Indian Idol 3 - Parleen Singh Gill Leaves After High Drama Sprout
 2007-07-30 02:00:55
Television The show started with Mini Mathur telling us that the singers were so good on Friday that the viewers sent in 1.5 million votes! (That’s it?) Based on those votes, Hussain further added that the viewers had sent Deepali Sahai to the Danger Zone! Whoa! That was quick! Hussain asked Deepali to join the hosts on the stage! Mini wondered whether this would be Deepali’s last night or whether the viewers’ votes would spell an end to someone else’s dream…

This Is Indian Idol 3 – Results Show Of Fifth Gala!

Hussain stated that he would like to talk to the judges before the elimination process. He addressed Annu Malek and said that they had to find the merit of Annu’s statement that Deepali’s performance was affected by her crush, and hence they showed a clip dealing with this statement!

During the Ode to Favourite Actors’ episode, Meiyang Chang had given a rose to Deepali and that one action opened the floodgates! Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar Saab, Mini Mathur and Hussain all had pulled Deepali’s leg leading her to confess that she did not have any romantic feelings for anyone and that Chang was just a good friend! Annu statement that Deepali’s crush was crushing her voice and that they are looking for an Indian Idol and not a Love Idol was based on a misunderstanding on Annu’s part! She was far away from romantic inklings as she was concentrating hardest on her singing! Honestly, Deepali shouldn’t have to defend her stance on any counts – If anything Annu should apologize to her and her family, because being a judge does NOT permit him to make false accusations about her character and her personal life! Deepali stated that Chang just gave her a rose to enhance his performance! Puja Chatterjee agreed that the rose was given to Deepali because she was sitting closer to the stage and any gal would have received the rose if she would have been sitting on Deepali’s seat! Parleen Singh Gill stated that the camera could have captured seemingly close moments featuring Deepali and him! Abhishek Kumar thought that the love stamp on this matter was not justified! Ankita Mishra stated that only Deepali could really state what’s troubling her and affecting her performances, but love or crush weren’t the reasons why her last performance lapsed! Prashant Tamang said that as far as he knew, there wasn’t anything brewing between Chang and Deepali!

Mini asked Deepali to clarify her stand irrespective of the fact whether she stays or goes! Alisha Chinai interrupted Mini and stated that it was unfair that Deepali was in the Danger Zone and such a compromising situation. She furthered that Annu’s comments really affected the voters and that he went overboard with his statements! All this while Annu was scrambling to interrupt Alisha! Annu said that he was a reputed judge and Alisha should not talk about him in such a manner! Alisha stated that no one is denying him the right to judge but he had no right to get personal! (Woohoo! Ask me how much I love Alisha at this very moment! Go on, ask me!) Annu retaliated that he was not interfering with anyone’s personal life! Alisha said that Annu should stick to the comments about the contestants’ singing! Annu went tangent and said that Deepali had every right to fall for anyone she wants! Alisha agreed that she did have that right, but stated that Annu should mind his own business, to which the five-year-old said that Alisha should mind her own business and that she was losing her objectivity as a judge and had lost her sense of judgement! (Huh? Ok, I would have given this to Annu during the Suhit favouritism phase, but at that moment, Alisha was right!) Alisha stated that Annu can say whatever about the singing and performances, but he crossed a line when he commented on her personal life! Annu’s retaliation? You are not fit to be a judge, I am a better judge, and my comments are fantastic! (Jesus H Christ!) Annu then addressed Deepali and said that Deepali should remember what he had said about Emon Chatterjee (again he had made a baseless allegation) and how Emon grew because of it (the fact is Emon wasn’t bad at all nor was he over-confident, so this is ridiculous) so his comments are for the betterment of the contestants! Alisha stated that it is because of Annu’s allegation that Deepali was in Danger Zone! Annu obviously denied this vehemently stating the junta was not that foolish! Mini interrupted this and said that the point of the matter was that the last Gala was about romance and they just highlighted the romantic aspects of each contestants and she tried to move towards Javed Saab, but not before Annu stated that Javed Saab said that it was ok to be romantic! (That was not the issue, you dumb-ass!)

Mini asked Javed Saab why he thought Deepali was in Danger Zone! Javed Saab said that he was shocked that she was in Danger Zone as Deepali was a great singer, but the reason why she was danger was perhaps due to the fact that her performance was not at par, but it was not a judge’s job to find a reason why her performance was not at par. The judges should respect other people’s privacy as that has nothing to do with the judges! In a nutshell, he agreed with Alisha without provoking Annu! Hussain asked Javed Saab that if it was right for any judge to get personal but before he could answer Annu said that this was a wrong argument and that they should ask Deepali if he was wrong!

Mini asked Deepali to clarify her stance again! Deepali again stated that though she agreed with Annu that her singing was weak (actually it was not) she did not have any inclination towards romance and she was dedicated to her art!

Mini stated that they went to the junta for their opinions and all of them more or less thought Annu was out of line! Even Deepali’s rents were a bit outraged by this allegation!

Annu stated that he noticed something from the clip that he had said whatever he had said after her performance and hence had to find a reason and he did! (Numb-nuts! That’s the point; you have no right to find out why the performance lapsed! How is it that none of the judges talked about how difficult her choice of song was? And pray do tell, how you concluded that the comment after singing was appropriate in nature after seeing the clip?) And if the junta did not agree with him, he didn’t care, because no one actually agreed with the truth! (Hello, by saying that you are saying that she does have a crush, even though she screamed million times that she doesn’t!) And when they agree, they all know the truth and hence Annu Malek is Annu Malek! Man! And I thought Bob Dole loved to address himself as a third person, but Annu puts him to shame!

Hussain stated that they forgot to ask Chang about this situation due to the heated debate and asked him his views about the matter which started with him giving Deepali a rose! Chang stated that it wasn’t a crime to give a rose to anyone, but to allege such things is absolutely wrong! His comments garnered a huge applause!

Hussain turned to Deepali and asked her whether it was a fact that Deepali had thrown the towel in the ring even before the results were declared! Deepali stated that she was scared because her last performance was not that good! Alisha interrupted Deepali and said that Deepali should learn to fight back and a defeated attitude wouldn’t help her! Oh it’s official, I love Alisha! Udit Narayan said that Deepali was an outstanding singer and if one of her performances lapsed, the junta would not eliminate her!

All this drama took a toll on Ankita as she was shaking like a last autumn leaf! She wasn’t faking it because me gal shakes like so when she is angry! On the other side, Javed Saab was pleading with Alisha not to get into a row with Annu because it was useless and all the while Annu kept on interfering in their conversations! Alisha had a point that Annu should realize that Deepali came from a small town and such comments would damage her reputation! Javed Saab stated that he was not going to be a part of this drama! You know I always wondered why Javed Saab agreed with Annu, now I finally got the key; Javed Saab just ignores Annu after feeding his ego mockingly!

Mini then called Annu on the stage to ask him a direct question…

Annu was asked who he would save if given a choice between Deepali, who he thought messed up and Parleen, who he thought had given his hundred percent! Annu said that he had twenty eight years of experience and he had worked with best of the bests like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, and Mohammad Rafi to Sunidhi Chauhan and Sonu Nigam and he said that Annu Malek had great sense of music and Annu Malek’s ears were deadly weapons and when he likes a singer, he states that the singing is fantastic (oh yes, we know! You had praised Ankita to the sky on Friday despite it being the worst performance given by her) and when he dislikes a singer, he tells it like it is! And that’s the reason why Annu Malek was choosen (sic) and that’s why Annu Malek sits on the judge’s chair because he is truthful and he is truthful because he cannot betray his ears or the junta! And he continued that between Parleen and Deepali he would choose Deepali! He said that Deepali had a playback singer’s voice while Parleen can be a great act on stage! He then addressed Deepali that he reprimanded Deepali because she was out of tune (actually she wasn’t, I saw the show) and that he didn’t care about her personal love life (again I saw the freaking show)! So anyway he chose Deepali! Mini asked him that when Annu encouraged the contestants by alleging such things wasn’t he influencing the junta’s votes? Annu said that junta was definitely influenced by Annu Malek, but they are not foolish, they could have ousted Emon, (I hate to remind him that his over-confidence bit landed Emon in Danger Zone) so when four people were saying Annu Malek was wrong, forty thousand thought that Annu Malek was right and wanted Emon to improve! Alisha interrupted Annu and said that Annu was missing the point, people loved Annu’s comments about contestants’ work and singing, people are objecting to the fact that Annu is crossing the line by getting personal (something I am painfully aware of since last few weeks) and Annu retorts that only Alisha has a problem with Annu’s style of judging as the other two never said a word about it! (Did you even listen to a word Javed Saab said?) And furthered he knew how to judge the contestants as he knew how they all sang! Oy! This man is incorrigible! Annu repeated that his comment was after Deepali’s performance and if Javed Saab can joke, why is it such a huge deal if he said that Deepali’s crush worked against him and he also thought Chang was wrong in thinking that they are blaming him! (Hundred bucks say that Chang would be the next target!) Why did the people create such a hue and cry! Mini said that’s because Deepali landed in Danger zone! To which he said that Deepali was a good sanger (sic) and that she should be careful because she could be oust by the same people who brought her to this stage! What a blowhard!

Next Alisha was called on the stage and asked to choose between Abhishek and Puja, Alisha stated the Puja was a better singer when compared to Abhishek and she would choose Puja! When asked if she wanted to say anything more to Annu, Alisha replied that she had already made her point clear! I love her! Oh, I forgot when she was called on the stage; Annu said that the war would be over when Annu Malek will decide! Shut Up!

Next Udit came on the stage and chose Emon and Ankita to be safe, while placing Chang in Danger Zone!

Javed Saab was the last judge to come on stage and he thought that it was unfair to pit Prashant with Amit Paul as Amit was a superior singer compared to all, so when asked who he’d choose from Ankita, Emon and Chang, he stated he would flip a coin for Emon and Chang, but would definitely save Ankita! (This is going to be ugly in later stages!) Ankita’s leg was still shivering due to the high drama!

Coming back to the elimination process,

Mini told Parleen that the junta as well as Annu had placed him in Danger Zone! His cousin was visibly upset! Hussain played with Abhishek and Emon before he declared them safe! Puja was invited to the stage as she was in Danger Zone! Prashant, Amit and Chang were declared safe and so was the shivering Ankita!

Turning to the judges, Mini asked them whether history would repeat again and a gal would go home as they did the last four weeks!

Annu said that junta wasn’t interested in selecting a gal Indian Idol and that junta which was so upset at his harsh criticism wasn’t paying attention to his opinions as they are voting less for gals! (The fact is he criticized both the gals the most, so what the * is he talking about?) Annu thought that Parleen would be safe!

Udit was asked if he thought a gal would leave to which he said he knew that a gal would be an Indian Idol this year! (Huh?)

Alisha said that she felt letdown by Puja and Deepali’s inclusion in Danger Zone as they had repeatedly said that these gals can be the next Indian Idol, but knowing the voters mood, a gal would be leaving the show!

Javed Saab on other hand thought that the person in danger was Parleen!

Finally, the result was declared and the person going home was Parleen Singh Gill!

WHAT?

Ok, I wasn’t a big fan of Parleen, but he did not deserve to go after last two performances, he was getting better! However, on the other hand, let’s face a fact; Parleen was not as strong a contender that he would have won the title! Did he deserve to go this week? No! But then neither Puja nor Deepali deserve to be in Danger Zone! C’est La Vie!

As Mini announced Parleen’s name, Deepali and Puja stood stunned and the other contestants broke down! Parleen took the result in stride and was quite a trooper! Annu stated that the result was an absolute shocker!

Mini told Parleen that she was going to miss him (Aw! I didn’t know I cared for Parleen this much because I got teary from this moment) and she acknowledged Ayush – Parleen’s cousin, who had never missed a single shoot!

Parleen stated that he wanted to inform everyone that he auditioned for Indian Idol 2 and was rejected because he was not yet trained and then he worked hard and came for Idol 3 and he felt that he gained a lot by reaching the Final Galas! And he said that he would miss many things as he leaves but mostly he would miss his fellow contestants and asked them not to cry! (Aw! Sweet Guy!)

They should his exit clip! He really was quite attached to the other contestants and they all loved him a lot! I just wish Abhishek would have dialed down his emotional breakdown, because it felt a lot like he was doing it for the camera!

Javed Saab told Parleen that people had not seen last of him as soon he would have his own CD out and his own music video and his shows would be sold out! And that he wasn’t saying all this to make Parleen feel better but because he believes that it will come to pass! (That was really sweet!)

Then Hussain asked him to render the exit song!

Parleen sang, “Layi Vi Na Gayi”! OH MY GOD! It was the best exit singing ever! If Parleen would have sung like this in the competition during the Galas, there was no chance in heck that he would have been eliminated ever! It was a performance of a great calibre and it made me a lot sadder that he was eliminated! What amazing tone, what marvellous Harkats and what outstanding emotions!

The contestants were transfixed in grief till Puja landed on the stage and showed support by clapping and that’s all it took for Parleen to breakdown and well only a stone hearted person would remain unmoved! Everyone and I mean everyone was moved to tears, Alisha as well, but to see Mini and Hussain in tears was really heartbreaking! Especially Mini!

I didn’t think I’d be tears when Parleen would leave but I was and I wish him the best in life! He seems like a jaunty friendly bloke and I am sure many young gals cried their eyes out now that the sexy performer has left the building!

Next week, Illa Arun joins as the Guest Judge!

Till then, Sayonara!

A big shock as three out of four judges and the junta in my opinion had predicted one of the girls would most surely be eliminated. Parleen's elimination was quite a tear jerker for everyone on the show, especially the contestants who I believe had grown extremely attached to him. weeeeh However, one can't help but remark how ironic it is that when Parleen gave his best (based on his performance Friday July 27) and received the most compliments, he has been subjected to such a cruel fate. Ditto for Smita Adhikari who got eliminated soon after giving a good performance with "Salaam E Ishq." Why the discrepancy among a contestants' most recent performance and their subsequent fate on Idol?

The bigger question is was there in fact a gender bias at work as touted and repeatedly argued on previous and today's II3 episode. Perhaps, it is hard to miss that the bottom three last week and this week had more than one girl. However, could it just be that they did not perform as well in comparison to the boys? When I refer to the boys, I believe it is quite transparent that there is no disputing that Emon Chatterjee is a brilliant singer and his gender merely cannot be accounted for his success (i.e. his fanbase and votes) so far in the game. Ditto for Amit Paul! Thus, I would say that the longevity of these two contestants in the race has been more on account of their talent than the perceived "male bias."

When one brings to mind other male contestants, namely Prashant, Chang, Parleen, and Abhishek, perhaps gender bias may be at work. At least in Prashant's case regional bias plays a strong hand. However, have Deepali, Charu (previously eliminated), and Puja performed so exceptionally well in the weeks that they being forecasted as Bottom 3 came as an unbelievable shock? I would argue otherwise

I feel while Deepali has still visibily demonstrated her prowess as a melodious singer with immense playback potential and near flawless performances, Puja and Charu have slipped more than once (with poor or mediocre performances) in the Galas. Today's elimination if anything should make it quite clear that gender bias alone does not drive voting patterns. There is much at work and audiences do indeed weigh in a singers' brilliance and overall talent before deciding on their precious votes for them.

Hey Sprout, that was an awesome recap and thank you so much. Actually you didn't leave a single leaf unturned, ie you said everything about Annu Malik so aptly. I think that man's suffering from "Delusions of Grandeur" which means he thinks about himself as he was specially endowed with some super natural powers so that he can see and hear what other ordinary people can't. What I feel for him is Sympathy. Hats' off to Alisha for speaking out so brilliantly... she was representing a majority section of the viewers, I think..
All the while I was really concerned with Ankitha and my heart really went out to Parleen also..I always thought that Prashanth deserved to go home more than anyone else..

Sprout - so what has been going on with you in the last week or so? and where were you?

Anyway this was an excellent recap - even more than excellent actually. Better than the best as Alisha said and what Parleen sang.

The fact you actually caught Anny Malik's line ' this will only be over when I say it' etc shows you deserve the catty crown. I thought that captured the low scum he is, and was wondering if people caught that.

And yes I agree with you, Alisha is a doll. At least she had the guts unlike others to stand up to that loud mouth. I also am fascinated by your take that Javed Ji plays to Annu's enormous ego to make fun of him -- I am going to watch that angle next time. I hope you are right, I wondered why a man of his learning and achievement will not call Annu to task.

So am I right? Could Parleen singh (haha pun intended) or what? You all said he was just a good face, I think he has it and I was personally moved by his good sportsmanship and class in leaving the show. He was more concerned that all the others were not sad or crying as he was voted out. Class Act.

It is really the first time I have seen Mini cry (what a sweeite) since Idol 1.

This 30m show was a full 3 hour hindi movie in itself, and you did justice AND MORE to it in this recap. Thanks and great job!

ItemGirl and the rest ;)

Hey Sprout,
A fantastic review and totally agree with the comments made in the article. Parleen did not deserve to go out when he was improving so much and ditto for the fact that it was a very moving exit.
Keep up the good work

Sprout brings an interesting point to the fore. Isn`t Javed Akhtar enigmatic? He seems to feed "the five year old`s" (loved that sprout) ego while disagreeing with him. It`s like he has an anu malik block filter in his opinions (everyone but Anu gets it). Btw i loved the way his wife (Shabana Azmi) came down on Anu for his criticism of Emon.
On the other hand his partiality towards Ankita. If he had to chose between Emon, Chang and Ankita he would flip a coin between Emon and Chang (wth????) but wouldn`t let ankita go? very enigmatic indeed.

Hi there,

Great recap! I always wait to read your comments as soon as the show gets over. But how come, your recaps are a couple days late (don't get me wrong, I can't wait to read your recap!!).

Will Prasanth ever get eliminated? Watching Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, I can't bear to see people like Prasanth, Abhishek still on this show. I feel for Parleen.

annu's comments landed deepali in the danger zone. And annu's & javed akhtar's combined favouritism towards ankita has always shielded her. they have brainwashed the gullible audiences into thinking that she's THE singer. but truth be told, ankita is a mediocre singer. she can only sing & perform on songs like chamma chamma & babuji zara dheer chalo. her reality was exposed when she sang suraj hua maddham. it was horrible. it is a passionate, intense song but she sang it as if it's a masti, fun & seductive song in her trademark style. and her voice was nothing to write home about. so i guess everyone better wakes up to ankita's reality. she's a performer who can just about sing and NOT a singer who performs also as javed akhtar had once put it but alas! he himself fails to recognize that. ankita was the worst performer of last episode. she should have gone instead of parleen. parlee's much better than her.

I hope II3 producers will provide psychiatric counseling for the contestants as I see atleast a few them having a nervous breakdown by the end. The trauma they are putting these contestants through is just too much! I felt sorry for Ankita and it looked like Deepali was under the microscope being dissected. I hope this won’t have a bad effect on her.
I admired her for how bravely she took all this nonsense. God bless her!

Also, Sprout, I thought you might call this an ‘Annu Malek ego-fest episode’.
I read somewhere that back in 1995, Alisha had vowed to never work with Annu again. They seem to have some kind of rivalry in real life too. I started liking her since she and Shabanaji lashed at Annu.

As for the elimination, it should have been Prashant instead of Parleen. Knowing that Prashant will not be voted out anytime soon I am dreading to see what will happen this week.

Wow! What a fantastic recap. I felt the anger boil inside me towards Annu as I read it, similar to when I was watching the show. And yes, Alisha is pardoned all her baseless supporting of Suhit for standing up to Annu like she did.

BTW I read somewhere that the promo of the next gala showed Alisha walking off the stage. I think Annu's next target is going to be Alisha and not one of the contestants.

I am also beginning to get steamed over JA's deaf support of Ankita. If she remains the last girl standing over Deepali and Puja, II3 will have achieved another milestone in ridiculous decisions.

Personally, I was biting my nails thinking that deepali might be out and my heart will break. But
I was happy that Parleen was voted out. But, when he sang "Layi Vi Na Gayi" (my favorite song), I
was moved. He sang it tremendously well inspite of the fact that his voting out was a complete
shocker after his Gala 5 performance. Looks like everyone is attached to parleen especially Emon,
deepali, ankitha, mini. The way Deepali and emon cried, man.. I was totally upset with this
result. I would have liked Abhishek leaving the show. He was a complete drama in that highly
emotional episode.

Wonderful review. The alisha-annu episode was properly drafted. Annu is getting overboard and I
agree with the other comment in the thread that he is suffering from "Delusions of Grandeur"

Brilliant review!

Thanks for the awesome recap, Sprout!

Yes...Emon landed in the 'bottom 4' zone (thanks to Annu's 'over-confidence', and not really Emon's!).

And yes....JA's and AM's 'deaf' support to anything Ankita does [and not really sings :-( ]...is starting to get on my nerves!!

When JA had pointed out that Emon turned the song "Mitwa" to an item number...I had (kind of) seen his point...was almost expecting the same comment for Ankita's rendition of "Suraj Hua Maddhyam"...but well!!

As for choosing Ankita over Chang and Emon....
Ahem!!

I would like to think Sony might dump Anu malik the next time around anyways. They must not be feeling too happy to have to sign up mediocre singers while the good ones get bullied and knocked off. Even spicing up the show for viewership can`t be worth the returns of having a good singer on their label.

Always love your reviews.

I felt bad when Parleen got voted out though I was never a great fan of him. His exit performance was really good. I think he will do good in future with a name like "Parleen", his good looks and a good voice.

Anu Malik should stop poking his nose in others personal space. Its sad to see how biased JA and AM are towards Ankita.

Anyway I would really like to see Amit and Emon in Top2.

Great Review!

I never cared for Parleen's performances, but was close to tears on Friday. His exit song was very moving and I thought this was his best performance on II3 stage.

I think Abhishesk and Prashant were more eliglible for last week's elimination.

My favorites continue to be Amit Paul & Deepali.

Thanks for your update. Well written. What a drama. Even though I did not agree with the result this time, but I have been suspecting Parleen and Prashant next. I personally do not like Puja as much as judges.
I totally agree with Alisha on Deepali' coment by Anu Malik because in India, people are not broad minded when it comes down to linking some body with romantic relationship. It does effects their life. Some times I think contestent in India should be as bold as American Idol contestent and answer back. I also thought that Deepali was not bad at all. Puja sung a song with out
any emotion in it, also no performance. I don't see her as Indian Idol. I hope Emon, Amit, Ankita and Deepali
comes in final 4.

Don't mind me, I'm just a guest.
