! Annu asked her why she wanted to be Indian Idol and she said so that she can be famous.

She started singing Alaap and you could actually see this wonder take over Alisha’s face. Then she sang, “Jiya Le Gayoji Mora Sanwariya” with great control over each harkats and beautifully rendering the Sargams. Annu asked her if she can sing something more current and she chose my favourite, “Beedi”, she was so awesome that I actually had tears in my eyes. So far no one really knew what the judges were thinking. So Annu gets up and goes totally serious, the way you sang and clucked. Richa was almost fighting her tears back at this point and Annu goes that he speaks on behalf of all the four judges when he says that she is selected for the next round. Richa was still dumbstruck and innocently asked what songs should she prepare for the next round! Such a sweet gal! She is the one to lookout for!

Indian Idol went to Srinagar this year and despite the terrorist warning that no one should participate on the show, some did audition. I don’t know if anyone from Kashmir made it through though. They did not show that!

But this led to a medley that showed different gals who came to audition and many of them were shown to be really confident – leading to Surodee Vora from Assam. She was so nervous that she was biting her nails and Hussain awesomely tried to make her feel comfortable. Surodee went in and sang “More Piya”, it was an ambitious choice as it had spoken words and in my view she was really good. However, Annu did not like her. Javed Saab on the other hand did. And since Javed Saab said yes, Annu was fired up and said that Javed Saab was making an emotional decision. Alisha also agreed that Surodee had great voice and Annu was even more peeved. And started instigating Udit to say NO, Udit was so uncomfortable that he said NO and hence Surodee had to leave.

We saw numerous rejections and numerous tears!

Anyway, many were chosen from New Delhi, including two identical twin gals, but we will have to wait to know them better in the future.

Thus fell the curtain on the first episode of Indian Idol 3!

Seriously, I think this season, we will see a lot of conflicts between the judges, because Annu believes that he is the only who knows what he is talking about! Get professional you guys! And Annu, I am sorry, you are no Simon Cowell!

Now, few things –

I wrote this to be as factual and did not add my venom (much) – should I go with this format or add my venom? Your call!

Oh and I am awe of Curlio for covering the audition episodes of American Idol, it is not that easy people!

Indian Idol is back and so is this Bitch! Let’s have fun!

Where are those mistresses...
Presenting Alisha Chinai – India’s answer to Madonna…
the evil dots... It's again one of those strange Britney-is-your-rolemodel Indian comparisons. The main rule: no cone-bra no madonna!

I don't think (although it's a big compliment)she even has to be compared to Madonna. I mean for starters she brought Milind Soman to the world. (The hot Indian guy in Made in Indian) and besides that she's huge in India she's huge in the Middle East/North Africa/ Eastern Europe and Former Persia. I know of at least 4 altered/covered Made in India's. Both the Indian as well as the Turkish version (Made in Turkiya) were grey-played.

Anyway, I defenitely prefer her over Farah Khan, I think she brings a bit of sweetness into the show.

How y'all feel about the rest of the judges? I'm actually glad that Sonu has left the building, he's such a Diva.

Javed, I like his no-nonsense attitude. Udit not sure. Annu Malek? Ah you know... it's not the end of the world he's the darkhorse on the panel and our next object of hatred!
God, people like this really exist! To a point it was cute, but then it got really too much. Anyway, the dailies reported that this guy who verged on being a stalker literally freaked Alisha out to the point that she was actually scared till Annu told her that this was all in day’s work in Indian Idol!
I felt freaked out! You know this was even freakier than last years letter written in blood!

From top-to-bottom...
But the Jugalbandi of Annu and some woman laughing like crazy was! Ask Alisha, she could not stop laughing
Does anyone remember that old series The Mahabharat? There was this rather interessting lady called Putna... You know the fugly babyslayer.

I swear this lovely gal laughs in the same manner.. I could not stop laughing!
I wrote this to be as factual and did not add my venom (much) – should I go with this format or add my venom? Your call!
Whatever feels natural, darling. I like your writings period. Just me thinking outload: What I found briljant about Deepa's Mehram review was that it both appeals to the cynic as well as the fans. I'm not good at dosing venom but I know you are so just be you and we will spin our heads around (a la Linda Blair) in utter joy!
Oh and I am awe of Curlio for covering the audition episodes of American Idol, it is not that easy people
Yes shout out to Dusty and Curlio for covering the shows. Storm or no storm!

And a shout out to you! Thanks for going to all the trouble for us, yet again! Don't wonder why you have a cult following, this is one of the many reasons why we love you!

Uttam said: I don't think (although it's a big compliment) she even has to be compared to Madonna. I mean for starters she brought Milind Soman to the world.
Oh honey, she has been compared to Madonna like crazy – So much so that she released an album called Madonna in 80s! See wiki! And as far as Milind goes, he is not alone. Alisha was paired up with numerous mainstream Indian male models of early 90s in her videos, which again was a trait Madonna used in her career – think Cameron in “Express Yourself”. Marc Robinson, Gautam Kapoor and of course, Milind Soman in the video of “Made In India”!
Uttam said: Anyway, I defenitely prefer her over Farah Khan, I think she brings a bit of sweetness into the show.
Yes, she is really sweet – I didn’t think she would be this sweet! I like her! I just hope that she doesn’t go Paula!
Uttam said: How y'all feel about the rest of the judges?
I love Javed Saab, Annu is well… an ass, Udit seems somewhat sane and Alisha is sweet but firm. I am happy! However, I read that Javed Saab recently ruffled Udit’s feathers by criticizing Udit’s son’s skills as a host of the new Zee’s show, which I think should be covered! Any volunteers? Anyway, Udit staged a walkout apparently!

Aw! So sweet! Thanks Uttam!

Actually, thanks to all of you, Dew, Deepa, Sree, Venkat, Padma, Shona, et al! I just wish you’d talk about what you liked and didn’t about the show, instead of me henceforth.

I love doing this because I know you all love music as much as I do! So I do want to know how y’all felt about the show as well! But flattery does help a lot! -oops-

By the by, who all loved Richa besides Venkat and me? Thanks Venkat for letting me know her age!

Oh and venom would come with a vengeance when the people start singing – right now I would try to be nasty, but being nasty without a reason also spells doom! If I see a chance, you bet I’d take it!

I am so happy that majority of you are fans of my caustic words! No wonder I am called a Bitch! LOL!

I agree that Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa has amazing talent. Was blown away by the gal from US – Mauli was her name, I think! However, I will literally go nuts if I cover both shows because they are back to back! If the shows would have been on different days, I might have considered, but with same days – it’s not possible! Hence, I wondered if anyone would volunteer – psst ask Uttam – she is a pro now!

By the by, where are you guys? I mean I sacrificed my sleep to post the article on the same night and not a single comment? What’s up? See the show, if you haven’t because there is enough to talk about. Don’t make this Fame X – the very thought of that makes me sad!

I am in US and the show is aired here at 9:00 PM EST. I saw your post but did not see the show by that time.

The girl from US was amazing. Couple of singers from Pakistan are also good. It looks like a very promising show. I am still not sure what the format is going to be, but it has potential to be great. While II3 is wasting time promoting the potty humor, they are already showcasing their talent.

Shree, where about in Mumbai are your roots?

It is rather strange that most Indians on this site are not in India. And I (the gora with Indian name) am reporting from India. (Talk about the irony!)

I tried roadside food few years back and I got violently ill, so I have not dared doing that again. Although, our cook makes all the roadside delicacies with utmost dedication and I am told by my friends that it is as good as the one on the road minus the germs. So next time I’ll have Pani-puri, I’ll eat two more, thinking about you!

Uttam, I am so amazed that the wordpress person said such sweet things. Whoever you are – Thank you! It was very kind of you!

And Uttam – Congratulations! You are officially promoted to the editorial circle!

Congratulations Uttam! Well-deserved and high time! High Five girl!

Sproutie - if you eat the pani puri off the roadside, just eat it without the pani. That's what makes people sick! Yes, I admit, it doesn't taste the same. Last time I went to India, we went to an indoor place to eat the pani puri because they used filtered water. My brother, however, was less careful. Let's just say the results weren't pretty. So if your cook doesn't wanna, hit up a restaurant in Mumbai. Also, I'm not sure where you are, but if you're in the Worli area, take a stroll by the waterside for me. I can't tell you how unashamedly jealous I am of you right now. Oh to be in India. *Sigh.

Sree - I would also love to know where in Mumbai you are from!

Right, Indian Idol. I loved Richa too. I hope she doesn't turn into an Antara though. Remember how everyone thought she was nice and sweet when she first came?
