The theme for the night was none other than Himmesh Reshammiya!! I was really expecting super drama tonight but it turned out quite emotional at the end of the night. The show kicked off with Himmesh singing a song from his upcoming movie…perfect timing to promote his movie.
Host Aditya introduced the mentors Bappi da, Vishal-Shekhar, Ismail Darbar and the man of the evening Himmesh Reshammiya. The judges were music composers Rajesh Roshan and Khayyam saab.
Hit squad contestants started the evening with Junaid singing ‘Gustakh Dil’ from the movie ‘Dil maange more’. I know I have said this before too…Junaid is absolutely yummy. He sang really well and set the mood for the evening. Obviously, he was showered with praises from the mentors but he also got Ismail Darbar do a jig for this song. Ismail Darbar comes across as a very serious person generally and I was pretty shocked to see him dancing and having fun.
Saaberi sang ‘Meethi Meethi Batan’ from the movie ‘Aap ki khatir’. Her performance and singing was good, but after Junaid’s upbeat song this was a little let down for me. She got good comments from mentors.
Rajesh Roshan was reminded of Asha ji and Rafi saab after listening to Saaberi and Junaid respectively. Rajesh Roshan is such a sweet and humble person. I have noticed that whenever he thoroughly enjoys a performance, he thanks the contestants…wish everyone had that humility like him…..looking at HR. Khayyam saab as usual had good words for the contestants.
Next up was Yalgaar gharana’s Poonam. She is so tiny but she is a power house. She has got such a good throw in her voice; you can actually see that she is bringing her voice out all the way down from her stromach and not from her throat. Poonam sang ‘sanam mere humraaz’ from the movie ‘Humraaz’. Brijesh sang ‘Shab e firaq’ from the movie ‘Chup chup ke’. He sang alright but did falter a few places.
He was upset that he hasn’t been able to perform his best so far in the competition. Vishal and Himmesh pacified him saying that it was not all that bad as he thought. Himmesh demonstrated how to sing this song. Shekhar was happy that Poonam followed Asha ji’s advice and sang in aakar; he also liked the throw in her voice. Himmesh liked the attitude with which she sang this song. Bappi da too liked Poonam’s performance. Her mentor Ismail Darbar was amazed by the power with which she sings. Ismail shared Poonam’s past and said that she had lost her father even before she was born. Her mother has been sick for a few years now due to which Poonam was the earning member. All these hurdles that she has faced so far must be the reason for her powerful singing. He promised her that he will take care of her career. I was all teary eyed by this time. Poonam was extremely grateful to Ismail Darbar for bringing her to this stage. Rajesh Roshan felt that she does have the voice for being the next musical find.
Josh gharana’s Mauli Dave sang ‘Soniye’ from the movie Aksar. I felt she sang this song on a higher scale and it sounded as though she was screaming this song. Harpreet sang ‘Afreen tera chehra’ from the movie ‘Red’. Vishal felt Mauli has not performed as well as her very first performance in which she wowed everyone. He said Harpreet brought out the soul of the song. Ismail Darbar promised to work with Mauli soon. He liked Harpreet’s performance and felt his future would be bright. Himmesh felt both Mauli and Harpreet sang their songs in their own style and he liked that. Bappi da had the same opinion of Harpreet as Vishal. It seems he has already promised Mauli a playback career. From all the contestants, Mauli has grabbed the most opportunities from the mentors.
Khayyam saab was happy with the variation Mauli bough to this song and he felt that Harpreet had the Punjabi josh while singing. Rajesh Roshan felt Harpreet was weak on the first line, but overall he sang beautifully. He said Mauli sang this song on a higher scale…finally, somebody thought the way I did, but liked her performance nonetheless. He noted that generally performers from other countries have an accent when they sing, but in her case it was reverse.
The last gharana for the evening was Rock Gharana. Anita sang ‘Ishq mein dil ko ’ from the movie ‘Banaras - A Mystic Love Story’. She sang this song so beautifully that I kept wondering how come she has not been in my favorites list. Mussarat sang ‘Aap ki Kashish’ from the movie ‘Aashiq banaya aapne’. He dressed up like his mentor….cap, long jacket and all. I don’t like this composition at all, but he sang this song superbly. His finishing note was classic. One thing I didn’t like is when he was adding alaap in between the lines in the mukhda. I felt it was unnecessary.
Himmesh was happy with Mussarat’s performance and predicted that his songs will be a hit provided he gets songs that suit his tonal quality. Ismail Darbar and Bappi da also loved his performance. Vishal’s advice to Mussarat was that since high pitch singing was Mussarat’s style, he shouldn’t overuse his throat. Anita got praises from all the mentors for her singing and her tonal quality. Khayyam saab said Anita brought out the soul in the song. Rajesh Roshan said he bows his head to Mussarat’s teacher.
Signal time…
Poonam and Mussarat gets green signal which means they get a direct entry to the agnipareeksha. Mauli, Saaberi, Anita,Harpreet,Junaid and Brijesh gets yellow signal, so they will have to perform one more time to prove themselves.
The show ended with Himmesh’s father Bipin Reshammiya come on stage and share how proud he was of his son. Bipin ji himself is a well know music director for gujrathi films and he was the one who introduced synthesizer in bollywood music. It was a heart wrenching moment when Bipin ji said that he was shattered when he lost his other son, Himmesh’s older brother. But it was Himmesh who gave him the strength to live on. I loved Himmesh’s father and today for the first time my heart went out to Himmesh.
On that note, the show ended. Two will be eliminated in the next episode which Uttam will reveal.
I have stopped watching Sa re ga ma, thanks to the huge ego complexes and unnecessary showdowns between the gurus. Also, the talent in this show is not as good compared to Indian Idol. It pains me to see these singers repetedly getting music contracts for mediocre performances while Indian Idol 3 contestants are struggling to barely survive the competition. I wish the judges were reversed for the two shows..lols.
Dont worry... looking at the past SRGMP shows, i doubt any of them will make it really big. these mentors just promise things but have never really given any of the contestants any super hit song. look at HR, what has he done to vinit's career. and adesh... he hasn't helped himani that much either HR has instead. and ismail... he needs help with his own career first because he's unemployed and then maybe he can help others. i dunno about bappi and V-S. maybe they will keep their word. but only time will tell.
yeah... i feel bad for the Indian Idol contestants too.
I hate it when they bring up family background problems of the contestants. This surely changes the end result. Today the best female performer was Anita, Poonam should be second, but yet Poonam got the green light. Lets hope for the best tomorrow for Anita
As for the males, I feel Brijesh did not do well compare to the other male contestant.
