Indian Idol 3 - Top 11 Advance to the Finals

On Friday night, the Indian Idol Top 12 finalists performed. On Saturday, two were to be eliminated—one boy and one girl—to get to the Top 10. But wait, there were two twists. More on that later.

The show began with a small recap of the episodes so far. Hosts Hussein Kuwajerwala and Mini Mathur introduced the episode with their usual spunk and style.

Then came the first surprise of the evening—a performance by Jolly Das. Jolly made it through the piano rounds all the way to the finals last year when she came down with the chicken pox. At that time, she had missed three consecutive weeks and the judges would not allow her to continue competing, but they promised her a spot in the finals this year. So now, she picks up right where she left off. She performed Barso Re from the movie Guru. It was decent performance. I didn’t realize last year that she was so talented but just had a hard time showcasing it properly.

At this point, all the contestants were confused, as were the judges. No one knew why she was on the stage performing. They were giving each other blank looks. After her performance, Mini came on and introduced her to the judges and contestants. Her seat is reserved and the judges each got their chance to say something to her. Alisha Chinai started by welcoming her and saying that it wasn’t fair to this year’s contestants to let her in because they didn’t allow anyone else a second chance, no matter what the excuse.

Okay, my message to Alisha—you support Suhit blindly and he cannot sing. Thus, your opinion has stopped mattering to me. If ousted contestants can be brought back through the wildcard entry and given a second chance, then Jolly definitely deserves one. After all, she went through the process, albeit one year earlier. She got chosen to perform in the gala rounds by the people. Besides, she’s not the one who holds the cards and the ones who did last year decided she needed to be given another chance. This is reason number one that Alisha seems a little shallow and hypocritical.

Udit Narayan said that he’s really happy that the show gave her a chance to come back a second time because she is really talented. He said he would pray that she does well. Javed Akhtar welcomed her and said that she’s more senior than the rest of the contestants because she was a part of Indian Idol 2 and they have joined during Indian Idol 3. He told her that in the next couple of days, she’s going to be feel that she should have been a part of the show last year because the talent this year is better than last year.

We move on to the girls’ elimination. Hussein asked Ankita Mishra what she was feeling and by her answer, I could tell that she predicted she would be out. Usually when asked, she answers so confidently that the people have supported her. This time, she left it all up to God, but his is just my theory. Smita Adhikari answered that she would feel a lot of regret if she has to leave this stage.

So one by one, all the girls were called on stage, beginning with Charu Semwal, but Hussein said it in a way that got everyone scared. He said, “Charu, you will have to leave us now.” He left out the “…Mini is waiting for you on stage” part. This is the oldest trick in the book. Mini then called on Smita, Richa Aneja, Ankita, Deepali, and Puja Chatterjee.

So all the girls lined up on stage and the judges were asked who should be out. Javedsaab said Richa, not because she’s not a good singer, but because she’s a little too young for this competition. If she comes in two years, she will be a big hit. Alisha said she’s not judging based on looks, but Smita should be out. Okay, can I point out the obvious here? She said that Smita lacks in performance. That’s an indirect way of saying that if she were better looking, she would be more confident, and if she were more confidence, she would perform better. It all comes full circle anyways. Reason number two Alisha seems shallow and hypocritical. We will get to reason number three a little later on.

Uditji named Richa as well, even though she performed well throughout the show, save a few performances. Anu Malik predicted Richa as well.

And drumroll please…

Deepali is going to the finals.

Puja was told she would have to wait for her result.

Mini asked Charu and Richa that if they were asked to honestly answer who deserves to be in the Top 10, who would they pick between the two of them. Charu said that she obviously would say that she deserves it. Richa also said that Charu deserves to be there too. Okay, see what I mean about Richa’s attitude taking a complete turn? What a brave thing to say!

And the people decided that Richa would be moving on to the next round.

Charu is also moving on to the finals!

And then there were three: Puja, Ankita, and Smita

Smita’s in the finals! Yay!!!

Then it came down to Puja and Ankita. Of course, the person who moved to the finals was Puja and Ankita was eliminated.

And then Ankita did something that was spectacular. She went out with a bang. Mini asked her what she would like to say and Ankita replied, “I haven’t learned formal training, but I learned singing when I went to the temple from the guru there. Perhaps I didn’t utilize his training in the best way.” Hats off gal for keeping your head up.

Alisha said that she can’t leave without a song and she sang Mehbooba Mehbooba, during which Javedsaab came up on stage to dance with her. He ended by saying that he lost the bet that she could not make him dance, and Ankita won. So ends the journey of Ankita Mishra, who, during her time in Indian Idol, made all four judges dance to her songs. What an accomplishment! (*Here I will add that she is one of the six contestants on the list for the wildcard entry, so we’ll be seeing more of her next week! Whether she gets selected or not is up to the judges and the people.)

Then came the boys’ results. Hussein lined them up on stage and asked the judges who they thought would be out. Alisha thought that the ones that should definitely move on to the finals were Emon Chatterjee, Abhishek Kumar, Parleen Gill, and Meiyang Chang. So she thought Suhit Gosain and Prashant Tamang should be in the bottom. She couldn’t decide between the two because Suhit performs well but is not the best singer. YET, despite that, she chose Suhit to move on to the finals. Ewww!

Uditji and Javedsaab both chose Suhit. Javedsaab pointed out that two judges had also picked Richa but she was safe so there is no telling what the people have voted. Anu Malik thought that Parleen, Emon, Chang, Suhit, and Prashant should move on and Abhishek was a little off-key yesterday.

First, Hussein told Emon he was in! Then our little One-Man Masti ki Paathshaala literally climbed on top of Parleen, who was standing next to him! Amazing reaction! And bless his mom too! She was sitting in the audience, teary-eyed. Yay for Emon!

Prashant made it to the finals! His mom’s reaction was priceless! :)

Chang is also in the finals, family cheering him on and all!!

Parleen was in as well, after some cruel twist of the words by Hussein! And then it came down to Abhishek and Suhit. Both were nervously pacing but Abhishek clearly had his heart in his throat. He seriously thought he was going home.

Then Alisha was asked who she would save between Suhit and Abhishek, and she said Suhit. Reason number three she is shallow and hypocritical. A short while ago, she had called Abhishek flawless and put him at the near top of her list of the best contestants. Now she turns around and says the complete opposite. How dumb and irritating!

Well, Hussein ended the suspense and told Abhishek he was going to the finals. He literally fell to the ground, got up, and rushed over to his fellow contestants, ignoring Suhit completely. Alisha was in tears and asked Suhit to perform one last song. And this little brat said that he was in no condition to sing. What a poor sport! If we knew he was a brat from the Charu incident, this confirmed it. He’s too immature to handle this platform and definitely does not deserve to win.

However, he’s also participating in the wildcard entry round and there’s a really good chance that the judges (or the people) will bring him back. So I’m still keeping my previous stance on him: I dare the people of India to make him Indian Idol. He will single-handedly bring down a whole institution in the manner slightly reminiscent of Sanjaya Malakar from this year’s American Idol.

	Thanks for th reviews. Even when I can watch the episodes myself, I don't feel its complete without reading your say! That bit about Suhit not being the obvious choice for elimination was weird. I mean even we can hear that he is off-everything that it is possible to be off. I don't get about Alisha raving on about performance..what performance? As far as I can see, he always rolls up one legs of his jeans, wears T-shirts similar to what like what my son wears, stands like he is about run a race sideways; and launches into destroying the next song. Now someone like Abhishek has been showing variety in his movements. Don't tell me he is back in the wildcard entry :(((. Jolly didn't impress me that much, I have re-listened to her performance a couple of times and I just notice more and more mistakes. I think she is going to have hard time of it. I would have brought Dilpreet back from II2 (the one who was voted out by the discerning junta and really fainted)..okay, thats a half-joke but just to remind how many good people have been left behind. I definitely preferred Richa to Ankita (whose singing has been off the mark many times despite all that performance thing). As for the "bachpana", I just listened to her audition....it was there all the time and through all the earlier rounds where the judges were passing her on, so although I agree with Javed sahib that she may be outstanding in a couple of years, I am puzzled as to why this didn't come out before. Also, I think she was singing beautifully up to the point where she forgot her words. Since then she seems to be trying to please the judges, her coaches or whatever and lost something original in the process. I would have her go back to her earlier confidence in her singing. So for me voting was pretty satisfactory (if we ignore Bhavin or Aisha being voted out earlier) but now it seems that now that the Janta has finally done a good job of voting, Sony is going to give them to chance to go wrong again! Anyone know how the gala rounds work?

	I also find Alisha very irritating. She just has not got a clue about who she wants in or not. Stick to one opinion Alisha...PLEASE!!! Talent went out the window when Bhavin left and i think if the public have any idea about listening to a true artiste then Insha-allah Bhavin will definitely be back in

	I would love to see Bhavin and Aisha back in, those 2 are talented and deserve it. If not them, then atleast Amit, who is also very talented. If Suhit gets in, take my word for it, he will be there to stay and might make it right to the top. eeeew, i really cant see him as "Bharat ki Shaan".

	Alisha's response to some of the performances arenot justified. This is a singing competition and not a Mr or miss India where you are looking at a total package. Alisha has no judgement. Javed Akhtar is the saving grace with Udit also 'confused' at times. Awesome performances by Deepali, Prashant and Emon. .....ok Chang as well. Rest of the others ....dont deserve the title!

	One thing that makes me come back to this site after eery episode is to read MY reaction in others words. Birds of same feather. Alisha lost my respect (Not that it matters to her :). How can she pick Suhit over Prashant and Abhishek. And what is that great performance she keeps talking about. It looks like he is chopping wood. (I know I am stretching it a bit). But I havent seen one redeeming quality about him to keep him. At least in the case of others they left with grace and dignity. e.g. Bhavin, Amit, Shifa, Ankita, Alisha, Padmanav. I cant believe I am saying this but I really wish Anu is better and back on stage. I cant wait for him to cut down the contestants to size. Even though his judgement is not always perfect, he doesnt sugar coat his words like alisha and Udit. Javed is the only judge who speaks his mind. Now that my first prayer is answered (Suhit is out) now I will start praying that he is not back as wild card. And PLEASE dont compare Suhit to Sanjaya. Sanjaya was criticized by Randy/Simon and most of the media. He got booed by a full baseball stadium. He didnt lose his heart. He acknowledged he is not a great singer and he came on stage and did what he could and took all the insults with a smile. For a 17 year old he showed the strength of mind and confidence that most of the adults lack. Imaging suhit getting booed by 30000 people. He would probably start spewing profanities on National TV. Wait, he already did that. He will take it to the next level I guess.

	i feel all contestant are flat singers i meen they dont have energyleval to keep emotions which i felt by listening to origional songs, the origional songs sounds good and perfect, and presented with lots of energy and emotions even , origional singers kept the energy of instruments played in the songs but this contestants dont keep, and at the same time they lack proffetional values. they dont manage them self on the set.the person who will win will not make any name in the film industry as a playback singer,but he is only going to remain as an indian ideal and model for advertising deparment

	May I say something? Well, y’all are too slow, so I’ll take that as a yes! First, Bala, Welcome Aboard! And second, the thing is I know the judges will bring in Suhit, not because he’s a good singer or performer, on the contrary, they’ll bring him back, because he is not good! Frankly, do we really believe that Alisha is tone-deaf? Heck No! She knows Suhit isn’t all that, but the fact is by supporting him, she is in the news! Thank your lucky stars that Annu wasn’t around, or you’d have seen him fawning even worse as far as Suhit was concerned! Annu brought him in because Suhit wears that nail polish and proclaims to be a Rock Star, when in reality he is so not! Suhit is the comic relief, think back and you’ll see that Suhit has been a butt of a secret joke since the get-go! They have made him scream so many times that it was no longer funny! The way his fans are campaigning, I know in my heart that Suhit will make it to Top 13! And the producers would love that – Suhit is necessary for the votes! The Top 11 are respectable singers, where is the want to throw someone out? For that you need a bad singer! With Suhit, people will vote for others to win and Suhit’s fans will vote for him with madness, because in their heart they know that he is a bad singer! And like Anuj, his re-entry will pull a lot of upsets as really good singers would get the boot before him starting with Bhavin probably! Remember Amey’s exit last year? All the while, the producers would be laughing their behinds all the way to the bank! In the worst case scenario, Suhit wins the title, how would that be any different from Sandeep winning last year? I will tell you exactly how that would be different – Sandeep, like it or not, could at least sing in tune, all the while aping Udit! As far as Suhit is concerned, there is nothing redeeming about him, well, except some think that Qazi was a better singer than him! To compare Suhit to Sanjaya is fair and especially for me! I have been a Sanjaya apologist and I defended him citing choice of songs, and now Suhit’s fans are doing the same thing! Let me tell y’all, it ain’t pretty to be on the other side of the fence, because you realize how lame you really were! But I still maintain that Sanjaya was a good singer, just not right for AI! Talk about being a crazy weird fan! Speaking of which, last year, one guy was so pissed at me for my less than flattering comments about Sandeep that he proclaimed that he was sending substantial amount of money back home in India, so that his friends would only vote for Sandeep in his name! I don’t believe he did that in reality and if he did, he might be the biggest jackass I have ever known and because he did that just to spite me! Talk about giving too much importance! Anyway, my point is, without Suhit, how can this season be as good as last year? We need weird fans! Because how can you make fun of sensible people? Well, actually you can take lessons from Uttam about that, she can do that with great tact! Anyway, coming back to the topic, to all the weird fans, here’s the ultimate truth – Next year, no one will even remember Suhit Gosain, besides citing him as an example of a bad contestant! Moral of this lecture – this is not about who wins or who loses, this is about short term entertainment as far as the viewers are concerned and as far as the producers go – this is all about one thing and one thing only – MONEY!

	Deepa, thanks again for a nice review. I completely agree with Bala's argument. You shouldn't have brought Sanjaya into this argument at all. Just want to use one word for Suhit, this guy is 'weird' where as Sanjaya though not a good singer showed class. I had a very different opinion on Aisha before II2 started. But now I hate her more than I loved her songs. I am surprised that very few people talk about Amit but I think this guy deserves some attention as I noticed that he performs with an ease that most of the contestants lack. I thought he will stay longer. I hope he gets a wild card entry. Again it is just my opinion that I wanted to share with you all. 	thanks deepa. i would like to see bhavin as wild card. i love sanjaya. please do not compare him to anyone particularly with suhit as he has used bad language. i did not like alisha i thought farah was better

	heheh...my joy of the day and Indian Idol 3 hype will surge the most under two circumstances: 1) SUHIT WINS: Some people will be too embarassed to note they saw this show, and others will rejoice! 2) SMITA WINS: Defying Alisha's and Anu's ugly duckling comments, the girl shows herself to be the real swan--what a hearwarming story! Smita jaisi koi nahin, anyoneAm sure Ekta will welcome her with open arms. Richa winning might also be a big suprise, but there are those who feel she has redeemed herself somewhat and is not SUCH a bad singer, thanks to the presence of SUHIT As for the others, it was well deserved so obviously not as controversial!

	I find that the singers who are covered during the initial rounds tend to attract more votes.. It sometimes seems like the whole thing is preplanned. Sprout, i have been reading your coverage of II2 and II3 and am a huge fan :). Keep up the good work Deepa and I really hope a deserving candidate will win this time.

	i feel that there should be a better system for choosing the contestants. Even the format for Indian Idol is international, why can't they have judges-junta (50-50) collaboration. That way, if a contestant is completely unfairly eliminated or chosen, the judges have some say on the issue instead of apologizing and looking embarassed like sitting ducks!

	I am impressed with all the comments. Looks like everybody body is really looking at talent and not attitude (or anything else). Agreed, Alisha sort of lost it with Suhit and Suhit deserved to go because others are better singers than him.

Eh, I wish I could help you but only the almighty Dusty can bring the solutions to your problems. Try contacting again (unless your problem is already solved)

In the mean time I would suggest to give yourself a name instead of signing in as a guest. It's easier for the rest of the readers to keep all the people posting apart from each other.

It has been tried and it failed miserably. Some of you might remember Sa Re Ga Ma Pa lil' champs that started as a non-voting music show and even more recent (I'm starting to twitch my eyes) Fame-X chal udiye...

We all know now what a disaster that was!

Also, with Alisha, Mr. Malik and a 50-50 system most likely Suhit-didi would make it to the finals if not to the top-2

	Hey deepa i read your entries on the board and found interesting. In the wild card round i think Aiisha should be back for no doubt. And for guys i think bhavin deserves more. In my opnion top three finalist will be Puja, Charu and Prashant in this Indian Idol 3.

	ok, i might be opening up a huge debate here, but here goes:.... there is one thing i have to say abt smita, she has gotta get her 'personality' sorted. I'm not saying this coz i dont like her, infact i think she is amazingly talented and gifted. She has a beautiful voice and is definitely playback singer material. but my point here is that we have some really really good singers in the top 11 (excluding the peeps that will join in the wildcard entry thing) and these singers are also pretty good looking. Now knowing the indian public, based on previous voting styles, they do vote on looks. and i just feel that smita is going to get left behind if she doesnt get a good stylist and whatever else they need. to me an indian idol must be able to sing, perform and have a good "personality" as Uditji puts it. And those in the top 11 (except Richa and Jolly - only coz i havent seen her previous perfomances) can sing well and can perform well! anyways this is just my opinion, don't shoot me down!
