First and foremost, I must apologize for there not being a review last week. Things in the Bean household got a little out of hand, but we are back this week with some great dancing.
Tonight’s show opened with each of the dancers "freestyling" as they are introduced. Then the top 9 girls danced in a group followed by the top 9 guys. It reminded me of something out of “West Side Story” with both groups trying to look tough. Cat Deely came out and introduced our judges for this evening. Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe were joined this week by Mia Michaels.
After the judges chatted about Ricky leaving last week (Hey, what about Ashlee?), Cat informed us that each of the dancers were going to tell us who or what inspired them to dance. Lauren and Neil were announced as the first couple dancing. Lauren was made to do something girly since she was such a tomboy, so she tried dance and loved it. Neil wanted to spend more time with his preschool buddy, Megan, so he started taking dance with her. Dave Scott choreographed a Hip Hop routine to “The Way I Are” by Timberland featuring Keri Hilson. It was cute, but seemed kinda safe to me. I thought Neil was either behind Lauren a little or she was ahead of him, but obviously I don’t know anything because the judges thought Neil was fabulous! Nigel felt they had raised the bar for those dancing outside of what they are use to.
Next up was Pasha, who was inspired by the ballroom dance competitions as a child and Jessi, who likes the fact that dance is a celebratory art form. Tyce DiOrio choreographed a Jazz routine to “Stiff Jazz” by dZihan and Kamien. The routine had an African feel to it and it was suppose to be something about birds, which I didn’t get, but it was quirky and I liked it! This time the judges agreed with me!
Jean-Marc Genereux choreographed a Samba for Hok and Jamie. Jamie’s big sister inspired her to dance while Hok was inspired by the feeling a Japanese dancer gave him when he was a child. He wants to give that same feeling to others. They danced to “Bang Bang to the Rock N Roll" by Gabin. I thought it was really good. I was afraid Hok would not be able to handle a ballroom dance since he a breakdancer, but he surprised me! The judges were split on this one. They all agreed that the performance was outstanding, but Mary and Nigel felt that the technique was all over the place.
Sabra and Dominic were in the bottom three last week so they had a lot to prove coming into the competition tonight. Sabra has only been dancing for 4 years, while the only reason Dominic got into breakdancing was to impress the ladies. Their contemporary routine was to “I’ll Stand By You” by the Pretenders and choreographed by Mandy Moore. The judges agreed with me and thought it was great. Although Mary called Sabra something that I had no clue what she was calling her, Nigel was impressed that Dominic had become so dedicated to the competition that he shaved his toes. (HUH?!)
The other bottom three couple last week were Faina and Cedric. Faina was pushed by her mom not to quit ballroom dancing while Cedric got into dance to stay out of trouble. Their dance, the foxtrot, was choreographed by Hunter Johnson. The routine was performed to Elvis and Ann-Margeret’s “You’re the Boss”. Although I thought Faina did a fine job, Cedric did look stiff. The sad thing is I like him and not her! The judges agreed that Faina was in her element while Cedric was awkward. Nigel predicted a bottom three again this week for this couple.
Lacey has been raised in a dancing family while Kameron was inspired to dance by his sister. Tyce Diorio choreographed a Broadway routine to the “Overture to All That Jazz” from Chicago. It was hot. These two have already got the chemistry going and they are going to be hard to beat. Mia didn’t see the pizzazz that she would like to from Kameron, but Mary and Nigel agreed with me.
Anya and Danny were the next couple that take the stage. Anya loved the sparkling costumes as a child, while Danny’s troubled childhood led him to his adoptive mom who had a dance studio. Hunter Johnson choreographed a gorgeous Viennise Waltz to “You and Me” by Lighthouse. It was absolutely beautiful; very romantic. Again the judges were right there with me with Nigel commenting that this was the best routine thus far tonight.
Next Shauna, who is inspired by people who can make dance their life, and Jimmy, who took dance as an arts credit in middle school and loved it, danced a Hip Hop/Stepping routine to “U Sexy Girl” by Fat Man Scoop featuring Elephant Man & Jabba. Dave Scott created an aggressive routine that was lots of fun to watch. Mary and Mia thought that Jimmy stood out more than Shauna, (me too) while Nigel thought Shauna had left behind the dance school mechanics.
The last couple to perform tonight was Sara and Jesus. Sara’s passion for breaking came 4 years ago when she went to a B boy jam and Jesus enjoys the ability to be free when you dance. Jean Marc Genereux created a Paso Doble that the couple performed to Queen’s “We Will Rock You” remix. It was passionate and strange all at the same time. The ladies thought Jesus was amazing and Sara was “eh”, but Nigel felt it was stylized and very out of the box.
After a review of the numbers we were treated to watching all the dancers' freestyle once again as the show went off.
Beanstalker’s Random thoughts:
I was completely impressed at how the break dancers have stepped up to the routines. Dominic, Hok and Sara have really done well with their partners as well as the routines that they have drawn. Sara did a great job dancing in those heels since this is something she is not use to.
I do think this is the best group of dancers that they have had on the show. There will be a good couple in the bottom three tomorrow night.
Has anyone noticed how Cat Deely plays with her fingernail when she has both hands holding the microphone?
My pick for the bottom three:
Faina and Cedric
Shauna and Jimmy
Lauren and Neil
My favorite tonight:
Anya and Danny

I agree with you on this one. This year has the best group of dancers since this show began. I've taped it and will be watching it tonight. And as last week I will be biting my nails in anticipation on the choice of who will be leaving. I wouldn't want to be a judge making that decision!
By the way, I'm really glad that you are covering this show. As much as I love AI, I love this show even more. Keep up the good work.
