Indian Idol 3 - Folk Night with Ila Arun! Deepa
 2007-08-04 01:02:32
Television This week, Indian Idol reveled in the presence of the queen of folk songs, Ila Arun. To commemorate her presence, this week’s theme was folk songs. And what a gala it was! This was, perhaps, one of the most enjoyable shows in the Gala round so far. I’m just going to cut straight to the chase.

My favorite contestant, Mr. One-Man-Masti-Ki-Paathshaala kicked off the show. I really do want to take him home. He’s so adorable! Mini ain’t kidding when she calls him India’s Sweetheart. He really is!

Emon Chatterjee – Teri Deewani

Emon started the show with a almost-perfect rendition of Kailash Kher’s Teri Deewani. Emon seems to have found his center again, meaning that for a few weeks, he seemed to wane from who he really was. He seemed to lose focus. That focus is what kept him so successful in the Piano Rounds. I’m glad he has this focus back because he has once again began to give consistently fabulous performances.

He sang this song with a lot of skill and a great deal of concentration. So maybe the judges were right, he needed a little more feeling - but, whatever. In my opinion, it was one of the best performances of the night. The audience thought so too because they kept chanting “Once more…”

Javed Akhtar: I agree with Ilaji - he needed a little more feel and passion. But as long as technicality is concerned, he sang well.
Ilaji: "This is the first time I’m seeing you and you look like a young Sonu Nigam! You were technically perfect but you were missing the passion that this song requires."
Udit Narayan: "You’ve sang so well that the public has responded."
Alisha Chinai: "I’ve run out of words to praise this boy. Your voice is out of this world."
Anu Malik: "I disagree with Ilaji. For me, my playback singer is born. You’ve sang every type of song and for me, this is complete singing."

Deepa’s Rating: 10/10

Prashant Tamang– Rind Posh Maal

This song is on repeat on my iPod so you can bet that I was listening carefully. After Prashant’s last several performances, I was waiting for one screw-up so I could write him off as not being Idol material. The end result was good and bad. Now here’s the thing—this song suits Prashant well. He picked the proper song. Had he been trained in classical song, he would have fulfilled this song better than Karunya from last year. However, his imperfections were really evident here and he did go out of tune in several noticeable places.

But overall, he did well. I would, however, like to see him go soon. The other contestants are much better than him.

Javedsaab: "You sang well. Until now, only the people for Darjeeling and Calcutta have been saving you. This time, all of India will save you."
Ilaji: She made a beautiful reference to Darjeeling tea and Kashmir and mangoes which is way too hard to put into English, but she liked the performance.
Uditji: "For the last two performances, I kept thinking that Prashant is done. But today, you’re back in mood (whatever that means!)"
Alisha: "Your voice was beautiful. You’re back!"
Anuji: "The way the judges have praised you, I don’t agree with it. (He then walked on to the stage). The way you’ve sang today…you sang so well! I had to get out of my seat and come here!"

Deepa’s Rating: 7/10

Deepali – Nimbooda

Okay, whew. I’ve been dreading this for a while. Deepali might seriously be the one to go tomorrow, and here’s why. First of all, it was the wrong song choice. Because the theme is folk songs, she could have picked so many beautiful ones but she chose this one. Not good! Second, she sang it well, but she was lacking the energy of this song. Sure, she danced a bit but it wasn’t enough. She could have taken this song to a whole new level but she didn’t take advantage of this opportunity. I think this is one of her weakest performances. And she’s one of my favorite contestants so it makes me sad to say this! Sorry!

Javedsaab: "Anuji’s record is fool-proof. Whoever he yells at always sings well."
Ilaji: "This is a Rajasthani song. You kept your breathing controlled while still maintaining the sweetness of this song."
Uditji: "You set the stage on fire."
Alisha: "You look like a princess. I can see you have your confidence back."
Anuji: "The way you danced, moved, and kept your breath control, I have never seen that in any of the seasons. When you did the dance step, I heard Alisha say “Oh my God” because you danced, sang in tune, and sang well. Outstanding singing and you’re back with bang!"

Deepa’s Rating: 6/10

Abhishek Kumar – Rang De Basanti

Okay, I don’t even wanna talk about this. Abhishek should know his own limitations. "Rang De Basanti"? Not his cup of tea. What a waste of a performance!

Javedsaab: "If you had sung this song on a higher scale, it would have been better. It seemed restricted when you sang in this key."
Ilaji: "I really liked your liveliness. You’re not Punjabi but you captured the feel of the song and danced well. I appreciate that."
Uditji: "I thought that you should have sung on a higher scale as well."
Alisha: "Agreed with Javedsaab. I think you sang well and your body language is good, but you lacked the complete abandon with which you have to sing this song."
Anuji: "We are talking about scale, but no matter what scale you sing in, you have to be in sur. You weren’t. I’m not happy."

Deepa’s Rating: 4/10

Puja Chatterjee – Ni Main Samajh Gayi

For me, Puja and Emon are neck and neck in terms of talent and voice. This was the other awesome performance of the night (after Emon’s). Puja sang the song with such depth and skill that she really cemented the fact that she has what it takes to be where she is now. I also think that with this song, she has an edge over Deepali, and a definite advantage over Ankita. It was an amazing performance!

Javedsaab: "I don’t believe in superstition, but Puja, “Aaj tu apni nazar utaarle.” "
Ilaji: "Puja, I’d like to say that you reminded me of Reshma, with the maturity and depth in your voice."
Uditji: "At least Anuji is praising him, no matter how hard it is for him."
Alisha: Standing ovation.
Anuji: "In my career, I have never seen a singer who has made me cry. You made me cry today. I already said that Emon is playback singer material. Now I’m saying that you are too. You sang so well. You have such a unique voice that you made me cry. I’m so proud to have you here. It was effortless."

Deepa’s Rating: 10/10

Amit Paul – Omkara

You can forgive a person once for forgetting the lyrics, but you can’t do it repeatedly. However, this goof-up was definitely not as bad as his first one and he did a pretty decent job of covering it up. Nevertheless, it was still noticeable and I was not impressed. He could have just covered it and picked up the rest of the song, but he got distracted and the rest of his song suffered. Overall, he did a decent job, but definitely not his best. It is, however, probably enough to keep him in the game.

Javedsaab: "I didn’t notice that he forgot his lines. I was lost in his voice. No matter what anyone says, you have a magical voice."
Ilaji: "When Javedsaab loves someone, he doesn’t see their faults. So for a writer to overlook the fact that you forgot the lyrics must mean that he really likes you. I really like your voice, which I had heard in last week’s episode. You really are the find of Indian Idol. But today I felt that you are more suited to soft songs and need to work more on folk songs."
Uditji: "I don’t agree with Javedsaab or Anuji. I agree with Ilaji. Amit, you picked the wrong song and you were worried about singing it wrongly." (Anuji here didn’t agree, of course)
Alisha: "Anuji is totally blinded. He has not given the totally mind-blowing performance for folk singing."
Anuji: "I don’t know why I’m not agreeing with Ilaji today. I think that he shouldn’t be categorized. To me you’re a complete singer and the find of Indian Idol." (Then he proceeded to argue with Ilaji. What a cocky *!)

Deepa’s Rating: 7.5/10

Ankita Mishra – Main Aayi Hu UP Bihar Lootne

Ankita’s song selection was spot on considering that Ila Arun was the guest star. She was her usual consistent self, with so-so singing and an awesome performance. We all know that she does something different every time. She may not be playback material, but I’ll bet people are lining up to sign her for live shows and stuff. She did go off-tune in several places. In some, she was too sharp, in others she was too flat. But since when have we started watching Ankita for her singing, anyway?

Javedsaab: "This is a song that requires nautanki, which was missing. But you were really good today."
Ilaji: "I really liked you. When I watched your performance and heard you sing, you did it well." (The rest was unintelligible for me, for some reason. But I’m sure she was saying something valuable).
Uditji: "Ankita has performed well. Singing was okay."
Alisha: "All your mistakes are forgiven. It was mindblowing."
Anuji: "I would request you to focus more on sur, but for me, again today, you were outstanding."

Deepa’s Rating: 7/10

Meiyang Chang – Rut Aa Gayee Re

This was a solid performance. In the last few weeks, Chang has been slipping. With this performance, he finally gave everyone a reason to breathe a sigh of relief. He was really good!

Javedsaab: "He reminded me of Sachin Tendulkar, who slipped in the middle but came back with a century."
Ilaji: "First, I would like to say that you look very handsome. Second, you’ve performed so well. Hat's off to you!"
Uditji: " Today, Chang sang so well that I’m wondering if he won’t become Indian Idol."
Alisha: "You are such a natural. You rocked today. His voice is the most unusual and original voice."
Anuji: "I’m not surprised, actually. I like to stick my neck out for people I love, and respect, and admire. Chang, you proved me right. I knew you would sing well and you did!"

Deepa’s Rating: 8.5/10

So there you have it, folks. This week, my bottom four would be Abhishek, Prashant, Deepali, and Ankita. My prediction for elimination: Abhishek or Deepali. Sprout’s elimination prediction: Abhishek.

Now for my shameless plug: Keep your fingers crossed for Deepali! Send her your votes!

I am surprised that in the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa review, Deepa rated Raja 10/10 for his rendition of the same song Chang sang in this Galas. If u compare the two Changs version was as good, if not better than that of Raja. I think Chang deserves nothing less than a 10. His rendition of "Rut Aa gayee re" was outstanding.

Okay, I am not sure what I had written. But it was only a guess, on my part. I thought Abhishek was the weakest performer and threw that out there. Who would know that would turn out to be true?

The review I lliked most was the one jointly done by Sprout & Deepa. I know it is asking for too much, but, can we have that please?

Rima, Pls do not take it so harsh on yourself. Sometimes misunderstandings occur. I am sure you meant right. I realize that you put integrity high up on your list of attributes. Keep it up.

Deepa, I agreed with most of the things you wrote in your journalistic precision, except that for Deepali. But, I can see why you feel that way as I feel, so do many others. That maybe why she used to hit the bottom so often. Deepali is very intelligent. I believe she has done a requirements analysis for Indian Idol - singing - dancing( performing in II lingo), planned her approach with a lot of thinking and is trying to deliver with engineering precision. Unfortunately, art is more about the expression of the heart delivered in a liberal manner. You connect with the audience with a song from your heart not with a delivery of engineered design. She needs to just let go and sing her heart out.

On Javed-ji: Javed-ji is the poet on Tiranga, a musical production on the Indian flag. Pandit Jasraj is the singer. If Javed-ji was asked to choose between Ankita and Pandit Jasraj for Indian Idol, I am sure he would choose Ankita. Pandit Jasraj only sings on stage. He does not perform like Ankita.

I am totally disagreeing with these comments. Whoever is doing, that’s should be gal… Deepali is one of the best singer as well as performer…looks like you are jealous with her…., prashanta is another good contestants….as well as Chang which is proved today’s result..
Top 4 : DEEPALI, Chang, Prashanta, Amit
Bottom 4 : Abhishek, Emon, Pooja, Ankita
Out of the show : Abhishek

So, please be realistic, before you give any comment… don’t put any comments in jealousy…, and one more thing Deepali is damm good singer, performer, and she is a package of talent.. don’t ever underestimate her…. Best of luck you !

Hey, Nice recap Deepa... I liked it.. though I do prefer the collaborative effort by you and Sprout better...

btw, wonder why this piece of info didn't find a place in your review.. but I'm sure everyone noticed Javedji trying to stop Ilaji from making a futile attempt of arguing with Annu.. it was hilarious!

Prashant dug his own grave by selecting the RDB song....I knew he was gone the moment I identified the song he was singing....It's a real tough song! If I am not wrong, Amey Date was voted out immediately after he sang the same song altho he did a much much better job at it....

Thanks Deepa. Sorry I didn't know the format, but I guess it is always fun covering II3 episodes, regardless. By the way, could you delete my repeated posts leaving only one copy of my review--sorry, somehow couldn't manage to delete the others!!
Why on earth would you think that you would be able to delete something on MY website? Chicky there are 2 people in this whole wide wonderful world who have raised themselves up enough on this site to earn that priviledge (outside of myself and my husband) and neither of them are you.

I know you have applied to be an editor and my husband will be emailing you on that topic sometime today (maybe tomorrow depends on how much time we have before we wander off to the wrestling show today).

Did not like this review....it seemed quick and prefunctory...at the very base level the judges comments were out of order from the show and did not flow. Forget the contestants, I give Deepa 5/10. I want something similar to last week from Sprout.....too many details were missing....like Emon dedicated his song to Parleen, Puha for example sang the quinty Punjabi Song...Ankita's word.....this was a quick hash job. And I don't mean to be harsh since I have loved Deepa's review in the past. This time I am doing a cut and paste job since at the last D review my comments disappeared when I disagreed!!! NO CENSORSHIP!!
Okay, I have been largely content to ignore all of you and leave you in Sprout's capable hands (since all things Indian confuzzle me anyhow). But I fear that y'all are becoming a smidge too rowdy for one lone Sprout to handle. So I have decided to pay more attention to you (which I guarantee some of you won't like). Thus the following rules will be instituted:

1. Don't bash the writer. Life is hard for all of us, including the writers who have lives to live and do all of this just because they want to. People like you come along and make them not want to do this. If you want to be responsible for no more II coverage on this website, you can continue on with your bashing of the writers. But then you'll be out a website to come to (because I'll ban you) and everyone else will be without II coverage so they'll hate you too.

2. You can disagree with the opinions. I will personally guarantee your right to have your own opinion. But you MUST do so nicely without insulting. You have the right to think that artist a is awesome and that Deepa is wrong to not fall in love with artist a, but you do not have the right to insult Deepa for not loving artist a.

3. Don't try to boost your own opinion by posting again. You're welcome to post multiple times, but posting nearly the same thoughts is just an attempt to make it seem like others agree with you (for example the guy/gal who missed Sprout, those two reactions were the same person). It will fail, we see that you are the same person. Soon everyone else will see it too as we're fixing that degree of the anonymity.

In short, you will all play nice or you will leave. Whether you leave of your own device or through me pushing you out, you will leave so others who can play nice can enjoy this website.

For now, I have decided to leave all of the comments above this posting about the "preferences" of Sprout over Deepa (or vice versa), but anything beyond this post WILL be deleted. Drop the subject.

Dear Curlio,
I am not sure why you are bringing me into this. I do not know this guest and his/her comments or recommendations are his own, so why are you penalizing me for someone else's thoughts! You can check the IP address.

I had only thanked Deepa for informing me of the process to contact you or Dusty to become an editor. I do respect the rules, so I am not sure why this should affect my application to be an editor!

Dear Curlio,
Again, with reference to the above, I just wished to clarify that when I told Deepa about deleting my post, it was with reference to my write up under Webboard titled "Indian Idol goes Araraa with Ila Arun" which by mistake got posted four times in a row. I am relatively new to the forum, so I wasn't aware how to go about reporting the erroneous multiple posts.

I assure you that I do realize that *I * do not have the authority to delete my writeup, but I felt that my multiple reviews that got accidentally submitted were crowding up your website, and thus it was only a request to clean up the board and preserve only relevant reviews. Once again, apologies for any misunderstanding but I was just trying to be polite!
Sincerely,
Rima

Yes Sprout, I do love that people mistake you for a girl more often than I was ever mistaken for a guy. It's just fair by my standards lol!

Prashant is the least qualified contestant on II3 and if god forbid, he wins, I bet we won't hear of him much after it's all over (he can take the 1crore and start a business I guess or distribute it among his fellow jawans who would have made him II)

I do not agree with Deepa's rating. Emon is a good singer but as he was warned earlier, he goes off-sur at high pitch. To me he will not going to get the II3 title. Lets see the next round of patriotic theme, how he fares.
Amit look very confused when he sang 'Omkara'. This is a great song, rich in earthy lyrics, meaning praising of bahubali like Omakara. Amit should understand the lyrics before singing. It was a total dissapointment.
Ankita can only perform the latka-jhatka types songs without knowing the sur and taal. Do not be surprised if she wins hte contest because of bewkoof janta of India.
I can see only Deepali, Puja, Chang and Prashant going to top 4.
Evetually it will be fight between Deepali and Chang.

Dear guest (2007-08-06 08:02:32)

I think your prediction of Deepali vs Chang is perfectly in line with the mediocre level of idols produced thus far. I would further the prediction by proposing Chang should win.

I would also like to also suggest replacing puja with ankita to make the final four so we can stop watching the musical travesty altogether :).

I think I missed the show where Emon was warned that he goes "off-sur at high pitch" and am quite perplexed as he is probably the only singer (with the exception of puja) who can sing high notes in perfect key (please listen to "is pyar ko kya naam doon" in the previous to last galas).

To say that Amit ( even with his limited range)
is worse than Chang is equally ludicrous. I`m not trying to bash Chang here but i`ve listened to his version of "rut aa gai re" and conclude that his version is quite weak. Actually this song was surprisingly well rendered by Sandeep from II2 (please compare) and was the only memorable performance of his i can think of. I think Chang`s main problem is his ennunciation. He seems to have accented hindi which is quite good for soft slow pop songs but gets into serious difficulties as soon as he goes for songs with fast tempo and more classical beats. I commend his brave efforts at choosing a sukhwinder song for this gala but he is still weak compared to Amit.
