Stone Temple Pilots' drummer Eric Kretz is being sued by estranged wife Shari for breech of contract. He promised to take care of her forever, and he isn't.
The suit, filed Monday (Aug. 6) in Los Angeles Superior Court, is for breach of oral contract, promissory estoppel, implied in fact contract, constructive trust, declaratory relief, fraud, dissolution of partnership, breach of fiduciary duty, and injunctive relief.
According to the suit, Shari claims she gave up her career as a fine art and commercial artist and, later, her educational pursuits to take care of Eric, who, she says, had promised to "provide for all of Shari's financial support and needs for the rest of her life in the same manner that was established during the parties' relationship consistent with Eric's annual earnings and accumulations."
Shari claims to have aided Eric with everything from writing songs for STP, to helping with the artwork, music videos, and business decisions of the band, as well as serving as Eric's "fashion consultant, confidante, business advisor, and secretary," and having designed Eric's "rock-n-roll look."
I'm kind of undecided on this issue. As a wife who's given up her career for her husband, I do understand what she feels like. He promised to take care of her, so she gave up her career. And for that she does deserve something.
But that should come from divorce proceedings, not from a breech of contract lawsuit. If we're to be held legally responsible for everything we promise those we love, then I'm for a world of trouble. As are most people in this world.
