Indian Idol 3: Ba Bye Hawa Hawaii

All right, so we are back after Sonu Nigam's guest stint last Gala round and the Indipop numbers So, just for a brief recap, here is my take on each contestant's performance:
Emon: Totally rocked it, and also seemed enamored by Sonu
Puja: Was awesome, and good good reviews--good for her!
Chang: Smooth Operator. Loved his outfit, and good song choice
Prashant: Lots of energy for the normally reticient Sepoy, but failed to impress the judges
Anky baby: Loved her and that Shweta Shetty song, but the judges thought otherwise--oh well.
Amit: Nice. One of my favorite songs, and you could tell he perfected it.
So, as per performances, the people who in my humble opinion were likely to be in the Danger Zone this week were, in no specific order--Ankita, Chang, and Prashant.
Of course, Idol Eliminations are based on public voting, so why would predictions be that simple?
Abhijeet Sawant AGAIN
*********************
Anyho, the episode started with Idol mascot Abhijeet Sawant singing a song from his new album Junoon. Personally, I never saw Idol 1, so I really don't have any particular attachment (read fan craze/loyalty) towards Abhijeet, though I guess it is a nice gesture that he keeps reappearing every other episode to wish the contestants luck and promote his new album.
At the end of his number, Abhijeet was again welcomed by Mini and Hussain, and he thought that Amit was the "lambi race ka" horse, followed closely by Emon. I completely agree with that
THE HEART ATTACK GAME--first one with a heart attack wins!
******************************************************
From here on begins Sony's new ploy to give the contestants a semi-heart attack. So, Hussain and Mini line-up the final 6 for what seems like a firing squad punishment and then decide to target them one by one--slow poisoning, how lovely.
First up, Mini and Hussain note that they will follow a slightly unusual order today, by revealing the eliminated contestant first--You think we would fall for this? There is no meat in Eliminations if you give away the contestant exiting at the start.
Anyho, I watched patiently like an obedient viewer willing to be duped by II. Mini and Hussain revealed the contestant to leave today (scary tan dan dan, music) IS......EMON CHATTERJEE! (Close up of Emon's mom, Emon's face twice, and all the judges who try to look shocked!)
Here is what followed:
Mini: Emon what do you feel?
Emon: What can I feel? I mean I am lamb ready to be butchered any second. After Deepali ("yeh dosti" theme song from Sholay) this was invitable. Thanks for ending my painful existence. At least I have Sonu ji's birthday cake from last year.
Hussain and Mini: And now we will see Emon's journey.....NOOOOO! WE WILL NOT SEE SNIPPETS FROM EMON'S JOURNEY. EMON YOU ARE SAFE, YOU ARE IN THE TOP 5.
Emon (shocked and perhaps a tad bit annoyed): That is so bad, you guys shouldn't have done that.
There were then close ups of Emon's relieved mom, expressionless judges, and Emon with his "so bad, you guys" again.
WELCOME TO THE SAFETY ZONE--membership expires in 1 week
*********************************************************
Joining Emon in the zone of safety and happy-happy memories is AMIT! WOOT WOOT! I was genuinely happy with this decision.
And Amit did not leave without his FRIEND......PRASHANT! (yawns)
Yes, well that is an Indian Idol fact right. In fact, he is so bulletproof that you can detect fake spoilers miles away armed with just this info. If someone tells you the Bottom 3 includes Prashhhhant....FAKE ALERT! This cannot be, and that is reality ladies and gentlemen.
THE REAL DANGER ZONE VICTIMS
******************************
Chang, Ankita, and Puja!
As usual, Gala performances are no indicator of Elimination DZ victims.
So, the three victims stood together and looked confused, waiting for the ultimate execution sentence.
LET'S PLAY A PREDICTION GAME--Any last requests?
***********************************************
So to kill time and prolong this torture, Mini and Hussain ask of the three each some very controversial questions before one of them is shot down. And here they are:
To Ankita: Who is your biggest threat?
Ankita: Both of them, I guess.
Mini: No, pick one!
Ankita: I guess Chang
let's play it safe, Anky baby. Her best friend will surely understand
To Chang: Who are the Top 6 in your opinion?
Chang: Emon first, then Puja, followed by Amit, and then me, Ankita, and Prashant all share fourth place. Hey, good one Smart Chang
To Puja: Do you or Ankita deserve to be in the Final 5?
Come on now, that is too much!
Puja: You are asking me this? I am in the danger zone, too, you know. Yeah, good going Puja. What an ironic question to ask someone with a noose around their neck.
Puja: Sorry, I don't know.
Nice one, Puji. Man these kids are getting good at this.
FINAL GAME: Whose got mail?
**************************
Okay, guys, so you will love this. Their final ploy to torture the II3 victims (sorry contestants) was a mail game. This sounds simple, but it was excruciating to watch and to be a part of.
So, here's how it proceeded:
1. Each of them got an envelope.
2. Two of the envelopes are blank, one contained the name of the Eliminated candidate.
3. Then, they asked each candidate to open their respective envelopes while the camera did some more "targeted" browsing of the usual suspects (judges, audience, family members, contestants again and again panicked and weary, and the safe contestants--especially Emon).
THE WINNER (SORRY THE LOSER) OF THE MAIL GAME IS:********************************************
Chang opened his envelope.....silence
Nothing, it is empty!
Puja opened her envelope...silence, tensed looks
Nothing, it is empty!
So, Ankita carried the deadly envelope.
She opens it, and the name of the contestant that we say goodbye to IS:
PUJA
***********************************************
Nobody really cried for Puja, or at least not on camera. The camera tried real hard to capture Emon's look, but he wasn't crying just smiling and being supportive. I guess he dried all his tears after Deepali's departure. So, we have a short look at Puja's journey. Her best moments on Idol, "Ek pyaar ka nagma"--her best song, in her opinion.
Finally, she is in tears and wishes the contestants all the best and apologizes to her dad for not being able to live up to the challenge.
Awww Puja, it's not your fault. You did your best.
Alisha noted how contestants that sing well get eliminated. Good point, Alisha, though I have the theory behind it:
If you sing well, then your fans get complacent. They feel she/he is somehow going to make it. So, they don't vote as obsessively and the fans of those who are predicted to be in danger, double up their votes---voila, the "good singer" loses out and is evicted.
Puja leaves with her signature song from Mr. India--Hawa Hawaii.
*********************************************************
Next week, Disco Fever round in the Galas!
Until then, this is your host Rima signing off.

I still don't get it. Rima, you replied saying that Mini announced that next gala will be 'disco night'. That part I heard. But how come a guest has posted which song Ankita sang and all the judges comments? How does one know that?
I also noticed a post on the Indian Idol site yesterday (I don't see it anymore) describing every song that each contestant sings in the next gala and the comments of every judge. Where does one get this kind of info????

People who watch the live recording of the show, squeal the highlights on various blogs and like wildfire it spreads to other sites. The galas are recorded within hours of the results episode, therefore people know about the details fairly soon.

i love deepali. irrespective of whoever eventually wins II3 - be it that stage dancer ankita or prashant (he sings well but there are others better than him, he's got a very strong voters base, i havent ever seen him in bottom 3/4) deepali is II3 for me.

I just read Puja's exit interview on indian idol's official web site. I was quite surprised by her rude comments against Ankita and her lack of training. Kishore Kumar has no classical training and yet became one of the graetest singers. Sunidhi Chauhan is getting classical training only now (after she has become famous).
Puja is completely blinded by her goal to become a playback singer. But is II3 a launch platform for playback singing? Also, Ankita has been very clear from the start that she wants to be a pop star. So, stage performance is important for Ankita!
I think Puja and Deepali have been very mean to Ankita and that has affected her confidence in the Gala rounds. If you watch the Piano round, Ankita was much better.

Your guess is as good as mine Seema. I have no idea how that guest knew what songs and reviews would be provided in the next Gala. There are numerous spoiler threads around, and perhaps that was one of their sources. The fact that you do not see that post detailing the performances is because it was indeed a spoiler and hence was immediately deleted by the admins.

Puja's arrogant and insulting exit interview has resulted in a pro-Ankita backlash. A lot of people now believe what Ankita said about feeling alone. Ankita is definitely not the conventional bhartiya nari type and got ostracized by her fellow female contestants for being different.
Smita, Deepali and Parleen were very gracious in their exit and that is the true mark of a winner!

I agree with you. Not abt Puja and Deepali being mean but the fact that Ankitas singing has gone down from the piano rounds. She was a great performer and a gal who could sing well.....But now her singing has suffered and i think she is trying to impress too much with her performances. Earlier whatever she did came out naturally....Now it looks rehearsed.......

“Compared to Deepali and me, Ankita is nothing!” - PUJA
“Compared to Deepali and me, Ankita is nothing!”
- Puja Chatterjee
Puja’s elimination came as a shock to everyone, including Puja and her parents who refused to believe the news. She was so shaken and hurt that we found the sweet and demure Puja transformed into a volcano of anger after the elimination. She spoke out against those who don’t value trained singers and, instead, choose to vote for the stage performers. Excerpts from the interview:
Did you expect the elimination?
No, not at all. I was shell-shocked. My last performance was outstanding. I am really confused about how the public is voting. I hope they are voting for singing and not just because someone shakes a leg. I am scared for my friends now—Emon and Amit are the only two singers left in the contest. Hope the public does justice with them.
Do you agree with Ankita’s statement that stage performance is as important as singing?
I want to talk straight now, I am not scared of anyone. I seriously wonder now, what is the value of the rigorous training I’ve undergone. The public is throwing out trained singers, who have knowledge of the grammar and punctuation of singing, and is retaining those who don't know the A, B, C of singing. It seems our hard work has no value.
I still think Ankita is wrong. Stage shows are important, but finally we have to do playback singing. We have to sing for albums. If your singing is not up to the mark no one will let you stay even for a minute. And for me performance is the expression of a song while singing. I have just one thing to say: if any music director calls her today, he will see if she can sing perfectly, not whether she can dance. And Anu Maliik himself said that if he had to choose someone for playback singing, he’ll choose either Deepali or me. And for stage shows it would be Ankita.
What is your opinion about public voting?
I totally lost faith in audience voting after Deepali was voted out. Ok, I don’t mind that I am out, but how can Deepali be voted out? She is a fantastic singer. Everybody called me Sunidhi Chauhan and Deepali Shreya Ghoshal. Compared to us Ankita is nothing. Honestly, Ankita is nothing as a singer. For singing even a single harkat she asks us if it is right. She doesn’t have a clue about singing.
Any message for the public?
I want to request them to vote sensibly. They should listen minutely before voting because someone’s career is at stake. I want to ask the audience if a person is not able to sing in sur after a week’s practice, how will they perform after two hours of practice in a studio? People should vote for those who are singing well… not those who can dance or is well dressed is good looking. These things shouldn’t matter. Nothing should matter other than singing.
Who has been your favourite judge and why?
My favourite judge is Anu Maliik. That is because he always supports trained singers like Deepali, Emon, Amit and me. He has also declared on camera that he will give Deepali and me a chance to sing in his next film. I am really grateful to him and look forward to working with him.
What are you future plans?
I plan to come back to Mumbai this month along with Deepali. We both will stay together and struggle to make it. We want to challenge everyone. We want to show them what we are capable of. Today, we have been eliminated, but tomorrow we will be back. If we have to knock on the door of every music director, we are ready to do it.
How did your parents react?
They still can’t believe that I have been eliminated. They just told me to always believe in myself. We have to lose some to gain some. If singers like Lataji and Kishoreda can struggle, why can’t we struggle? My parents are with me.
Among the remaining singers, who do you think are the strongest?
I think Emon and Amit are the only singers left now. The rest are just competing for the title. They’re bent on winning. They don’t sing from the heart. A true singer sings because he loves singing. You’ve to fall in love with a song to sing it from your heart.
Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?
I want to become the next Asha Bhosle. She is such a versatile singer, but does she dance on stage? Look at Lataji, does she dress up to sing on stage? No, they don’t. I want to follow their footsteps and sing like them.

yes Deepali and Puja had said rightly that Ankita is not a perfect singer and i must admit that they both r very honest and had proved their point and it was truly unfair to Puja and Deepali as they should be in the competition instead of Ankita and Prashant

After reading Puja's exit interview what do I feel? That she's arrogant .....??? Wait a minute! Bravo girl for speaking your mind. She's being real, fearless & no attempt to be diplomatic. How can we say she's arrogant when she's acknowldeging Deepali, Amit & Emon as fantastic singers. She knows who's what. I feel Chang is also a good singer. I can understand her pain when she asks what is the use of years of her singing training when the public is voting for people who sing less and dance more. Puja is a calling a spade a spade. And I don't see why that should be a problem or misconstrued as arrogance. Infact I wonder whether Ankita intended to partcipate in Boogie-Woogie but landed up at II3 by mistake ! Ankita with her modest singing abilities can only perform on ila arun, sunita rao kinda item songs in which there is scope to perform so that audiences & judges are distracted to her performances & don't listen to her singing carefully. Her real self was exposed the day she tried singing Suraj Hua Maddham. She fell flat on her face. It sucked bigtime. For me among the final 3 girls Deepali was the best followed by Puja & lastly Ankita. But strangely they seem to be being voted out in the reverse order ! I can appreciate performance in a siniging competition only if the singing is appreciable. Performance should be an add-on not a substitute for singing ! Like Parleen was a good singer & he used to perform also to enhance his presentation.

Wait a minute! Everyone keeps talking about singing vs performance (especially Ankita's). Where's the performance? Those lewd latka-jhatkas and suggestive singing-- you call that performance? Gimme a break! Ankita is only good for 'dancing' in front of Jamindaars and Thakurs!
Way to go Puja for speaking your mind (and mine)!

Even if Puja is "arrogant", she sings beautifully and she has the right to make the comments that she made. This is a test of singing talent and not of the singers nature or personality. Voting should be based on singing. Period.

Puja's responses were rude (even if she might have been right). She could have made her point without slamming Ankita. I think everyone (including Ankita herelf) knows the where her talents lie. Ankita is not pretending to be a Lataji or Ashaji.
Puja should know that Indian Idol is not all about singing. If that was the case, Karunya would have been II2's Idol. Amey Date (II2) would not have been eliminated in favor of Anuj Sharma or Sandeep.
Padmanav and Bhavin would not have been eliminated on II3.
I think, the biggest advantage of Indian Idol is the kind of exposure that the Top 10 get. If they are good, they will be able to capitalize on that and build a career for themselves. Whether they actually win the Indian Idol does not matter. ( again refer to Karunya and Amey Date who have done well inspite losing the Idol).

I am only saying that we need not be so judgemental about a person who has called a horse "a horse"! People vote for all vague reasons and people are eliminated for the same.. you have given enough examples yourself.
Well, when indian idol judges cannot keep away from commenting about the participants "state of mind" or "personal life".. what can we expect from the people writing in a news group...

I won't call Puja rude....I may call her immature. She's not diplomatic and calls a spade a spade....
I'd say she's young and gets agitated easily...it's her age speaking....
Plus...if you really think about it...whatever she said is true....had she been really arrogant, she wouldn't have said that Deepali was better...she simply ranked the contestants the way they should really be....and is frustrated the way ppl are voting....
As for being anti-Ankita...it's was Sony's doing...and adding masala and drama....
Also, if you are a regular member of India forums etc...you'd know that on one shooting of roobaroo...Mini framed a queston to Ankita in such a way thay resulted in Ankita calling Puja "churail" ...(thankfully it was not aired)....so we don't really see know and see the entire story, etc....also....the things that Sony aired on Deepali's elimination (Ankita-Deepali stuff) were not in good taste either....
Anyway...Puja is really straight talking...and that's why so unpopular....

Whats all this about whether Puja is arrogant or not? Who cares? I think it will be better if we stick to singing and performing.....And as for ankita blasting, give her a break. I mean she never told anyone that she is an exceptional singer. She tries her best and thats that....Does she deserve the II title? Probably not but then neither did sandeep acharya and Abhijit sawant.......So lets just wait and see.....And these personal insults dont help anyone.......

i had recently watched indianidol contestants vedio on Indian Idol Fever in which u were discausing about Puja and Ankita,s specialities . Boys u had said right that Ankita is a good performer boys dedicated very bad songs to her as (zara thumka laga etc) and for Puja u had said right that she has three phases one is u weeping everytime second is she is very bubly and third she became angry so soon (Amit said this ).And lastly not to forget the songs which Emon has dedicated to Puja ( ae shivani to lagni hai nani) at the last the gals were in the mood to kill the boys like Ankita said a dekhen zara kiss main kitna hai dum t Emon and she also said chal tu bhi dance sekh lai phir saath main nachain gai.Puja said to Emon ke agar tu ne phir dobara kabhi mujhe nani kaha to wo chore gi nahi us ko .Ankita said to Amit:Amit bhaia mujh se bach kar dikhao Puja said the same . I was so happy when Puja got out! She has the biggest attitude problem in the world, and sounds like a man, and looks like one too! She only kept criticizing Ankita's performances because she can't do it worth crapt and was jealous, and because Ankita's a million times better than her.
