"More Problems for Rockstar Supernova

Posted Oct 11th 2006 5:45PM by TMZ Staff
Rockstar SupernovaMagni and Storm Large, two finalists in the top 5 on the CBS reality show "Rockstar: Supernova," have been essentially fired from the opening act on the upcoming Rockstar Supernova tour.

This is just the latest controversy to besiege Tommy Lee's new band, Rockstar Supernova, since the reality show wrapped production last month.

First a California punk band claimed rights to the name Supernova and sought an injunction to halt the television act from performing or recording under the "Supernova" brand, unless they changed or added words to the name. A San Diego judge ruled in favor of the punk band and forced the CBS backed group to find a new moniker. For once Davey trumped Goliath!

Tommy Lee and the rest of the band, including the show's winner Lukas Rossi, changed the name to Rockstar Supernova.
With a tour scheduled to begin on New Year's Eve in Vegas, the bill's opening act was to include The Panic Channel, host Dave Navarro's latest band, as well as, fellow contestants Toby Rand, Dilana, Magni, Storm Large and the program's House Band.

But now TMZ has learned that due to financial reasons Magni, Storm Large and the House Band have been kicked off the tour. Toby and Dilana are still on board (thank God!), but will now be backed by Toby Rand's Australian group Juke Kartel. Evs!

Though this is sure to be a blow to Storm Large and Magni, who is already a bona fide sensation in his native Iceland, the real question is how fans will react to the news.

And while Magni and Storm will be sorely missed, we're still hoping they add the ever unpredictable and fabulous Zayra Alvarez to the bill.

A call to Rockstar Supernova's record label was not immediately returned. Will

... Hey Y'all!

FOOL ME ONCE... Shame on You

FOOL ME TWICE... Shame on ME!

This isn't the first time... I was doing a little house cleaning this weekend and I stumbled across my RockStar - INXS Season One Finale.

And There ... As Big As Life... Brooke Burke DID announce that The Rock Stars would be going out on tour WITH THE HOUSE BAND!

I guess I had sublimated it so much I totally forgot it was more than a rumor... It was ANNOUNCED... Just like she did this year.

BUT... I imagine that it would cost about $5,000 a week for each member of The House Band IF you wanted them to leave LA and go on the road. Let's see that's...

Sasha, Jim, Rafael, Paul and Nate times 5 GRAND each...

$25,000 / week and I am guessing that you can get Toby's band for $500 a week (for the whole band)

Sasha, Jim, Rafael, Paul and Nate would each require 1 room each at a Ritz Carlton or $ Seasons type hotel....

$350 / night times 5 = $1,750 times 7 nites in a week.

That's another $12,250 per week

Toby's band I am guessing is used to all of them fitting into 2 Motel 6 rooms $39.00 each X 7 = $546 / week

Meals at 4 Star restaurants are about $50 to $75 per person X 5 times 7 = $2,600 / week

% Happy Meals every other day come to appx, $50 or $60 a week for food for Toby's band.

So we've got

$25,000 vs $500 per week for The Musicians

$12,500 vs $550 for lodging and...

$2,600 vs $60 for Food

$41,000 / week for a 16 week tour = $656,000

vs.

$1,100 X 16 = $17,600

Net difference in Mark Burnett's pocket.. Appx. $640,000

He may be a GREEDY *, but with numbers like that... I can "almost" see his point.

I JUST WISH HE WOULD QUIT LYING TO US AT THE END OF EACH SEASON.

Us "Guys" have a name for "women" that do that!

I'm just wondering if a case could be made for people to get a refund on their tickets. If I would have gone, it would not have been to see Supernova, it would have been to see House Band. And if House Band was promised and didn't show, well then I would have wasted all that money. Luckily for me (I suppose) that Dusty and I don't have a lot of disposable money at the moment.

Oh - Oh...

Does that mean this is about to become a "Premium" site?

In that you will have to pay a $$$ premium $$$ to use it?

It is already a "Premiere" sight, in that it is one of "the best" of it's kind :-)

Nah, all features that we have now will always be free of charge.. Eventually we might introduce some special features only available to "premium" members. But a plan like that is a long way from introduced anyway.

LOL.. man, I just laughed out uncontrollably. Harsh but funny. Yeah it sucks to not have Storm and Magni. I just started to wonder about those top 5 finishers and this site never disappoint, always have the news when one needs it. Thanks, that's great to know. Can't wait for the next season. :)

Rock Star: Supernova – Not Quite As Super For Me Any More
By Heather Kobrin
Oct 24, 2006

Ok, I’ll admit it. Reality television is my life. My calendar year is divided into two segments: January-May, better known as American Idol season, and July-September, when Rock Star airs. The rest of the year I make do with Project Runway, The Apprentice (yes, some people actually still watch that), Wife Swap, and pretty much any reality show that Bravo or Fox broadcasts. Of course, I’m still waiting for the Fox execs to wise up and bring back the majesty that was Temptation Island.

Rock Star: Supernova – Not Quite As Super For Me Any More
Rock Star: Supernova – Not Quite As Super For Me Any More

It is, however, the music-based reality shows that earn my greatest affection. I will openly admit to possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of American Idol history. I’ve attended four Idol concerts in the past two years, and screamed like a maniac at each of them. (And yes, I am a fully-grown adult person, in case you were wondering.) Just as close to my heart though, is the Rock Star franchise. The goal of this season’s Rock Star: Supernova was to find a lead singer for a new “supergroup” comprised of former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted, former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, and present Motley Crue drummer/adult video star Tommy Lee. So last July, having worked through the five stages of grief that set in after Idol ended, I settled down in front of the tube, prepared to be properly rocked, and thoroughly entertained. I never thought it would all end with me being absolutely, completely irritated.

The show itself did not disappoint. One of the things I love about Rock Star is that older musicians – even those in their (gasp) late thirties – are eligible as contestants. So instead of watching nervous teens perform for a huge audience for the first time in their lives, viewers can enjoy seasoned professionals who have been in the game a long time. Maybe they haven’t gotten their big break yet, but darn if they don’t know how to bring it live. By the time the contestants, with the help of former Jane’s Addiction/Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro, serving in a suitably cool advisory role, had been whittled down to five, we were looking at five seriously talented individuals: Storm Large, Toby Rand, Dilana Robichaux, Lukas Rossi, and my favorite, Magni Asgeirsson.

Ah, Magni. The bald rocker from Iceland, already a known star in his homeland, lit up the stage with an intensity and a passion the likes of which I’d never seen on my cherished music reality shows. The sheer joy that he exhibited by the simple act of playing music was palpable. Each week, The Iceman’s performances were like master classes in musicianship, culminating with an electrifying performance of Hendrix’s “Fire.” In addition to his considerable talent, from the reality “webisodes” aired on rockstar.msn.com, Magni was clearly a stand-up guy - a family man with a great sense of humor, who knew the meaning of integrity. And, to top it all off, with his 6’ plus frame and penetrating gaze, he wasn’t too bad to look at.

Magni did not win the competition – that honor went to Lukas Rossi, the Canadian rocker whose style, stage presence, and dramatic vocals caught the eye of Tommy Lee early on in the competition. (Lukas also holds the honor of being adored by my 69-year-old mother. She thinks he looks like a young Brando.) The outcome was fine with me – I had never thought Magni would be a great fit with Supernova – my desire had always been to see him perform solo, with his band A Moti Sol, or with the show’s amazing House Band. And it seemed that my wish would be granted, as it was announced that the top five finalists would be taking part in the Supernova tour, along with the House Band and Dave Navarro’s new outfit The Panic Channel.

In a flurry of excitement, I headed to my ticket broker site of choice, and promptly plunked down the necessary amount for front row seats to the show in my city. (I don’t mess around when it comes to concerts I really care about.) Reports circulated that not only was Magni going to be performing a set with the House Band, he’d also be lending a hand on guitar on certain Supernova tracks. Extra on-stage ogling time! Squee! Plus, I was really looking forward to seeing the House Band and my other favorites; Storm, Dilana, Toby, and Lukas perform live.

Then, it happened. As I stared at my computer screen, trying to make sense of what I had just read, the anger welled up within me. TMZ.com was reporting that Storm, Magni, and the House Band had been fired from the tour by Supernova’s management. No reason given. Toby’s band, Juke Kartel would instead open the show, and Dilana would perform a set backed by them.

I was stunned. How could this happen? Performers were promised for a show, fans bought tickets, and then performers were fired. Where’s my refund? I can only assume the reasons behind such a decision were financial. Did the House Band’s rider agreement call for jumbo-sized bags of M&Ms that were deemed price-prohibitive? Are flights from Iceland to the U.S. especially expensive in January? In any case, I was aghast. I began plotting as to how I could go about unloading the pricey tickets. Then, I had a thought. I could still go to the show, enjoy the performers who were left on the bill, but ease my very high level of irritation by sending a message. Get out the fabric pens, the macaroni, and the glitter, because it’s arts & crafts time. I’ll be making myself a shirt that reads “Where’s Magni?” across the chest. And I’ll sit there in my front row, center seats, and hopefully feel just a little bit better about things.

Again, I assure you, I am an adult. Really.

And Flav is Nicole's territory! (Hope you will do The Flavorette as well)
