Indian Idol 3: Ba Bye Hawa Hawaii Rima
 2007-08-19 02:56:32
Television All right, so we are back after Sonu Nigam's guest stint last Gala round and the Indipop numbers So, just for a brief recap, here is my take on each contestant's performance:

Emon: Totally rocked it, and also seemed enamored by Sonu
Puja: Was awesome, and good good reviews--good for her!
Chang: Smooth Operator. Loved his outfit, and good song choice
Prashant: Lots of energy for the normally reticient Sepoy, but failed to impress the judges
Anky baby: Loved her and that Shweta Shetty song, but the judges thought otherwise--oh well.
Amit: Nice. One of my favorite songs, and you could tell he perfected it.

So, as per performances, the people who in my humble opinion were likely to be in the Danger Zone this week were, in no specific order--Ankita, Chang, and Prashant.

Of course, Idol Eliminations are based on public voting, so why would predictions be that simple?

Abhijeet Sawant AGAIN
*********************
Anyho, the episode started with Idol mascot Abhijeet Sawant singing a song from his new album Junoon. Personally, I never saw Idol 1, so I really don't have any particular attachment (read fan craze/loyalty) towards Abhijeet, though I guess it is a nice gesture that he keeps reappearing every other episode to wish the contestants luck and promote his new album.

At the end of his number, Abhijeet was again welcomed by Mini and Hussain, and he thought that Amit was the "lambi race ka" horse, followed closely by Emon. I completely agree with that

THE HEART ATTACK GAME--first one with a heart attack wins!
******************************************************
From here on begins Sony's new ploy to give the contestants a semi-heart attack. So, Hussain and Mini line-up the final 6 for what seems like a firing squad punishment and then decide to target them one by one--slow poisoning, how lovely.

First up, Mini and Hussain note that they will follow a slightly unusual order today, by revealing the eliminated contestant first--You think we would fall for this? There is no meat in Eliminations if you give away the contestant exiting at the start.

Anyho, I watched patiently like an obedient viewer willing to be duped by II. Mini and Hussain revealed the contestant to leave today (scary tan dan dan, music) IS......EMON CHATTERJEE! (Close up of Emon's mom, Emon's face twice, and all the judges who try to look shocked!)

Here is what followed:

Mini: Emon what do you feel?
Emon: What can I feel? I mean I am lamb ready to be butchered any second. After Deepali ("yeh dosti" theme song from Sholay) this was invitable. Thanks for ending my painful existence. At least I have Sonu ji's birthday cake from last year.
Hussain and Mini: And now we will see Emon's journey.....NOOOOO! WE WILL NOT SEE SNIPPETS FROM EMON'S JOURNEY. EMON YOU ARE SAFE, YOU ARE IN THE TOP 5.
Emon (shocked and perhaps a tad bit annoyed): That is so bad, you guys shouldn't have done that.
There were then close ups of Emon's relieved mom, expressionless judges, and Emon with his "so bad, you guys" again.

WELCOME TO THE SAFETY ZONE--membership expires in 1 week
*********************************************************
Joining Emon in the zone of safety and happy-happy memories is AMIT! WOOT WOOT! I was genuinely happy with this decision.

And Amit did not leave without his FRIEND......PRASHANT! (yawns)
Yes, well that is an Indian Idol fact right. In fact, he is so bulletproof that you can detect fake spoilers miles away armed with just this info. If someone tells you the Bottom 3 includes Prashhhhant....FAKE ALERT! This cannot be, and that is reality ladies and gentlemen.

THE REAL DANGER ZONE VICTIMS
******************************
Chang, Ankita, and Puja!

As usual, Gala performances are no indicator of Elimination DZ victims.
So, the three victims stood together and looked confused, waiting for the ultimate execution sentence.

LET'S PLAY A PREDICTION GAME--Any last requests?
***********************************************
So to kill time and prolong this torture, Mini and Hussain ask of the three each some very controversial questions before one of them is shot down. And here they are:

To Ankita: Who is your biggest threat?
Ankita: Both of them, I guess.
Mini: No, pick one!
Ankita: I guess Chang
let's play it safe, Anky baby. Her best friend will surely understand

To Chang: Who are the Top 6 in your opinion?
Chang: Emon first, then Puja, followed by Amit, and then me, Ankita, and Prashant all share fourth place. Hey, good one Smart Chang

To Puja: Do you or Ankita deserve to be in the Final 5?
Come on now, that is too much!
Puja: You are asking me this? I am in the danger zone, too, you know. Yeah, good going Puja. What an ironic question to ask someone with a noose around their neck.
Puja: Sorry, I don't know.
Nice one, Puji. Man these kids are getting good at this.

FINAL GAME: Whose got mail?
**************************
Okay, guys, so you will love this. Their final ploy to torture the II3 victims (sorry contestants) was a mail game. This sounds simple, but it was excruciating to watch and to be a part of.

So, here's how it proceeded:
1. Each of them got an envelope.
2. Two of the envelopes are blank, one contained the name of the Eliminated candidate.
3. Then, they asked each candidate to open their respective envelopes while the camera did some more "targeted" browsing of the usual suspects (judges, audience, family members, contestants again and again panicked and weary, and the safe contestants--especially Emon).

THE WINNER (SORRY THE LOSER) OF THE MAIL GAME IS:********************************************
Chang opened his envelope.....silence
Nothing, it is empty!

Puja opened her envelope...silence, tensed looks
Nothing, it is empty!

So, Ankita carried the deadly envelope.
She opens it, and the name of the contestant that we say goodbye to IS:

PUJA

***********************************************

Nobody really cried for Puja, or at least not on camera. The camera tried real hard to capture Emon's look, but he wasn't crying just smiling and being supportive. I guess he dried all his tears after Deepali's departure. So, we have a short look at Puja's journey. Her best moments on Idol, "Ek pyaar ka nagma"--her best song, in her opinion.

Finally, she is in tears and wishes the contestants all the best and apologizes to her dad for not being able to live up to the challenge.
Awww Puja, it's not your fault. You did your best.

Alisha noted how contestants that sing well get eliminated. Good point, Alisha, though I have the theory behind it:
If you sing well, then your fans get complacent. They feel she/he is somehow going to make it. So, they don't vote as obsessively and the fans of those who are predicted to be in danger, double up their votes---voila, the "good singer" loses out and is evicted.

Puja leaves with her signature song from Mr. India--Hawa Hawaii.

*********************************************************
Next week, Disco Fever round in the Galas!
Until then, this is your host Rima signing off.

something really weird is happening in II3. while desreving canditates like deepali & puja are voted out ppl like ankita and prashant stay on. i'm not saying prashant & ankita are bad but i cant digest that deepali & puja are voted out BEFORE them. that gal, ankita atleast has got no range, versatility whatever. she can only sing ila arun, sunita rao kinda songs & gets away with some hand, legs & hip movements. what's this ??

Ah! it was really terrible to see Puja go after Deepali.Again flawless singing had to bow on knees after performance. Judges even seemed to be so much surprized now i think Sony Channel Sponsers should change the format of indian idol from singing to performance and by the time yesterday Puja had prformed also with superb singing but HINDUSTANI JANTA love to support the one who don,t deserves to. so top 5 are atleast 1. Amit 2.Emon 3. Chang ........ .......... 4.(mediocre singer and excellent performer) and 5.(PRIDE OF THE HILLS) so these two had taken the place of true talent Deepali and Puja in top 5

This is absolute BS. Who are they fooling? When a deserving candidate like Bhavin (remember him?), Parleen, Deepali, etc. are thrown out but useless people like Prashanth, Ankita, are still there, then it is BS. The public voting system is totally flawed. The judges should also be allowed to vote - like a weighted average sytem. Their voting must be given 40% weighting and public voting must be given 60%. I think I have lost interest. Who will get eliminated next week? Hmmmm, let us see - who sings very well - Emon or Amit. Take your pick.

BTW - Indian Idol willl be Prashant Tamang - never to be heard of again like last year's idol - what's his name?

It is quite simple, while Puja is good to listen to when she is one among several performances I seriously doubt anyone is going to be bothered to buy an album containing only that voice, or be bothered to go to a concert with only her standing like a door and singing....

I think I know why they didn't cry.
I suppose they (Emon, Chang) all feel like they could be leaving soon too. By the looks of it next people to go could be Chang, Emon.
The only one we can predict will survive to the top two is Prashant. Between Amit and Ankita I feel Amit has better chances to make it to top two.

But, how I wish to see Emon and Amit in the top two! Imagine if
the contest had been between these two and Puja. That'd have been quite tough! I mean who would you support?

Article from india forum by mr. bond:

'Why prashant gets more votes?

1. The biases of judges:

Yesterday Sonu Nigam began the show with a lecture to Janta. His message was clearly directed at Prashant’s voters. Javed Akhtar did the same couple of times before. People feel insulted with such lectures. They have their own mind and such comments from the judges only ignite their love for Prashant furthermore. Hence they passionately vote for Prashant.

Also the judges pointed out that the song was easy. But the theme was pop song and Prashant’s choice was not at all easy one. There were only three genuine pop songs yesterday- the ones that Prashant sang, Chang sang and Ankita sang. Others had elements of classical melody and thus gave an extra edge to the singers. But as Javed is prejudiced against Prashant from within, he brought that easy song stuff. This negative attitude quickly fuelled a sense of vulnerability/insecurity to Prashant’s voters. And they voted for him crazily.

2. The stereotyping of the Nepalese in India:

Nepalese Indians, Gurkhas and other Nepalese have significantly contributed for the good of India since centuries. They have fought for India in wars. They have highly contributed in saving lives of the Indian public during 1947 hindu/muslim riots. They have loyally served for the Indian bosses, whether it is in the Army or in the business sector or in the household or street jobs. But in return, they have most of the times received stereotypical banters and humiliation. This unites all the people of Nepalese origin in India for a single cause, whatever it is. Prashant is immensely benefiting from this unity and rightly so.

3. The overlooking of Darjeeling:

After the British left India, Darjeeling has been ignored by the central government. Darjeeling’s tea is one of the most rewarding exports of India, and as much a proud symbol. But very little effort has been made for the uplifting of Darjeeling’s living standard. Development has lost its pace too. The movement for autonomy was crushed and while Jharkhand, Uttaranchal were granted a state status, Darjeeling’s effort was blocked. This also fuels to the frustration of Darjeeling people. They want to see their presence being felt in the central level. And Prashant has, probably for the first time, represented the whole India for Darjeeling. This is a matter of great pride for the Darjeeling people and therefore they vote for him as much as they might be doing now.

4. The bad name for Indian police:

Indian police is also always discredited for its efforts. To maintain law and order in such a big country is a huge huge task. But neither the member of the public, nor the Indian intellectuals respect the police as much as they deserve. Their salaries and benefits are far less than what other public servicemen are getting. The police service is mocked and humiliated time and again. Hence when Prashant takes the stage on behalf of the Indian police, it is a matter of great pride for them. Atlast one of their own is in the media for good reasons and they must be so happy. I don’t think any police official is voting for others than Prashant and rightly so.

5. Prashant’s modesty, appeal and soothing voice:

Prashant is so humble, so innocent, and so genuine in terms of character. He is so original. And his smile appeals. He is a good singer too. He has the gifted voice that fits with the melody of hindi music. His alaap is breathtaking. And he has sung the most versatile of songs. With a little bit of theoretical lessons on Indian suur and raag, he can sing all kind of songs brilliantly.

6. The complacency, laziness and greed of other fans:

Sony TV’s audience must be in the figures of tens of millions. I am sure there are more supporters of Amit or Emon or even other contestants than Prashant in India. The population of Nepalese in India and the population of police is definitely hundreds of folds lesser than that of others. But Prashant’s fans are more serious and they have more at stake than other fans’. It also seems to me that other contestant’s fans are greedier than Prashant’s fans. Why would they spend money when there’s nothing important at stake for them?

However, I firmly believe that Prashant will not win the competition eventually. As more contestants are eliminated, their voters will start voting against Prashant. So when Puja get’s eliminated, Emon will get support from her fans. When Chang gets eliminated, either Emon or Amit will get their support. And so does the trend develops. Even if he gets the most number of votes, Sony will intervene and announce a different winner. Sony is not doing so now because if it ousts Prashant today, it will lose a significant sum of money and rating that’s coming from his voters at present. But if the votes are rigged in the final or even during top 3 elimination, Sony won’t lose too much. The reasons why Sony will not let Prashant to be Indian Idol are as follows:

1. The public backlash: The majority of Indians cannot accept the fact that someone of Nepalese origin wins the Indian Idol. Same happens if Chang wins the competition. Sony will definitely avoid such backlash.
2. Prashant’s weaknesses: Prashant is less a performer and more of a singer. Indian Idol has to perform a lot too. Prashant is not a clever chap. He lacks communicating skills. He cannot connect to the stage audience. His Hindi and English language skills are relatively poor. He is shy and doesn’t dance. So he won’t be able to sell the Indian Idol brand.

But Prashant will go on to become a noted playback singer in Indian and Nepali music. Because he can sing very well. He is very sincere and down to earth. He is someone who could be trusted. He won’t be demanding. He is disciplined, dedicated and loyal. And every music directors love to work with such singers. One day sooner than later, Prashant will be singing some Bollywood hits and I am looking forward to that.'

I have no basis for saying this but it feels sometimes that the competition is rigged, just to make it more interesting. Perhaps the bottom 3 are there because of the public's votes and after that somebody in Sony TV decided who to eliminate. Like yesterday I felt Ankita should have gone, but wait - isn't the disco episode next week, where Ankita will be in full form?- so maybe they thought let's keep her for another week. All this could be done to generate drama/controversy/ tears resulting in lots of heated discussions on message boards etc. If all the predictable contestants leave every week, the interest level in the show might go down.

Just a thought....

Week 9: Galas

Mishra performed "Aap Jaisa Koi" for "Disco Night". Javed Akhtar told her that there is something very special about her voice and her personality. Alisha Chinai gave her a standing ovation and said that Mishra could release her version of the song and get an instant hit with it. Udit Narayan also complimented her, calling her performance and singing Earth shattering, and Anu Malek said that they all want a female Indian Idol this year, and Mishra has all the ingredients for it.

I enjoyed your review. It closely mirrored my thoughts. I think the way they stress out the contestants before announcing the voted out candidate is a bit too much! A little drama is acceptable but this one was was just plain cruel!

I did not like Mini Mathur's harsh and demanding tone she asked Chang, Ankita and Puja tough questions and would not even allow Ankita to answer it the way she wanted. Then the whole envelope roulette was just not right!

I felt that they were being treating like criminals who have committed some horrendous offense! What a sad way to treat such talented and courageous youth.

Well..I think II3 is going to go downhill from here with Prshant winning II3 due to his loyal voters.

GREAT review. Loved the "safety zone, membership expires in one week" part. This was really the lowest episode in terms of empathy for the exiting contestant. I found the whole question-answer and open the envelope routine in very bad taste. Don't care who the Indian Idol is at this point, the show just sucks.

I listened to Gala 8 songs again (I realize that my comments are bit obsolete since we have seen the elimination round...but anyways).

Chang was the best -- His voice is really blossoming since the last few episodes (no "deep"ali distraction ;)

Emon was the next -- He is just too good! This kid will go way beyond II3. He is the next Karunya in my opinion

Puja -- She was very good but her voice got a bit loud and shrill towards the latter part -- she also did not get the audience moving

Amit -- Not his best performance! His voice did not sound as good and he went besura in places.

Ankita -- Good song choice...definitely got my feet tapping, nice performance, but average singing (given that she stood in one place most of the time, she should have done much better)

Prashant -- He started of really well and also chose a foot tapping song. But lost his sur towards the later part. I must say that this is the best he has looked...the black suit worked for him.

My fav singing pairs from II3 top 12

Parleen and Ankita -- Rocking Stage performance and great chemistry, highest X-factor couple

Emon and Puja - Mindblowing, soulful, singing, great chemistry, cutest couple of II3

Amit and Deepali - Their voices complement each other -- romantic songs

Abhishek and Emon - Mimicry and comedy routines with music (remember their padosan song)

Abhishek and Ankita - Joint nautanki on stage

Prashant and Charu - Light, simple songs which do not require vocal gymastics

Thank you for the review. I have watched II1 and II2 and based on both I am not surprised that Puja is eliminated. It does not look like that in India right person will ever win the Indian Idol title. People are very biased and they will vote for their own singer regardless of bad singing. Pelple in India say that they have cought up with America but I say not quite. In America, always right singer wins the competition.
I will watch this as long Emon and Amit are in the competition and then I won't watch.

You fools...you people are turning II3 into a rubbish and spoiling indias name..i m saying this as I m not from india....plz plz dont be angry but use ur brains....u already knwo when t judges comment for eg prasanth is not good, all his supporters even if it is 10 they will vote millions for him while u people will cry when next week amit or emon is voted out as they are outstanding and u fools assume other fans will vote...idiots dun blame each other n be selfish...if u wan ur idol to win then vote more if they get good comments...a distinct different between indians from india and others in the world....
u guys i m sorry if u r pissed but try to understand,,,,n plz vote....u pple already spoil deepalis life...not emons or amit or changs.....n u fans of prasanth n ankitha plz understand tht this is too far n show some sense...
