Sa Re Ga Ma Pa – Semi finals begin

First of all my apologies for coming across really harsh on you all last time. It was extremely heartening to see that people do watch the show. I know that in comparison to Indian Idol the show is pretty boring and monotonous, but I think this show churns out talent and that’s what I like about it. And I think from now on the competition on this show will get stronger by the day. On that note let’s begin the show…

So far every week from the eight contestants, two contestants were selected for the final agnipareeksha rounds, two were eliminated from the show and the remaining 4 were retained for the chakravyuh round to prove themselves once again. Today begins the Chakravyuh round which is like a do or die situation for the participants because there will be six contestants competing and four will get eliminated in one shot. The chakravyuh round is one more step of eliminations before the finals begin. The 6 participants who have already received the golden ticket to the finals are
Sumedha from Josh gharana; Joy,Nirupama and Mussarat from Rock gharana, Apurva from Hit Squad and Poonam from Yalgaar gharana. The contestants for today’s chakravyuh round are Mauli, Shreshta, Sumana, Junaid, Harpreet and Wasi.

Aditya started the show by singing the song ‘Abhimanyu, chakravyuh mein phas gaya hain tu’. He then introduced us to the mentors of each gharana – Bappi da, Vishal, Shekhar, Himmesh Reshammiya and Ismail Darbar. Ismail came in dressed like a cool dude…very different from his traditional attire…wassup Ismail ji?

Today’s judge was the legendary composer Anand ji bhai from the duo Kalyanji –Anandji. Kalyanji Virji Shah and Anandji Virji Shah are brothers who hailed from Gujurat. Together they composed music and have had some of the top most songs of all singers under their kitty. They also had a knack of discovering and grooming new talent in the field of music. The list of talents include Alka Yagnik, Sadhana Sargam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan to name a few.They have also served innumerable charitable causes. Kalyan ji passed away in 2000. Anandji bhaistill continues his mission on music.

The competition starts with the boys..
Harpreet from Josh gharana sang ‘Yaar ko maine’ from the movie ‘Sheesha’. He sung this song with the right mood and good voice throw, but I didn’t like his song choice. Not that this is a bad composition or anything but when you are fighting for one spot with such tough competition, you need to pick a very strong song.

Junaid (my cup cake bonk bonk

!!) from Hit squad sang ‘Tanhayee’ from the movie ‘Dil chahta hain’. Now that’s what I call a song choice! And he did justice to the song.

Wasi from Yalgaar group sang ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ from the movie ‘Dil se’. Now, singing Sukhwinder’s songs can be an extreme strain on your throat because you really have to throw your voice and it will also be high pitched. Wasi’s rendition was good but I felt he could have opened up more with his voice, it was a little softer for a Sukhwinder song.

After these performances, one would be sent home and the remaining two will perform one more time before the final selection is done. Anandji bhai was in a dilemma for this selection process. Anandji bhai felt that Harpreet sung the song in a sad tone. He liked Junaid’s style, presentation and singing. Anandji bhai asked Ismail Darbar why he suggested ‘Chaiyya chaiyya’ for Wasi, because that was not a good song choice. Ismail Darbar defended Wasi by saying that Wasi sings Sukhwinder’s songs extremely well, but for some time Wasi’s health is not co-operating with him hence his rendition was not his best. Anandji bhai jokingly said that he should have been given a sad song like ‘Dukhi mann mere’. At the end, Wasi was sent home. He was sad to leave the show but was happy that he got good comments and he was happy with himself.

Next was Girls’ performance…
Sumana from Hit squad sang ‘Barso re’ from the movie ‘Guru’. Shreya Ghosal, the original singer of this song has an extremely sweet voice and when Sumana sang I felt this was not the right song her voice tone. There were times I felt like she was shouting, but may be it could be because I was comparing it to the original.

Srestha from Rock gharana sang ‘Lambi Judaai’ from the movie ‘Hero’. She brought back memories of Indian Idol two contestant Meenal Jain’s rendition of the same song. This song is one of my favorites and she sang it beautifully and with the right emotion.

Mauli from Josh gharana sang ‘K Sera Sera’ from the movie ‘Pukar’. Actually this was a very interesting choice. I don’t think I have heard this song much in singing shows like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa or Indian Idol. But Mauli is a performer and I think she does her best in fast numbers and saucy songs. That’s exactly what she did for this one too. She added the right touch to the song.

Anandji bhai liked Sumana’s voice quality. He felt Srestha’s low notes could have been better. He was impressed with Mauli’s Hindi and Gujrathi. Ok now, apdo gujju members would have been very happy to hear them converse in gujrati. Anandji bhai asked her how did she know hindi inspite of being in the US of A. She said she learnt Hindi when she stayed in Ahmedabad for 5 years. He then teasingly asked her if any of her boyfriends’ speak hindi, if not then she could teach them hindi.

Hearing this gujrati conversation our bengali babu Bappi da sang a few gujrati lines. He then looked at Himmesh Reshammiya and checked if he was singing it correctly. Yep, Himmesh is a gujrati too. Ismail Darbar was born and brought in Surat, Gujurat. Shekhar raised his hand and claimed to be a gujju too….wow so many gujjus!!

After all the fun it was time to pick a name for elimination and Anandji bhai was uncomfortable doing it. So he had Ismail Darbar announce the name. Sumana will be going home. She was grateful for getting this platform and she taking back with her all that she has learned on this show.

After one boy and one girl eliminated, it was the second round of the performances. The theme for this round was non-filmi songs. Harpreet selected ‘Maeeri’ from the album ‘Euphoria’. This was definitely a better song choice that his earlier one and he sang it nicely.

Junaid sang Roopkumar Rathod’s ‘Aisa koi zindagi se’ from the album ‘Vaada’. This was a nice song choice and it suited Junaid’s voice very well.

Up next were girls’ turn…Mauli sang ‘Ab ke sawan’ from Shubha Mudgal’s album ‘Ab ke sawan’. Mauli started the song with an arabic tune which made me think she was going to sing ‘Mayya Maryem’ again…..thank goodness it was not…too much of anything can be bad. This was a good song choice for her tonal quality.

Srestha sang Runa Laila’s ‘Dama dam mast kalander’. Srestha sang this song excellently.
Her control over her breath was very good.

It was time to select two people who will move on to the finals. Bappi da was ready for Anandji’s decision. Vishal, in a very subtle way, said that the decision should not be based on past performance or popularity but purely based on today’s performance. All this time the camera focused on Mauli. Needless to say he was referring to her. Himmesh loved Srestha’s performance. He never expected her to sing so well. He said Mauli’s voice complements other established singers’ voices. Ismail liked all the performances.

This one definitely would have been a tough one for Anandji. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in Anandji’s shoes right now. Junaid was selected over Harpreet as Anandji bhai felt he brought out more feel to the song. From the girls Srestha was eliminated. Mauli blew us away with her first performance and she has been always a performer. Srestha on the other had has never given any outstanding performance, but today she was completely in her elements. Purely based on today’s performance Srestha should have been the winner, though I must say it was extremely close. Also, Mauli is quite a favorite with the mentors, so even if she had to leave today she was sure to get some offers her way.

Shekhar was honest and said that he is a big fan of Mauli’s but today Srestha sang better than her. Anandji bhai said that if it was in his hands he would have retained all of them. On this Ismail darbar said that if that is the case then Wasi also should be bought back. Before anybody gets any more bright ideas, Shekhar looked at Ismail Darbar and said Anandji’s decision should be final. Anandji bhai was disturbed by seeing the eliminated contestants in tears. He justified his selection, but also had words of encouragement for them.

With that, at the end of the first chakravyuh round, Junaid and Mauli get their seats confirmed in the finals.

Random thoughts….
Judging for the chakravyuh round is extremely difficult… one because you have to sift and select from among good singers and second you have to select one out of three of them. I think having Asha ji at this stage along with Anand ji bhai would have helped. She was able to pick out the minutest flaws which we may not be able to catch. And I suggested her name along with Anandji bhai because one person’s decision alone can sometimes go wrong. I still do not agree with Sarika’s elimination be Asha ji.

Did anyone notice the rings that Srestha was wearing? It had ‘H’ and ‘R’ on them. Few weeks back I saw these rings on Mussarat’s fingers. Is Himmesh supplying all his students with these rings? Did he provide it to them as a good luck charm or is it just that he is that egotistical?

	Gr8 recap like always shree! Yh I agree wid u about the judges and the judgement! Its been 3 times now that Anadji bhai has been accused of a wrong judgement!.. Its not really nice to say nething like this to a legend u urself have invited to give a judgement so mayb dey shud have 2 people judging as then they cant really accuse someone! About the rings.. from the first episode.. every Rock Gharana contestant has been wearing it supplied by their stylists and watever other people there are! If you remember.. Yogi said he was given these and he has 2 give it back now bt he feels lucky to have belonged to HR's gharana... There are only 2 sets of these that are given to the contestants (the max number dat can perform in a episode) of the Rock gharana. Newayz.. a gr8 recap and ya i know sum ppl have been saying that HR didnt support shreshtha as he didnt stand up for her when all of da other judges were saying that da decision was wrong.. bt i think that he just didnt want to insult the mahaguru by saying anything against the judgement. Like Shekhar also sed dat da decision is final wen ID started getting ideas about getting wasi back.. so ppl jus chill as he doesnt want the bad for his gharana.. jus tryna maintain his dignity i guess as had he sed sumin else.. den there wud av been another controversy saying that the success has gone to his head as he now even questions a legend's judgement! Once again a very nice recap. It's amazing how you are able to go into so much details! My comments below:

You are absolutely right there Shree. When I saw the show of saturday and sunday I felt that compared to the talent in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007, the Indian Idol show is pretty weak. I could feel the flawlessness in the singing of each and every contestant and that too on such complex songs. It's just amazing to watch this show!

I also personally feel that Srestha should have been selected. There's no doubt that Mauli and Srestha were extremely close but Srestha had an edge over Mauli. Personally, I was quite disappointed with the decision.

You are right. If there was one more judge it might have been better. It's a little bit sad to see that the legends like Asha ji and Anandji can be wrong sometimes. Of course, they might have seen something from their vast experience which others have not....

	Okay, I think Junaid has hit the ceiling on the cuteness factor. He just can't go any higher. If he does, there will be women dropping dead all around world and we wouldn't want that. So, with that said, here are the rest of my thoughts on this episode. Junaid and Harpreet were sort of on the same level for me, and I would have been happy to see either one of them enter the next round (yes, I'm partial to Junaid, but singing-wise, they are both good.) But I think Anandjibhai made the right decision. Junaid seems like a lambi race ka ghoda. Also, you know when the four Pakistani contestants first got there, Wasi and Mussarrat were praised the most and Junaid and Sikander were told that they needed to work harder. Well, Sikander is gone, which is really sad, because he performed better than Mussarrat in the first round. And Junaid, who was told that Wasi is better than him, beat him out in this round. Talk about the tables being turned! And as for the girls, Mauli was so not the right choice. I can understand Sumana being eliminated the first time around, but Shreshta was definitely better than her this time. I agreed with whichever judge it was that said that this is the first time Shreshta's performed so well. I took notice and I think she out-sang Mauli. I'm not sure why Anandjibhai picked Mauli, unless he was told by the channel that she had to stay on or they'd lose viewership. I hope that's not the case because it would be quite sad. But anyways, Vishal and Shekhar's gharana got selected for Wildcard and they have to pick two. I'd really like to see the two girls, Sarika and Saberi, back in the game. They are both really good. I agree with you here…I feel this time Junaid’s song selection gave him an edge over Harpreet. Because Harpreet is also a good singer…remember his ‘Kyun chalti hain pawan’…he sang like a dream.

One thing is for sure, Mauli has already created a buzz among the music directors. I read in a leading daily newspaper that Mauli was invited over to Bappi da ‘s house for dinner with him and Neetu Singhth because apparently Neetu Singh is a fan of her her singing. I know Neetu Singh is not a music director, but what I am trying to say is that Mauli is definitely getting popular in the film industry circle. May be Anand ji bhai also must have come to the show with some impression in mind about her. I don’t think the channels might have had a say here...don’t you think if they tried that the other mentors (except Bappi da) would boycott the show?

	i like maulii and i think she is better than shrestha cuz she haf the x-factor..and the decision made was based on over all singing i guess..i mean we want a global singer who has dat edge over others!
