Indian Idol 3 - Top 12 Perform in Final Piano Round Deepa
 2007-06-08 21:25:14
Television After YET ANOTHER heartbreaking elimination, where Bhavin Dhanak, Amit Paul, and Rehaan Khan were sent home, Indian Idol 3 kicked off its final piano round. The 12 remaining contestants performed and tomorrow, two will be sent home. The Top 10 will then continue to the gala rounds. And the show started with the One-Man Masti ki Paathshaala himself!

Emon Chatterjee – Bijuria

This guy always manages to bring a smile to my face. He sang beautifully, and he had just the perfect little facial expressions and hand movements. I guess you have to watch it to know what I’m talking about! As I mentioned during his last performance, he adds his own subtle touch to the songs and it works so well! Mini came on and called him Sonuji. Mini made him sing it again and do a cute little dance step from the original song. And yay for Mini for doing that! I loved it!

Javed Akhtar: It’s hard to sing such a high energy song but make sure to focus on the clarity of your words.
Alisha Chinai: Brilliant as usual but I want to see the first Emon, not a second Sonu Nigam in your singing.
Udit Narayan: Well sung!

Okay, after the judges gave their opinion, I got so wrapped up in what happened next that I forgot to keep typing! So I’m going back and writing it again. Anu Malik reacted to Emon’s imitation of him yesterday and he loved it! He playfully told Emon that he was going to cut him in half when he gets back. Emon, sharp as a tack, said, “If you cut me in half, there will be nothing left!” Poor, short Emon! :)

Then Mini asked the judges to give a one-word answer whether Emon would make it to the Top 5. Uditji said yes. Alisha said yes. Javedsaab said that there were so many good singers so it is hard to say. Mini replied that Javedsaab is not happy with Emon because of the imitation he did of Javedsaab yesterday. Javedsaab responded, “What can I do, this new generation is like that.” By this point, Emon looked petrified! He apologized. And then silence for a few seconds. Finally Javedsaab said, “Emon, you’re not the only one who likes to joke with people!” Hugh sigh of relief from Emon and as the audience cracked up! The expression of relief on his mom’s face was priceless. LOL.

Deepa’s rating: 8/10

Charu Semwal – Ruk Jaana Raat

This was a smart song choice because Charu usually performs fast numbers. Through this she had the chance to show that she could sing all types of songs. However, in my opinion, this performance was not up to the mark as her other ones because she seemed a little more mechanical. The judges thought differently.

Javedsaab: You have expressed the right mood of this song, which very few people do.
Uditji: You have sung with so much love but you slipped from sur slightly in the middle. However, this is such a difficult song that the little things can be overlooked.
Alisha: You sang this song beautifully and soulfully. This year, the boys’ performances are so brilliant that the girls have to buck up. I promised that this year, the Indian Idol will be a girl and you have to show them!

Deepa’s rating: 7/10

Smita Adhikari – It’s the Time to Disco

What a song choice! I actually think that Smita is finding her musical identity. Both times she performed peppy numbers, her performances stood out whereas when she performed slow numbers, she ended up in the bottom four.

Uditji: You set the stage on fire!
Alisha: You’re without a doubt a good singer. You have to work a little on your presence and confidence. Uditji interjected and told Smita that she should never think that she doesn’t have the right personality or the confidence. She should remove all negative thoughts from her head.
Javedsaab: (He agreed with me!) He said that your forte is slow, romantic numbers, but today, you have shown what kind of range you can have. You have proven that even if you sing out of your range, you can do it competently.

Mini then asked Smita about her father and Smita said that he couldn’t come because of his health but she wished that he could be there. Then of course, Mini brought both of her parents on the stage! Smita’s reaction was so genuine. The way she hugged Mini was so sweet.

Mini asked Smita’s dad how he felt about Smita performing. He said it felt wonderful and had Indian Idol not existed, his daughter would not have gotten the chance she is getting now. Mini requested that he and Smita sing a couple of lines together. They sang her father’s own composition. What a heartwarming moment!

Deepa’s rating: 7.5/10

Parleen Gill – Lamha Lamha

Okay, aside from his audition, this was without a doubt Parleen’s best performance. It’s such a soothing song, and he sang it well.

Javedsaab: (This is the second time he’s agreed with me!) Well done! The way you were when we first saw you is the way you now are again.
Alisha: It’s important in this competition that you perform well every time and you do that. Congratulations.
Uditji: Stood up and greeted him! When you sing, I keep looking at you. What a lovely personality. But you have to keep this up!

Deepa’s rating: 8/10

Deepali – Dheeme Dheeme Gaaon

I haven’t heard this song in a long time so to hear Deepali sing it was refreshing! She sang it beautifully, as expected. She reminds me a lot of Meenal Jain from the last season, and Meenal was my favorite contestant! She’s such a straight shooter with no added drama.

Alisha: she has a sweet voice but she could try and spice it up a bit.
Uditji: Don’t take the competition easy. Pay close attention to your singing.
Javedsaab: Today’s professional singers sing one line at a time in the recording studio. In this song, it is difficult to find places to take a breath. So to control your breath and sing with the right volume is commendable. The few places that you made mistakes are easily overlooked, especially because you picked a song that not many people pick these days.

Mini asked Deepali whether it was true that she wanted to become an RJ. Deepali said it was and Mini put her to the test. She pretended to be an RJ and interviewed Mini. Well, Deepali’s right about one thing. She would make a good RJ!

Deepa’s rating: 8/10

Suhit Gosain – Sayonee

This song suits Suhit well, but he was off tempo and out of tune in a lot of places! Maybe it’s because he had to sing it faster than normal, but still, it was not good at all. Yep. Our future Indian Idol.

Javedsaab: Better than yesterday but you went off-key in the middle.
Alisha: Thank God you’re safe but you need to work very hard, you know that. You’re an electrifying performer
Uditji: I enjoyed your performance today.

Deepa’s rating: 4/10

Abhishek Kumar – Ab Mujhe Raat Din

What a welcome change after Suhit! Abhishek was almost flawless. I even put on my headphones and listened to it closely. And it was so different from the upbeat song he did yesterday! Well done, Abhishek.

Alisha: You sang with a lot of feeling.
Javedsaab: Welcome to the gala!

Uditji first asked Abhishek whether he sang in on the same scale as the original, or a different scale. Abhishek said it’s a half note lower than the original. Uditji took issue with this, saying that Abhishek could have easily done the original scale. Abhishek said he was scared to do it because he might not have been able to. Alisha appreciated that he sang in the lower scale because it made is voice husky. Uditji asked Abhishek to sing it on the higher scale, which he did. Javedsaab, and I, thought that the higher scale was better. Uditji was spot on with his evaluation.

Mini said that Abhishek is quite a good dancer and asked Uditji to sing a few lines so he could dance. Uditji picked the worst possible song for Abhishek to dance to but the audience got the point. This guy can shake a leg if the music is right! I hope he survives long enough to show us this.

Deepa’s rating: 9/10

Prashant Tamang – Kehna Hai

Ab to yeh banda tike rahega. He’s so versatile and sings each song so effortlessly. He did this one well too but it was missing the energy that he had in past performances.

Javedsaab: Well done. You sang the song really well on the whole.
Alisha: This is definitely a better performance. It was good, but I still think that you go out of tune at times.
Uditji: You were good yesterday, and you were good today. I want to see something else from you.

Mini asked the judges why they don’t have the same enthusiasm for Prashant that we as the audience do. That’s a great question to ask. They didn’t really give an answer to it but said some stuff that didn’t mean a thing.

The other big news: Prashant gave his first live interview yesterday! Good for you buddy! ☺

Deepa’s rating: 7.5/10

Puja Chatterjee – Sajna Aa Bhi Jaa

Puja was also flawless! She picked a fitting song, and I love how this girl gets out there and channels all her energy on the notes that are coming out of her mouth. She is so focused on her singing that sometimes she forgets to perform! But no matter, she’s really good.

Alisha: What a powerhouse of talent. She did more than justice to it.
Uditji: I have always liked Puja and I think that she will fulfill my dreams for her. I will pray for Puja because she sings well and has what it takes to be Indian Idol.
Javedsaab: I think that her performance today was the weakest of all of them. It was missing the flow from one note to another, which is usually there.

Deepa’s rating: 9/10

Meiyang Chang – Dil Keh Raha Hai

The original song is a little softer than how Chang sang it. His interpretation was good, but I wish I didn’t have the original in my head to keep comparing it to. Regardless, I’m a fan of this guy, and if I were in India, he’d get a barrage of votes from me.

Alisha: You sang it with the right mood and well done!
Javedsaab: I prefer slower songs on you but you sang this one quite competently.
Uditji: You sang it well and from the heart.

Mini asked Chang to sing something in Chinese and he said that he only knows one line. He said it, and it translates into “I don’t know Chinese!” LOL. This guy really is 100% Made in India!

Deepa’s rating: 8.5/10

Richa Aneja – Piya Tohse Naina Laage Re

This song reminds me of Monali Thakur from Indian Idol 2, who sang it during the gala. Somehow, I wasn’t that impressed with this performance of Richa. She still sounds too raw and has to give her voice the chance to mature before she sings it. She was technically on point, but a different song choice would have been better.

Javedsaab: (Third time during this show that he and I had the same opinion!) It’s so difficult to say anything. Her voice has not matured enough to sing this song.
Alisha: I think that she still has the immaturity and rawness in her voice and she is not being serious (wrong Alisha, she is being serious)
Uditji: Don’t cry and get upset. In the upcoming years, you are going to succeed. You have the right voice and feel, but you are just young.

Deepa’s rating: 7.5/10

Ankita Mishra – Aisa Jadoo

The perfect way to end this round. She went off sur in one obvious place and clearly has trouble hitting the low notes, but we all know that she is a performer. It’s kind of like Panna Gill last year, who always had a creative performance even if his singing wasn’t perfect.

Alisha: Her performance is always mind-blowing, but her pitch is always going flat. She must choose another style.
Javedsaab: I liked her singing and performance. I have no complaints. She might have been flat but it was nothing that can’t be controlled
Uditji: He said the same thing I did, that she fell short on the low notes.

Mini asked her what she thinks the problem is. Ankita said she is trying. Mini responded a person can only try when they know what the problem is. So Ankita said that she goes out of sur. Uditji chimed in and said the problem is that she is getting too nervous about the results.

Deepa’s rating: 7.5/10

So overall, it was a pretty decent piano round but definitely not the best.

My top choices:
Emon
Abhishek
Meiyang
Puja

My middle of the pack:
Deepali
Parleen
Prashant
Smita
Charu

My bottom choices:
Suhit
Ankita
Richa

Let’s see what happens tomorrow. I’m pretty sure that the people I put at the bottom won’t be 100% correct, but I hope tomorrow’s result at least makes sense. But with the current track record, who know?! And plus, I’m pinning my hopes on Suhit winning, remember?

yeah 18 should be cut off, just so these contestants get a little time to mature as individuals before they come on this show. I don't think a year would make any difference to their ambitions, unless they are dying to be a one hit wonder! Any case, I also feel psychologically they will be more prepared to deal with a high intense contest of this kind if they come at 18 rather than at 16 or 17. Most of the kids look like they just got out of school, so it is really hard to be harsh with them...having said that, these are our prospective Indian Idols!!

Looking forward to hearing Parleen and Chang sing in these upcoming rounds. And no, I don't really care for Emon because we already have a Sonu Nigam in this world, and I was never a huge fan of the original anyway : P. Anyone know what the upcoming schedule is like? When do the galas actually start and such?

Alisha has also developed dislike for Prashant. She's never even once said a nice thing about his singing while showering befuddling praises on that loser Suhit. He went out like a loser too!

Hi

I am posting for the first time. I could overcome my inertia bcoz some of the views expressed in this forum are eerily similar to mine. For instance - my absolute hatred of Suhit's singing capabilities and moreso Alisha (to a lesser extent Anu's) fascination for him, the consistent biased approach of Alisha (for Richa and Suhit and against Smitha and Prashant). OK. I admit that there is no coincidence here. A lot of them must have hated that. But someone specified six contestants who should make it and my list was the exact same.

On an aside, I love Javed and Udit's opinions. More Javed's but Udit also because both of them are objective and pretty technical. I do not understand how someone even with a modicum of music sense supports Suhit's skills. In fact I feel bad that no one other than Javed harshly criticizes Suhit's skills. I hated Rehaan and even then Alisha supported him. It became violently crazy when Alisha says Prashant and Suhit are the weaker links and when it comes to choosing between Suhit and Abhishek, she chooses Suhit.!!!!?? Anyways, he is out for now and I hope these stupid people dont get him back.

I liked Smitha's voice from the day I heard her short clip at the audition. Though once in a while she slips from that standard, she is pretty good not the best though). It pains to see that Alisha is biased against her and knowing Alisha, she will never go back on her opinion.

Anyways, sorry for the rant.

My fav from girls - Dipali, then Puja or Smitha
From Guys - Abhishek, then Chang or Emon

Hope to stay interested.

ANkita - A (The thing with Ankita is that you either love what she does or don't, there's no middle ground as such. I think she's the best female in this competition. Even if she's not the best singer, I think she's probably more aware of where she wants to be, she is someone for whom singing is more than just sur and taal, in fact, she is really an artist, and I wouldn't be surprised if she's a good songwriter 'cos while she might not be trained, and technically sound, she breathes music and her passion is obvious in everyone of her performances. Music is a medium of expression for her more than anyother contestant in this competition.)
Oooh I agree! Her singing isn't quite what I like in singing. But I've completely fallen for her uberdorkiness. I keep thinking of her as if she were one of those braceface-like underdog cartoon characters.

Also.. The stylists were very very cruel to her I just can't believe the way they dressed her. Anyway, overall I think she was a good sport especially after watching Suhit's ouster. Talking about Suhit... The loser dance? He sure does practice what he preaches..

Oh and register Qizilbash.. it's so much easier to post (really - no code, edit option, totally free, handy tools, avatar option etc. etc. )

Plus I think you should post more! Loved every bit of it!

You know Smita keeps me busy. I think we haven't seen everything from her so I'm happy she's still in. But besides that don't y'all think that there is someting in her facial expression that portrays an (I'm not talking about the acne alright!) extreme sadness and sometimes anger. I think that even for Indian standards she's very emotinal.

Ah maybe I'm talking nonsense... again! She made It's the time to disco sound like a nice song and I applaud her for that because I really hated it.

Sure shot i agree with you on both counts. That gal Ankita really irritated me like anything during her audition......Remember her fall from grace.....Then it spiralled downwards from there.......But i think we sproutians have developed a soft corner for her from the time she cried onstage........And man did she blast when she was eliminated......

Suhit....That was a bad thing to do man.....I am sure if he thought that there was a chance of coming back then he would have appeased the judges.....Man what a sore loser......That made Ankita stand out a lot motre than it should have.....
