Hindi Music Review: Dil Diya Hai

Aditya Dutt, who directed last year’s Aashiq Banaya Aapne, just released his new movie titled Dil Diya Hai. The movie reviews have been pretty decent, but the songs are definitely worth listening to.

The cast includes Emraan Hashmi, Ashmit Patel, Mithun Chakraborty and the new leading lady on the block, Geeta Basra. Himesh Reshammiya has directed the music and Sameer has written the lyrics.

Emraan Hashmi is the only actor in Bollywood whose every release has a smashing soundtrack. The joke in Bollywood, which is actually the truth, is that if Emraan’s in the movie, the songs are bound to be awesome.

The verdict here? Emraan takes the cake again! Despite my annoyance with Himesh Reshammiya, the album is actually quite good and will probably end up at the top of the charts.

Dil Diya- Himani Kapoor, Himesh Reshammiya

I actually like this song, even if Reshammiya sings it. I think he finally gets it right this time because he actually shows that he can NOT sound nasal. It also allows him to show some range, which is a far cry from his repeating the same three or four notes he’s used to doing. Himani is fantastic. She totally rocks in both the original and the remix.

Afsana Banake - Himesh Reshammiya, Tulsi Kumar

Reshammiya returns in all his nasal fury for this song. Like all his other offerings, this one sounds like Aashiq Banaya Aapne. In fact, when he opens his mouth to sing, the listener really thinks he’s going to say “aashiq banaaya…” Reshammiya aside, more interesting to me was his female counterpart, Tulsi Kumar. She just started her Bollywood playback singing career. Here’s the thing about this girl- she’s clearly talented and can hold her own in front of giants. But for today’s modern listeners, her voice is a little high-pitched. She sings at a higher scale than even Alka Yagnik sometimes, but never manages to get screechy. So there’s something to be said about her voice control, too. Overall, I think she’s good but I’d be more convinced if she was a little more versatile.

Oh and by the way, this song has a remix. Sure, it sounds just as good as the original. But I didn’t listen to the whole thing. I’m so tired of Reshammiya and his remixes.

Yaaden Teriyan- Himesh Reshammiya

Frankly, this song isn’t spectacular. It doesn’t hold the listener and is too slow-paced to make an impact. It’s sung well enough, but is definitely the weakest on in the album.

Mile Ho Hum To- Himesh Reshammiya, Tulsi Kumar

This is a slow number for which Reshammiya’s voice doesn’t suit at all. Sure, he sings it well, but he’s not spectacular. In fact, I would safely say that Tulsi Kumar steals the thunder here. And as for the overall song, it’s not the best track in the album, but it’s decent.

Jabse Aankh Ladi- Alisha Chinai, Jayesh Gandhi

Alisha Chinai sang the most popular track of 2005- Kajra Re. After that song, the ones that follow always seem a little bland to me. That’s not to say that she’s not as good. I think she’s great in this number, but I don’t think the music director fully tapped into her talent like Shankar, Ehsaan, and Loy did for Kajra Re. Jayesh Gandhi’s voice sounds like a mix between Sonu Nigam and K.K. He’s quite good too.

Chalo Dildar Chalo- Hemachandra, Himani Kapoor, Vinit Singh

The Sa Re Ga Ma Pa finalists come together for this song, which also has a remix version (I’m at the verge of beating down Reshammiya’s door and telling him to stop!). Hemachandra sounds absolutely amazing, as does Vinit! They really get the opportunity to show their talent here, and they eat it up. Himani accompanies them with ease. Mad props to these young singers!

So as I’ve said, this album will probably be popular, especially now that the movie has released. But here’s the thing that bothers me. All the songs not featuring Reshammiya come at the end of the album. I think Chalo Dildar Chalo is the best of the lot, followed by the title track. Afsana Banake would have been my favorite if it didn’t sound like a copy of his previous work. This is the type of album that will be great when you first buy it. A week later, you’ll be looking for something else.

	Deepa said: Reshammiya returns in all his nasal fury for this song. You crack me up! I only liked all the instrumental parts of the album, but I’m sure the songs will work perfectly in the movies. Aashiq Banaya Apne is plane laziness. I wonder how many variations of aashig baanaanya are going to pass the revue. I could be wrong but did they used Dalher Mehndi Nana Nana re in some parts of the Milo ho tum song? Although I probably won’t buy this album I do say yay for giving the new singers a chance!! Speaking of wich Chalo Dildar chalo is the best song of the album the remix is perfect for when you get stuck in the traffic. It’s definitely nice to know that Karunya’s cousin is making his way in the Industry. I thought that his contribution to Alag was amazing: http://www.musicindiaonli....com/l/17/m/singer.9432/ If you fast forward to the last part of "the soul of alag" you can hear how skilled this kid is! For 2007: Himesh take a sabattical. please.

	Uttam & Deeps Himesh is unlikely to take a sabbatical and the fascination of his nasal monotonous voice is here for some time. I cannot bring myself to buy this album. Uttam - I have some better suggestions for traffic jam music ..... Uttam – you crack me up honest. Thanks Deeps for writing the review it is much appreciated.
