After paying tribute to their Film Idols, the 11 Finalists of Indian Idol 3, faced the Third Round of Elimination on the Saturday Night!
The show started with a recap of Friday Night’s Performances in Mini Mathur’s voice-over, Amit Paul and Deepali emerged as clear winners of the Third Gala as they received raving reviews from the judges! Meiyang Chang, Prashant Tamang and Charu Semwal apparently did not receive positive feedback; I thought that with the exception of Prashant, Chang and Charu did not exactly receive negative feedbacks, so I am a bit confused about this! Parleen Singh Gill was roasted for his performance; Annu Malek rated him as the weakest guy standing in the competition! After Emon Chatterjee performed and choked, Annu rated him as the worst performer of the night and that sparked a conflict between Shabana Azmi and Annu, Shabanaji had told Annu that he should not demoralize Emon, and Annu retorted that Emon demoralized him by singing so badly! Emon had not sung badly on any counts, but anyway… Mini wondered if these arguments would spell doom for Emon or would the home viewers’ decision snuff some other contestant’s dream in a shocking elimination!
This is Indian Idol 3 – Results Show!
Javed Akhtar Saab was back in the judge’s seat after his stint in US. Hussain told him that Shabanaji was an excellent guest judge and wondered if Javed Saab had seen the show on television and what he thought of Annu Malek’s criticism of Emon’s performance! Javed Saab said that he had indeed seen the show and as far as he knew, no other judge had praised Emon as much as Annu Malek had, and Annu had every right to be critical, because when one is loved by someone and when that someone has great expectations; one should expect severe reactions, if one goes wrong! Addressing Emon Javed Saab stated that though Emon sang in tune, the song selection did not do anything for him as Javed Saab thought that Emon sounded better in slow songs as his voice was extremely sensitive!
Mini wondered that if that meant that no one should perform, because there was no pleasing the judges! Javed Saab said one should know the distinction between a Performer Singing and Singer Performing! And one should always feel like a Singer is Performing and not the other way around!
Mini said that when it came to the matter of Emon’s Over Confidence, the best judges were his fellow contestants and they would be able to confirm if Emon indeed was a victim of Over Confidence!
Puja Chatterjee said that Emon was like her best friend and brother and they were extremely close and as far as she knew he never displayed over confidence but he did concentrate on the singing a lot! As Hussain said that’s a good thing!
Chang was asked next and Chang too said that he didn’t think that Emon was over confident!
Abhishek Kumar thought that on stage maybe Emon appeared more confident, but wasn’t over confident otherwise!
Amit was asked if he liked Emon’s last performance, to which he said that Emon could have performed better!
Then they showed a clip of local people outside the studio, and everyone thought that Annu was being harsh for no reasons and everyone supported Emon, all the while Annu had a smug grin on his face that I desperately wanted to whip out! Interestingly, the clip also focussed on Annu’s harsh comments and somewhere Emon’s mimicry must be playing a huge part in this equation as many have observed in the media and forums!
Anyway, after the clip, Annu was asked for a feedback and the smug man said that when Emon does not get the Indian Idol crown, he’d recall Annu’s criticism! Annu said that the junta would support Emon till someone else takes the crown! Here’s what I don’t get, isn’t the junta deciding? If Emon does get eliminated in the future, it won’t be because of Annu Malek, it will be because someone else was better! Then again who knows! Because the poll on Indian Idol 3 official site is a little scary!
Anyway, so the show progressed to actual elimination process…
First up was Emon and he was declared ‘Safe’! He was quite excited and that was understandable! I must say Annu did a huge favour to Emon, because no way was Emon going to leave the show after such harsh criticism and on top of that Emon became the centre of attention with an entire segment dedicated to him! So good for him!
Next, Chang, Deepali, Puja, Ankita Mishra and Amit were declared safe!
The focus turned to Smita Adhikari, Parleen, Prashant, Charu and Abhishek,
Next Abhishek was asked who he thought would be safe, he chose Smita!
Parleen thought Abhishek would be safe!
Charu had no idea!
Prashant thought Smita would be safe!
Smita thought Prashant would be safe!
Mini called Smita, Parleen and Charu on the stage as they all were in Danger Zone!
Abhishek and Prashant were declared safe!
So instead of Bottom Four, the format changed to Bottom Three!
Charu was declared safe and the Bottom Two were,
Smita Adhikari and Parleen Singh Gill!
I hate to say I told y’all so, but I told y’all so!
Judges were asked who they thought should leave the show,
Annu Malek said that based on singing Smita should not leave the show!
Alisha Chinai agreed with Annu that Smita should not leave the show as Smita had shown confidence after the makeover and had rendered the song beautifully!
Udit Narayan chose Parleen for reasons unknown to me!
Javed Akhtar Saab said based on the performance, Smita should not leave the show!
Javed Saab then addressed Parleen and said that a young man had gone to audition as an announcer at AIR and was rejected and then he had gone to Pune Film Institute and was rejected after audition and that reject was none other than Amitabh Bachchan!
Parleen was asked if it was fair that he might leave the competition, Parleen said that though he felt bad, he’ll have to accept whatever decision that junta has made! Parleen was then asked if he had expected that he would be in danger after his performance, Parleen said that he had!
Smita was asked if she had expected that she would land in the danger zone, Smita said that if they asked her whether she’d leave because of her singing, she would have said no, but if they asked her if she'd leave because of performance, she had indeed expected that she’d be in the danger zone!
Hussain announced that Smita Adhikari was leaving the competition!
This was not exactly shocking, because I knew that she would leave the show soon! It would have really hurt me if Smita would have left after giving stellar performances, but the truth is her singing abilities had suffered a bit after she ventured into the Galas!
The most interesting part was Smita’s composure!
Annu Malek said that he wondered why the junta wasn’t listening to him, because when he said that Smita should have left, they kept her in and when she improved the junta eliminated her! And asked if the junta was playing with the contestant's emotions! Like Duh! This is a Reality Show!
Mini said that she was amazed that the cry-baby of Indian Idol 3 was so calm and collected, when she was actually leaving the show!
Smita said that she wouldn’t cry!
Annu Malek said that this was not the end of Smita, this was the beginning! And promised that he’d work with her in the future!
Smita said that she had never imagined that she’d gain so much by just being on the show! And said that she had fallen in love with the platform on which she sang the songs and it felt like she is leaving an extended family!
Then they showed her exit clip and when they showed the clip of her parents, it was heartbreaking and I thought Smita will cave in and start crying, but I was wrong! Her only regret she said was that she won’t be able to fulfil her parents’ dreams!
Javed Saab said that he didn’t see the need to express what he felt about Smita, but he did want to say that the dreams of her parents would not end with her elimination, as the dream was about Smita making a name in music industry, not that she’d be the next Indian Idol! Annu said that one day maybe a time would come when you’d write a song for Smita and I compose the music!
Hussain said that from what he knew of Smita, he thought that Smita was weak and soft emotionally as she cried a lot and now he was witnessing a stronger Smita and he was proud of that fact!
As for her exit song, she chose a composition of her father and sang A cappella and reminded me why I had fallen in love with her singing in the first place!
What I loved about her graceful exit was there was no drama, no emotional outbursts, she left with class and that’s more than enough for me to respect her for life!
Next Gala will bring forth 20 Songs and Govinda as the judge… See y’all then!

Hey, what about today's episode? Now it's really full of suspense as to who'll be voted out... I missed the performances of Abhishek and Puja. Who d'you think won't be there for the next week? Yes, could not agree more. A quick recap before tomorrow would be great cause it will be a moot point of sorts if it is posted after the results of the elimination round are known.
